Fayette County:
Vandalia road and bridge records, Farina decisions and museum collections

Start with a township road or village decision, then use the county museum to investigate local objects and community context. Each stop has a different custodian and purpose.

STOP 01 / UIS IRAD

Vandalia Township: road decisions and later bridge construction

The township’s highway-commissioners series and later bridge-construction record offer two distinct periods for place-based research.

Highway Commissioners' Record (Vandalia Twp)
1863–1941 · Accession 4/0367/03

Bridge Construction Record (Vandalia Twp)
1961–2007 · Accession 4/0367/05

A focused question to ask

Can staff identify the volume for a named road, bridge or location, and are plans or an index included?

Evidence limit: The two series cover different dates and do not form continuous coverage. A catalog title does not confirm named workers or landowners.

STOP 02 / UIS IRAD

Farina: village trustees and local justice

Trustees’ minutes and police-magistrate dockets provide separate municipal and local-court routes into Farina’s past.

Village Trustees' Minutes (Farina)
1867–1977 · Accession 4/0340/01

Police Magistrate Dockets (Farina)
1895–1959 · Accession 4/0340/02

A focused question to ask

Which volume and index cover the person, ordinance, dispute or meeting date? Are related case papers held separately?

Evidence limit: A docket is not necessarily the complete case file. Minutes do not list every resident.

STOP 03 / COMMUNITY COLLECTION

Fayette County Museum: ask about the story behind an object

The city’s museum page describes donated local artifacts arranged in themed rooms, including a bank teller’s cage and a church pipe organ. These objects can prompt questions about businesses, congregations and the people who used them.

A focused question to ask

Does the museum retain provenance, donor information or supporting photographs for an object connected to a family or organization?

Evidence limit: The verified page describes exhibits, not an open archival finding aid or a promised genealogy research service. Ask before assuming donor or collection files can be consulted.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL OR ORDER

Request records from the IRAD regional depository

IRAD regional depository · 217-206-6520

IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: University of Illinois Springfield. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.

Call first. UIS official pages differ about appointment availability and whether email research requests are accepted. Mail is a listed request route; confirm current staffing, the mailing address, appointments and copying arrangements directly before visiting.

Access information needs reconfirmation: compare the UIS library research guide with the UIS staffing and hours notice . We have not received staff confirmation.

Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy .

Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.

Collection dates at a glance

The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.

Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
