Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Osgood

Osgood Public Library Indiana Room

Follow the local researcher’s notes as well as the published family history.

The Indiana Room includes Violet Toph material, compiled family histories and local genealogists’ notes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the Evergreen catalog and contact the library about consulting noncirculating genealogy materials.

A question you can ask

Are there Toph notes or an uncataloged family file for this surname?

Keep in mind

Handwritten research notes are leads to evaluate, not automatically original evidence.

STOP 02 / Batesville

Batesville Memorial Public Library Genealogy Center

Try probate and immigration records alongside newspapers.

Listed film includes Ripley birth and death records, naturalizations, declarations of intent, Probate Order Books A and B, wills and contagious-disease records. Batesville newspapers span 1887-2020.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the center about the exact reel, staff availability and printing before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which probate or naturalization reel covers this person’s year?

Keep in mind

Date spans do not guarantee every issue or record survives.

STOP 03 / Versailles / online indexes

Ripley County Historical Society library

Use the Toph Papers and coroner indexes to pursue a specific question.

The society describes more than 6,000 pages of Toph Papers, a surname index, will indexes for 1821-1896 and coroner inquests for 1908-1912.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with its genealogical-data page; follow the society’s research policy for copies.

A question you can ask

Can you supply the Toph page or inquest identified by this index?

Keep in mind

Indexes and transcriptions need comparison with the document they describe.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

RIPLEY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Ripley County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Bear Creek Baptist Church building-fund subscribers

A published transcription lists people contributing money, labor or materials toward the Friendship meetinghouse in the 1860s. The source also identifies church minutes and Sunday School records, 1818–1882.

How to begin: Search the PDF, then ask IHS about microfilm F 0001 and the Bear Creek Baptist Church portion of the reel.

What remains uncertain: Multiple collections share the reel, and the article reports difficult-to-read dark edges. Preserve bracketed readings. A contribution does not automatically establish membership or kinship.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.
