Start with one connection.
Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.
STOP 01 / BedfordEdward L. Hutton Research Library
Fragile family records can survive as research copies.
The Lawrence County Museum of History library describes family Bible copies, school yearbooks and photographs, maps, and Bedford and Mitchell newspapers on microfilm reaching back to the 1830s.
Research details & a question to ask
How to begin
Contact the library with a surname, town and date range. Ask which newspaper issues or family folders can be consulted and whether remote copying is possible.
A question you can ask
Is there a Bible copy or family folder, and can its donor or original owner be identified?
Keep in mind
The earliest newspaper date does not mean an uninterrupted run. Bible copies need provenance and the date of the original entry.
STOP 02 / Lawrence CountyLawrence County Health Department: genealogy requests
Request the record behind a birth or death index.
The department publishes a genealogy request route for records at least 75 years old and directs marriage inquiries to the clerk.
Research details & a question to ask
How to begin
Review the current vital-record instructions and contact staff about the required information, eligibility and fees before ordering.
A question you can ask
Can you search this named event and explain what the genealogy response contains?
Keep in mind
A research information sheet and a certified certificate are different products. A county request only helps when that office holds the event.
STOP 03 / Indianapolis / statewideIndiana State Library: Lawrence County holdings
Turn a county index into a precise request for the underlying record.
Selected holdings include naturalization records for 1852–1951 and abstracts of wills for 1819–1850.
Research details & a question to ask
How to begin
Open the county guide, copy the title and call number, then check the catalog or ask the library about format and access before visiting.
A question you can ask
Can the will abstract be traced to its original book and page?
Keep in mind
These are selected library holdings, often indexes or transcripts. A listed date range does not guarantee every event survives or that original images are online.
Leave a trail another researcher can follow.
Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.
