Understand the IRAD route.

The Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) system is administered by the Illinois State Archives, part of the Illinois Secretary of State. Its regional depositories are located on seven university campuses and preserve transferred local-government records. A collection created in your county may now be held in another city. These guides identify selected holdings, not all records that survive locally.

  1. Identify the historical county, township, municipality or school district.
  2. Search the official holdings database by county and record title.
  3. Save the exact series title, date range, accession number and depository.
  4. Ask about the specific volume, index, access conditions and copy cost.

Township government, a survey township, a municipality and a school district are different geographic units. Do not substitute one for another.

What a date range can and cannot tell you

The dates in the county guides describe cataloged series. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, every school district, online images or an entry for a particular person. An absent catalog listing does not prove a record was destroyed. Ask the custodian about gaps, untransferred material and later records.

Use the Research Planner to match your years against these selected IRAD series. Community collections without verified date spans are not included in automatic matching.
