Sources checked October 29, 2026. Holdings checked against official catalogs and repository descriptions. Staff-confirmed details are identified below; other holdings are based on published sources. No name-level search; dates do not guarantee complete coverage or online images.

STOP 01 / COMMUNITY COLLECTION

Little White School Museum: search the neighborhood news

The museum provides downloadable transcriptions of Oswego Township and Kendall County newspaper coverage. These can expose small community notices that broad name searches miss. Download groups span 1849–1869 through 1970–1985. Named source newspapers include Kendall County Courier, Kendall County Free Press, Kendall County Record and Oswego Ledger.

A focused question to ask

Which newspaper issue and page supports this transcription, and can I obtain an image for comparison?

Evidence limit: These are transcriptions, not original newspaper images. The PDF groupings do not establish complete coverage of every issue.

STOP 02 / COMMUNITY COLLECTION

Oswego Public Library: school yearbooks and newspaper microfilm

The Oswego Campus combines school yearbooks with newspaper microfilm, allowing a school clue to be checked against contemporary local reporting. Yearbooks include Oswego High School, Oswego East High School and selected junior-high and elementary schools, with the earliest dating to 1938. Newspaper microfilm includes Kendall County Record 1864–2015 and Oswego Ledger 1951–2014.

A focused question to ask

Do you have the school and year I need, and can I reserve the microfilm reader or request a limited lookup?

Evidence limit: The earliest yearbook date is not a continuous run for every school. Check the specific volume before traveling.

STOP 03 / COMMUNITY COLLECTION

Little White School Museum: ask about local photographs and documents

The Oswegoland archive preserves photographs, documents and artifacts associated with the community. A named building, school, business or event can be a more useful request than a surname alone. The museum describes a community collection of photographs, documents and three-dimensional artifacts; no item-level finding aid or complete date span was verified.

A focused question to ask

Are there photographs or documents for this place and approximate year, and what description or identifier should I cite?

Evidence limit: The museum’s official access pages conflict. The research page gives research hours; the museum-hours page says Research & Archives are currently closed. Do not assume gallery hours mean archive access.

STOP 04 / NIU IRAD

County board minutes: follow the public decision

When a newspaper names a public project or county action, the Board of Supervisors’ minutes offer a separate administrative trail.

Board of Supervisors' Minutes
1841–1992 · Accession 1/0330/01

A focused question to ask

Which volume and index cover the named project or meeting date, and can the relevant entry be copied?

Evidence limit: A long catalog span is not proof of uninterrupted coverage or an entry for every resident.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL OR ORDER

Request records from the IRAD regional depository

IRAD regional depository · 815-753-1807

IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.

Call to ask a question or schedule an appointment. The IRAD office is in Founders Memorial Library, Room 265, on the second floor. For a remote request, follow the statewide telephone/mail policy and confirm the current mailing address with staff.

Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy .

Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.

Collection dates at a glance

The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.

Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
