Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Newport

Vermillion County Public Library genealogy

Request a specific film or family file before traveling.

The library lists local yearbooks, family books, cemetery material, Dana and Newport newspapers, and film covering marriage, probate, wills, births, civil orders and guardianships.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use its genealogy request form or contact staff; materials are noncirculating and research fees may apply.

A question you can ask

Which guardianship or probate film includes the needed years?

Keep in mind

Allow time for a response. Film date coverage must be confirmed for the requested series.

STOP 02 / Veedersburg / regional

Fountain County Genealogical Society Family Research Library

A neighboring repository for families who moved across county lines.

The society explicitly includes Vermillion County in its regional research coverage.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send a focused query or arrange a library visit.

A question you can ask

Is there regional family material linking this person to Vermillion County?

Keep in mind

County coverage does not confirm a particular family file.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / catalog research

Indiana State Library: Vermillion County records

Find a named record volume before planning a courthouse visit.

Holdings include Marriage Records, 1824-1861, and supplemental marriage-application publications covering portions of 1882-1920.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title and call number, then ask library staff about consultation or copies.

A question you can ask

Which application volume covers this marriage, beyond the basic index?

Keep in mind

The guide lists publications and indexes; a title is not a promise that every original record is digitized.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

VERMILLION COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Vermillion County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Elizabeth Simpson correspondence from Eugene

The Elizabeth Simpson Collection includes letters sent from Eugene, Vermillion County, and Crawfordsville to Kentucky family and friends during 1836–1848. Quilting patterns are also described.

How to begin: Consult the IHS finding aid for SC 1349 and OM 0509, then ask staff to identify the Eugene correspondence relevant to your names or dates.

What remains uncertain: The collection’s overall date span is broader than the identified Indiana letters. A sender’s location does not establish every named person’s residence.
