STOP 01 / NIU IRAD
Schools: compare schedules with teachers’ annual reports
School schedules and teachers’ reports can help identify the administrative setting of a school or teacher in the mid-twentieth century.
School Schedules 1933–1961 · Accession 1/0227/01
School Teachers' Annual Reports 1941–1959 · Accession 1/0162/01
A focused question to ask
Which districts and schools are represented, how are the schedules arranged, and do the annual reports include names or only totals?
Evidence limit: Do not assume “school schedules” means pupil lists. Contents and district-level completeness require inspection.
STOP 02 / NIU IRAD
Oregon: follow decisions in city council minutes
Council minutes can place a street, service or property question in the city’s decision-making record.
Oregon: City Council Minutes 1869–1960 · Accession 1/0247/01
A focused question to ask
Is there an index for this street, person or subject, and which volume covers the target meeting date?
Evidence limit: Minutes document government business rather than every resident. A council mention does not establish residence or property ownership on its own.
STOP 03 / NIU IRAD
Buffalo Township: use the surviving financial snapshots
The catalog lists a short run of annual reports and a separately dated fund-publication statement. These can guide a tightly bounded question about township operations.
Buffalo Twp: Township Fund Publication Statements 1962–1962 · Accession 1/0107/02
A focused question to ask
What detail appears in the 1962 statement and the 1968–1969 reports, and are any supporting records held elsewhere?
Evidence limit: The cataloged dates do not form a continuous series. These financial records are not evidence that a particular family lived in the township.
IRAD is an Illinois Secretary of State program administered by the Illinois State Archives. Depository location: Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. Direct IRAD research requests to the regional depository, not the university’s separate archives or special collections.
Call to ask a question or schedule an appointment. The IRAD office is in Founders Memorial Library, Room 265, on the second floor. For a remote request, follow the statewide telephone/mail policy and confirm the current mailing address with staff.
Start with no more than two names, approximate dates, the county and the record type. Include the township or school where known and the accession number above. Ask whether an index exists, which volumes survive and what copying will cost. For an unindexed series, agree on a manageable search before requesting a long period. The statewide policy directs research requests to telephone or mail rather than email; wait for a response before sending another request. See the statewide research policy ↗.
Request template: I am researching [person or place] in [locality] around [years]. Your catalog lists [title], accession [number]. Which volume covers that period, is it indexed, and how can I consult or obtain the relevant pages? Please let me know any gaps, restrictions and copying charges.
Collection dates at a glance
The table lists IRAD series with verified date spans. Community collections above may have different or unspecified coverage and separate access rules. Catalog spans are starting points, not guarantees of every year, locality or individual. Use the Research Planner to compare your years with these cataloged series.

Keep the record and your interpretation separate.
Save the depository, collection, accession number, volume, page, dates and any copy correspondence. Record uncertain names as uncertain. A shared road, school or signature can suggest an association; it does not establish a family relationship.
