Hart County:
Follow surname files into school and community history.

Use the Mary Willia Branstetter Genealogical Library and Hart County’s one-room schoolhouse project to explore family and neighborhood connections.

Sources checked October 26, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions and collection catalogs; no staff confirmation or onsite inspection. Confirm access before visiting.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

Check the county for your research year.

A place may have belonged to a parent county before this county existed.

HART COUNTY / RECORDS BEFORE SEARCH RESULTS

Which records cover your years?

Compare your research years with these KDLA inventory entries. Bars represent listed holdings, not verified completeness or online availability. Unmarked years mean not listed here, not proof that records were destroyed.

Check the volume before ordering. Inventory endpoints do not mark the beginning or end of all county recordkeeping. Ask about indexes, missing volumes, access conditions and other custodians.

Marriage records

Listed dates: 1852–1854, 1856–1859, 1861, 1874–1877, 1892–1893, 1907, 1928–1997.

Ask for the register entry and any associated license, bond or return.

Deed books

Listed dates: 1928–1998.

Locate the grantor and grantee indexes first; preserve the book and page reference.

Will books

Listed dates: 1928–1997.

Ask separately about estate settlements, administrations, guardianships and loose papers.

County order books

Listed dates: 1819–1823, 1928–1977.

Request the relevant volume and index, then follow references to related proceedings.

Early birth records

Listed dates: 1852–1859, 1861, 1872–1876, 1892–1893, 1903–1904, 1907.

These interrupted runs require year-specific checking. Do not assume complete registration.

Death records

Listed dates: 1852–1859, 1861, 1874–1878, 1892–1893, 1903–1904, 1907, 1911–1967.

The 1911–1967 run includes KDLA statewide certificate holdings. Confirm the correct custodian for later records.

Tax assessment books

Microfilm (blue): 1819–1831, 1833, 1835, 1837, 1840–1875, 1879–1885, 1887–1890, 1892, 1897–1904, 1911, 1915, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1930–1941, 1943–1944, 1946–1947, 1949–1955, 1958–1995.

Ask KDLA for the named county, taxpayer and exact year, and whether the item is microfilm or an original. An absent name alone does not prove death or migration.

Access: start with KDLA’s record-request forms . Select the appropriate series and provide county, name, date and any book/page citation. Confirm current fees and restrictions. These links lead to request instructions, not a promise of free online images.

STOP 01 / Munfordville

Mary Willia Branstetter Genealogical Library

Check a surname-file inventory before visiting.

The library lists more than 1,200 surname files, plus cemetery and census records, school material, Civil War resources, photographs and history files. Its online surname list helps identify possible folders.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The genealogy library is at 105 Main Street, beside the museum. Posted hours are Wednesday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., or appointment. In-person research is free; staff research is listed at $25/hour after a free preliminary search. Confirm costs and arrangements at 270-524-0101.

A question you can ask

What is in this surname folder, and can you identify its contributors and original sources?

Keep in mind

File size and content vary by name. Museum opening hours do not automatically mean the genealogy library is open.

STOP 02 / Countywide / Historical Society

Hart County One-Room Schoolhouse Committee

A remembered school name can locate a family’s neighborhood.

The project maintains a growing list of schools and gathers locations, records and personal recollections. Listed places include Aetna Furnace, Cub Run, Leitchfield Crossing and Woodsonville.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the school list and contact the museum at 270-524-0101 to ask what has actually been collected for the school and years you need.

A question you can ask

Do you hold a dated class photograph, teacher list or recollection for this school, and who supplied it?

Keep in mind

This is an ongoing documentation project, not a complete student register. A school’s inclusion does not establish a person’s attendance. Some sites are private property.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.
