STOP 01 / SIU IRAD

Kaskaskia: school registers with district context

Kaskaskia has separately identified school holdings. Use the district record to frame a focused request for the daily registers.

Kaskaskia: School Teachers' Daily Registers
1903–1987 · Accession 6/0303/03

Kaskaskia: School District Record
1940–1964 · Accession 6/0303/02

A focused question to ask

Which schools and register volumes cover my target year, and are there restrictions on the particular pupil record?

Evidence limit: The long register span is not a promise of continuous coverage or unrestricted access. A district record is not automatically a student roster.

STOP 02 / SIU IRAD

Teachers: examinations and professional gatherings

Certificate examinations and institute records provide two routes for studying an educator’s professional history beyond a household census.

School Teachers' Certificate Examination Record
1890–1912 · Accession 6/0268/14

School Teachers' Institute Record
1876–1971 · Accession 6/0268/02

A focused question to ask

Are candidates or attendees indexed by name, and what information is recorded for the year I need?

Evidence limit: A candidate’s examination entry does not by itself establish certification or employment. The institute title does not confirm individual attendance lists.

STOP 03 / SIU IRAD

Red Bud: compare the meeting decision with the ordinance

Council minutes and ordinance records offer complementary ways to investigate a municipal rule, street or business-related question.

Red Bud: City Council Minutes
1888–1923 · Accession 6/0454/01

Red Bud: City Ordinance Record
1875–1927 · Accession 6/0454/02

A focused question to ask

Are subjects or ordinance numbers indexed, and can an ordinance be traced to the meeting where it was adopted?

Evidence limit: An ordinance describes a rule; it does not establish that a named person held a license or complied with it. Coverage outside these catalog spans requires a separate inquiry.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL OR ORDER

Request records from the IRAD regional depository

IRAD regional depository · 618-453-3040

IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.

Call before visiting the IRAD facility in the Library Storage Building, 1835 University Press Drive, Carbondale. It is separate from the main library. Follow the statewide telephone/mail request policy; reduced summer hours and university closures can affect access.

Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy .

Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.

Collection dates at a glance

The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.

Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
