Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Petersburg / Pike County

Pike County Indiana Genealogy Society

Ask local volunteers where historical records have been preserved.

The society describes the Edith Barrett Memorial History Center and cooperation with the historical society and Petersburg library to preserve local records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the society contact route to confirm its current research arrangements and ask about a specific family, township or publication.

A question you can ask

Where can I consult records for this township and period today?

Keep in mind

The website includes older notices. Current opening hours and any named archival holdings require confirmation before travel.

STOP 02 / Indianapolis / Highbanks

Indiana Historical Society: Robert Logan store account books

Follow purchases, payments and neighbors in a rural store ledger.

An IHS article indexes customers for January–March 1850 and identifies microfilm of the Highbanks store books: 1850–1851 on F 0010 and 1853–1854 on reel 356.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the article to locate a name, then ask the library for the complete account page and surrounding entries on the relevant film.

A question you can ask

Can I see the dated transaction and any account carried forward?

Keep in mind

The article’s name list covers only three months. Paying another person’s account does not by itself prove kinship.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / statewide

Indiana State Library: Pike County holdings

Turn a county index into a precise request for the underlying record.

Selected holdings include Commissioners Reports, Book A, for 1817–1825 and an index to commissioners’ records for 1818–1839.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the county guide, copy the title and call number, then check the catalog or ask the library about format and access before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which original commissioners’ entry follows this name or township reference?

Keep in mind

These are selected library holdings, often indexes or transcripts. A listed date range does not guarantee every event survives or that original images are online.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

PIKE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Pike County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

preliminary microfilm inventory entry

Probates (microfilm)

Listed years: 1831–1851.

Source, access and coverage limits

This preliminary inventory warns that it may not be up to date. Give the State Library the title, volumes and years when asking about microfilm access or digital copies. Check the linked entry for gaps and confirm current availability before visiting. The inventory adds indexes, 1851?-1890. That uncertain-start interval is not plotted.

Keep in mind: Selected Indiana State Library holdings. Microfilm overview bounds can include indexes and multiple volumes; consult item-level entries for gaps. These are not countywide survival dates or an assurance of online images. Preliminary inventory entries may not reflect current holdings; confirm with the library.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Water-powered mills research files

Indiana Historical Society lists Pike County 1840 census material, a 1936 mill survey and correspondence dated 1935–1937.

How to begin: Request M0837, box 4, folder 12, and name the creek, mill or operator of interest.

What remains uncertain: Later survey answers are research leads, not necessarily contemporary testimony about nineteenth-century ownership. Confirm claims against deeds and other records.
