Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Corydon

Harrison County Public Library: Griffin Center digital archives

A family-file photograph may already be digitized.

The Family Genealogy File Photos collection contains 708 images. Township justice dockets include a volume covering December 1882 through June 1886, documenting debts and other local cases.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the digital collections by family or township. Ask genealogy@hcpl.lib.in.us for associated physical files or questions about reuse.

A question you can ask

Is there a physical family file or later docket entry associated with this digital item?

Keep in mind

Identifications reflect available knowledge and may be incomplete. Allegations in a court docket are not the same as a final finding.

STOP 02 / Corydon / Harrison County

Griffin Center: African American history resources

Search community evidence that may sit outside surname indexes.

The Center highlights African American family and history files, obituary and cemetery material, school resources, and Earl Saulman’s Blacks in Harrison County, Indiana, A History.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the Griffin Center through Harrison County Public Library and ask for the relevant file or title before a research visit.

A question you can ask

Which school, cemetery, or family file covers this person’s community and period?

Keep in mind

Compiled histories and files need source checking. An absent name may reflect collection or indexing gaps rather than absence from the community.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Harrison County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Selected holdings include marriage affidavits and certificates, 1809–1865; marriage consents and corrections, 1859–1882; death returns, 1882–1899; and will abstracts, 1809–1900.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Could a consent, correction, or affidavit name someone omitted from the marriage index?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

HARRISON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Harrison County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

School Commissioner’s Record Book, 1833–1853

The Griffin Center digitized a school-land book with trustee elections, voters, land purchasers, mortgages and township finances.

How to begin: Browse the library’s collection and identify townships by township and range numbers. Save the page with any name match.

What remains uncertain: The child enumerations include township counts; the description does not promise individual pupil names. Blank pages were omitted.
