STOP 01 / UIS IRAD

School reports: identify the district and the reporting official

Teachers’ and trustees’ annual reports offer separate routes into local school administration. The series titles establish reporting records, not a promised list of every pupil.

School Teachers' Annual Reports
1917–1945 · Accession 4/0037/01

School Trustees' Annual Reports
1910–1940 · Accession 4/0036/01

A focused question to ask

Which districts and years survive, and do the reports identify teachers, trustees or school locations? Is there a district index?

Evidence limit: Catalog spans do not guarantee every annual report survives. Ask about the fields before assuming student names or attendance appear.

STOP 02 / UIS IRAD

Taylorville: follow a local improvement into city decisions

The local improvements board minutes provide a focused route for a street or neighborhood question. City council minutes can supply a separate municipal decision trail.

Taylorville: Local Improvements Board Minutes
1911–1930 · Accession 4/0254/03

Taylorville: City Council Minutes
1875–1983 · Accession 4/0254/01

A focused question to ask

Can staff identify minutes for a named street, improvement or approximate meeting date? Are there subject indexes or related ordinances?

Evidence limit: A project near an ancestor’s address does not establish ownership, residence or participation. Verify any personal connection with other records.

STOP 03 / UIS IRAD

Pana: council decisions and later city finances

Pana’s council minutes and annual audit reports cover different periods. Select the series that matches a local governance or financial question rather than treating them as continuous coverage.

Pana: City Council Minutes
1857–1948 · Accession 4/0256/01

Pana: City Annual Audit Reports
1952–1973 · Accession 4/0059/01

A focused question to ask

Which volume covers the meeting or fiscal year, and are officials, departments or expenditures indexed?

Evidence limit: These series do not overlap in the cataloged dates and do not enumerate all residents. Individual payments or employee lists have not been verified.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL OR ORDER

Request records from the IRAD regional depository

IRAD regional depository · 217-206-6520

IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: University of Illinois Springfield. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.

Call first. UIS official pages differ about appointment availability and whether email research requests are accepted. Mail is a listed request route; confirm current staffing, the mailing address, appointments and copying arrangements directly before visiting.

Access information needs reconfirmation: compare the UIS library research guide with the UIS staffing and hours notice . We have not received staff confirmation.

Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy .

Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.

Collection dates at a glance

The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.

Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
