LaRue County:
Listen to local memory, then check the printed record.

Explore LaRue County oral histories and newspaper obituaries, with a separate route to historical society publications held in Frankfort.

Sources checked October 26, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions and collection catalogs; no staff confirmation or onsite inspection. Confirm access before visiting.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

Check the county for your research year.

A place may have belonged to a parent county before this county existed.

LARUE COUNTY / RECORDS BEFORE SEARCH RESULTS

Which records cover your years?

Compare your research years with these KDLA inventory entries. Bars represent listed holdings, not verified completeness or online availability. Unmarked years mean not listed here, not proof that records were destroyed.

Check the volume before ordering. Inventory endpoints do not mark the beginning or end of all county recordkeeping. Ask about indexes, missing volumes, access conditions and other custodians.

Marriage records

Listed dates: 1843–2013.

Ask for the register entry and any associated license, bond or return.

Deed books

Listed dates: 1843–2014.

Locate the grantor and grantee indexes first; preserve the book and page reference.

Will books

Listed dates: 1843–2012.

Ask separately about estate settlements, administrations, guardianships and loose papers.

County order books

Listed dates: 1843–1977.

Request the relevant volume and index, then follow references to related proceedings.

Early birth records

Listed dates: 1852–1859, 1861, 1874–1878, 1896–1899, 1903.

These interrupted runs require year-specific checking. Do not assume complete registration.

Death records

Listed dates: 1852–1861, 1874–1879, 1896–1899, 1903, 1911–1967.

The 1911–1967 run includes KDLA statewide certificate holdings. Confirm the correct custodian for later records.

Tax assessment books

Microfilm (blue): 1843–1875, 1879–1884, 1886–1892.

Ask KDLA for the named county, taxpayer and exact year, and whether the item is microfilm or an original. An absent name alone does not prove death or migration.

Access: start with KDLA’s record-request forms . Select the appropriate series and provide county, name, date and any book/page citation. Confirm current fees and restrictions. These links lead to request instructions, not a promise of free online images.

LaRue County Public Library: oral histories and Herald News obituaries

Two local collections share one library.

The Oral History Project links interviews with residents including Wilma McDowell, Phyllis Hazle, Billy Curle, and Carl Howell Jr. The library also holds annual bound editions of the LaRue County Herald News. Its website offers selected obituary files for listed years between 1950 and 1963; additional years are in the onsite reference section.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start on Books & More. Open an interview or a year-and-surname obituary file. For other years, contact the library at 270-358-3851 before visiting 215 Lincoln Drive.

A question you can ask

Can you check the bound newspaper for this date and supply the full obituary with page and issue details?

Keep in mind

Online obituary years are selective, not a continuous run. Memories are evidence of what a narrator recalled; check dates and relationships against contemporary records.

Kentucky Historical Society: LaRue County Records periodical

A society journal may preserve a transcription a name search misses.

KHS lists LaRue County Records among its county historical and genealogical publications. This is a route to local research articles and transcriptions rather than a promise that every issue is digitized.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the KHS library catalog and ask staff to confirm available volumes, indexes, and copying options for the title before visiting or ordering.

A question you can ask

Which issues of LaRue County Records do you hold, and is there a surname or subject index?

Keep in mind

The holdings list does not specify issue coverage or prove that a particular ancestor appears. Trace any transcription to its cited original when available.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.
