Kenton County:
Search faces, places and regional memory

Photographic and local-history resources let you follow a street, employer or neighborhood when a surname search stalls.

FOLLOW THE RECORD

Choose the school record that fits the question

  1. STEP 01

    Name the child and place

Begin with approximate age, date and school district or town.

  2. STEP 02

    Choose a series

County enumeration returns or school census cards; for Ludlow, student records and board minutes 1872–1912.

  3. STEP 03

    Request the specific reel

Give Kenton Library the series title and film location; verify arrangement, coverage and access before visiting.

Evidence check: Enumeration is not the same as attendance. Published date spans do not guarantee every district, year or pupil.

Research-route diagram, not an original record or a completed person search. Based on the linked repository instructions. Checked October 31, 2026.

County school records · Ludlow school records

Sources checked October 31, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions and collection catalogs; no staff confirmation or onsite inspection. Confirm access before visiting.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

Check the county for your research year.

A place may have belonged to a parent county before this county existed.

STOP 01 / Covington / online

Kenton County Public Library Faces and Places

A place search may reveal an image without a family name.

The library’s historical photograph database documents regional people, places and events, including material from Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the library’s Faces and Places introduction, then search a business, street or school as well as the surname.

A question you can ask

Does the image record include a date, donor or identifying caption?

Keep in mind

A caption is evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee of identification. Check rights before republishing.

STOP 02 / Covington / online

Kenton County Public Library History and Genealogy

Find local resources grouped outside general search engines.

The department provides print, microfilm and online materials and the geNKY Northern Kentucky genealogy database.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the department’s collection links, then request the item or index entry by title and reference.

A question you can ask

Which local index or collection covers this address and period?

Keep in mind

Database coverage is selective and differs by record type.

STOP 03 / Kenton County Public Library, Local History and Genealogy Department

School census cards and enumeration returns

Follow the record creator and the surviving collection.

The county-record microfilm inventory identifies Kenton County School Census Cards, 1915–1977, and Enumeration Return of School Aged Children, 1912–1914 and 1921–1922. Both carry film location 320.83 K37be. These named series offer a school-age research route more precise than a general genealogy-database link.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the Covington department at history@kentonlibrary.org with the child's name, approximate age, location and target year. Ask how the cards or returns are arranged, whether an index exists and whether the specific district is represented. Confirm consultation and reproduction arrangements, then preserve the series, year, district and page or card reference.

A question you can ask

Which volume or folder covers this person, place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Inventory date spans do not establish complete annual or district coverage. Ask about restrictions for recent material. A school-age enumeration is not necessarily an attendance record, and a missing name should not be treated as proof that the family was absent.

STOP 04 / Kenton County Public Library, municipal microfilm holdings

Ludlow school and civic records: follow a local institution

Follow the record creator and the surviving collection.

The city-record inventory lists Ludlow Public School Student Records and Board Minutes, 1872–1912, at 320.85 L945is. It also lists Ludlow Volunteer Fire Department Minutes and Rosters, 1884–1946, at 320.85 L945vf. These collections connect research to a specific school system or local civic organization rather than to photographs alone.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Choose the series that matches the question and contact the Covington Local History and Genealogy Department with its title and film location. For school work, ask which volumes contain student entries versus board business. For a suspected firefighter, request information about the roster arrangement and target date before browsing minutes.

A question you can ask

Which volume or folder covers this person, place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The combined school title does not promise that every student or year has survived. The fire-department date span is also a catalog range, not proof of continuous rosters. Neither organizational affiliation nor a repeated surname establishes a family relationship.

STOP 05 / Kenton County Public Library, municipal microfilm holdings

Covington equalization and council records: investigate municipal decisions

Follow the record creator and the surviving collection.

The library lists Covington Board of Equalization records, 1899–1940, at 320.85 C873be; council minutes, 1837–1914, at 320.85 C873cm; and ordinances, 1887–1928, at 320.85 C873o. These distinct series support focused questions about municipal administration and the setting around a family's address or business.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Bring an address, person or event date to the Covington Local History and Genealogy Department. Ask staff which series fits the question and whether its volumes have indexes. Request the title and film location rather than asking for all city records. Cite the actual volume, meeting date and page if a relevant entry is found.

A question you can ask

Which volume or folder covers this person, place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The inventory does not describe the equalization records' fields or guarantee that residents are indexed by name. Avoid presenting these as a complete property-ownership register. Council discussion and ordinances document government activity and still need correlation with deeds, directories or other individual evidence.

KENTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Kenton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

KDLA inventory entry

Marriage records (Covington inventory row)

Listed years: 1840–1978.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use KDLA’s record-request instructions and identify the county, record series, exact years and any book or page reference. Ask about indexes and the current custodian before ordering.

Keep in mind: These are selected inventory dates, not proof of complete or uninterrupted coverage or online images. Confirm the specific volume and any earlier jurisdiction; a range endpoint is not necessarily the first or last year of recordkeeping. Probate papers may be filed separately from will books. Other series distinguish Covington and Independence courthouse holdings. Confirm scope before requesting.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.
