Perry County:
DuQuoin street work, excavation permits and school registers

Look beyond countywide name searches to DuQuoin’s street administration and permit records, then use school registers with a known district. Municipal series cover the named city, not every Perry County community.

STOP 01 / SIU IRAD

School records: identify the school before requesting a pupil search

High-school permanent student records and teachers’ daily registers are separately cataloged. The school district record can help frame a request about district coverage.

School Student Permanent Record, High School
1928–1951 · Accession 6/0349/01

School Teachers' Daily Registers
1902–1960 · Accession 6/0351/01

School District Record
1861–1951 · Accession 6/0197/01

A focused question to ask

Which schools and districts occur in these accessions, and what access or copying conditions apply to the year and student I am researching?

Evidence limit: The county heading does not mean every school survives. Confirm district, year gaps and any student-record restrictions; absence from one register is not proof of nonattendance.

STOP 02 / SIU IRAD

DuQuoin excavation permits: investigate a place or project

An excavation permit record and local improvements board minutes offer two distinct municipal routes for researching changes to the built environment.

DuQuoin: Excavation Permit Record
1923–1950 · Accession 6/0388/14

DuQuoin: Local Improvements Board Minutes
1907–1914 · Accession 6/0388/10

A focused question to ask

How are permits indexed or arranged, and can I search by street or property location? What project identifiers should I include in a request for the board minutes?

Evidence limit: The series cover different periods. Their titles do not establish that a particular property, applicant or improvement appears, or that permits document completed work.

STOP 03 / SIU IRAD

DuQuoin street work: connect a work log to municipal accounts

The street commissioner’s work log and streets and alleys account books preserve two kinds of street administration. Start with a date and location rather than assuming a surname index exists.

DuQuoin: Street Commissioner's Work Log
1887–1891 · Accession 6/0388/12

DuQuoin: Streets and Alleys Account Books
1894–1900 · Accession 6/0388/13

A focused question to ask

Do these volumes name workers or payees, identify street locations, or provide an index? Which volume fits my year?

Evidence limit: The work log and account books have different date ranges. Verify actual entries before making claims about an ancestor’s employment or payment.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL OR ORDER

Request records from the IRAD regional depository

IRAD regional depository · 618-453-3040

IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.

Call before visiting the IRAD facility in the Library Storage Building, 1835 University Press Drive, Carbondale. It is separate from the main library. Follow the statewide telephone/mail request policy; reduced summer hours and university closures can affect access.

Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy .

Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.

Collection dates at a glance

The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.

Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
