PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 4, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Columbus / countywide

Bartholomew County Public Library

Use school and newspaper evidence to separate people with similar names.

The genealogy portal links scanned county high-school yearbooks, a developing obituary database, a cemetery map, and print genealogy holdings. Local newspaper access includes Columbus papers from the 1870s onward through the in-library service.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the genealogy portal, select the yearbook school or newspaper service, and contact genealogy staff for help. Some newspaper and land-map resources require an onsite visit.

A question you can ask

Which school yearbooks and newspaper issues cover this person, address, and year?

Keep in mind

The obituary database is a work in progress; available newspaper years vary by service. A yearbook appearance establishes context, not a family relationship.

STOP 02 / Columbus

Bartholomew County Historical Society: Cline Keller Library

Look for material a courthouse never created.

Family genealogies, diaries, manuscripts, church and Bible records, cemetery indexes, photographs, maps, and architecture clippings are held in the museum research library.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the Society before visiting the second-floor library at 524 Third Street. Limited remote research is offered by phone or postal request; ask about current fees and accessibility.

A question you can ask

Is there a family file, diary, church record, or photograph linked to this surname and township?

Keep in mind

Donated family material can mix original evidence with later conclusions. Ask who compiled each item and whether sources are attached.

STOP 03 / Columbus / Indianapolis

Bartholomew County Clerk and Archives

Check where the older volumes are actually stored.

The Clerk identifies public archival deeds, estates, circuit court, probate, state, common-pleas and cemetery records, and notes that older order books also reside at the Indiana State Archives.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask County Archives for an appointment and exact series location before traveling. Marriage licenses issued in the county can be requested through the Clerk.

A question you can ask

Which office holds the docket and complete estate packet for this name and date?

Keep in mind

The county guidance includes older location information. Confirm present custody and retrieval arrangements rather than relying on an old street address.

STOP 04 / Bartholomew County Public Library

Columbus High School yearbooks with the 1918–1920 publication gap

Read the collection in context.

The library lists digitized Columbus High School volumes for 1916–1917 and 1921–1972. It explicitly states that 1918–1920 were not published. Hauser volumes are listed for 1958–2016.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the school/year links on the yearbook page. Ask the Reference Desk about physical high-school and middle-school volumes.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

A missing yearbook is not evidence a pupil did not attend; check another school record or newspaper. Coverage is school-specific.

STOP 05 / Bartholomew County Historical Society: Cline Keller Library

Cline Keller local business, school and family files

Read the collection in context.

The General File Collection groups local clippings, ephemera and histories by businesses, organizations, families, buildings, schools and congregations. A sample online group documents Irwin bank and family activity.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the digital file descriptions as leads and arrange an appointment for the second-floor research library. Request the exact subject or item number.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Digital selections do not inventory every file. Distinguish contemporary items from later historical narratives.

STOP 06 / Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives, Bartholomew County Public Library

School buildings and municipal planning in architectural records

Read the collection in context.

CIAA links Central Junior High renovation drawings for 1973 and 1978, Garfield School material, and City of Columbus project records. These can explain a vanished school or changed neighborhood.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the project list and linked digital collections. For originals, book a research appointment and give the building, designer, dates and desired formats.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Drawings document buildings, not pupil enrollment or all residents. The two Central Junior High dates are specific projects, not a continuous school-record span.

STOP 07 / Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives, Bartholomew County Public Library

Community voices in CIAA audio and moving images

Read the collection in context.

Collection C0031 includes interviews, public events and design presentations from 1967 onward. Search participants and project names as well as family surnames.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the collection link and digital recordings from the CIAA collections page; ask about undigitized recordings and playback arrangements.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Recording dates are not the life dates of participants. No verified terminal year or uninterrupted yearly coverage is asserted.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Bartholomew County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
