Spencer County:
Family files, Sanborn maps and early estate research.

Pair a Rockport-area location with newspapers and probate sources instead of relying on a surname alone.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Rockport

Spencer County Public Library genealogy department

Connect a family to a church, school or street.

The department lists church histories and records, family files, local yearbooks, early court indexes and Sanborn maps for Rockport, Chrisney and Dale.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact genealogy staff with the town, date range and record type before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which church file or map edition covers this family’s neighborhood?

Keep in mind

An index is a starting point; map coverage varies by place and year.

STOP 02 / Online / county libraries

Spencer County newspaper research through the library

Search the newspaper archive, then check the obituary index.

The library provides a Spencer County Newspapers link and describes an obituary index covering 1844-2011 as an ongoing project.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through the library database page and ask genealogy staff about the title and dates you need.

A question you can ask

If no obituary is indexed, which surviving issues can I browse?

Keep in mind

The index is not complete, and a newspaper date span does not establish continuous issue coverage.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / catalog research

Indiana State Library: Spencer County records

Find a named record volume before planning a courthouse visit.

The county guide identifies Early Wills and Estate Settlements, 1818-1839, and a publication covering Probate Books A-D and Will Record Books A-D.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title and call number, then ask library staff about consultation or copies.

A question you can ask

Can the index identify both the will and the associated estate settlement?

Keep in mind

The guide lists publications and indexes; a title is not a promise that every original record is digitized.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

SPENCER COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Spencer County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Spencer County history manuscripts, 1822–1861

Lilly Library holds legal papers including divorce petitions, estate inventories, settlements, promissory notes and indictments. Daniel Grass estate papers are among the named examples.

How to begin: Request LMC1984 through the catalog and arrange an appointment at least one week ahead.

What remains uncertain: The catalog lists no online items. This is a selected manuscript collection, not a complete county court series; allegations in indictments are not proof of guilt.
