Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1, Stop 4: Otterbein Public Library Indiana Collection
    23 E First St, Otterbein, IN 47970

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Otterbein

Otterbein Public Library Indiana Collection

A school or church connection can identify the right local file.

The Indiana Collection includes local history, Otterbein school material and donated church and resident photographs and articles. The library is still seeking yearbooks to fill gaps.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the library with the school, congregation or family and approximate dates. Ask where the Indiana Collection is currently located and what has been cataloged.

A question you can ask

Do you have a yearbook or donated photograph connected to this school and year?

Keep in mind

The collection page flags relocation and ongoing cataloging. Do not assume complete yearbook coverage or an online photograph catalog.

STOP 02 / Indianapolis and online

Indiana State Library county research guide

Take a title and date range to the catalog.

Listed publications include Benton Review Weekly Newspaper Marriage Records Index and its Index of Wills and Estates, 1920–1995. These provide a different route from the civil-record indexes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title, then check the library catalog and ask staff about consultation or copies before traveling.

A question you can ask

Can the newspaper index identify an issue date for this marriage or estate?

Keep in mind

Published indexes and abstracts are finding aids. Follow their references to the underlying records; the list is not exhaustive.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis

Indiana State Library: Benton records on microfilm

Move from an estate notice to the court proceedings.

The film guide lists Partition Records volume 1, 1860–1889; Probate Order Books beginning in 1840; and Will Records volumes 1–3, 1857–1911.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the guide’s call number and volume to request the correct reel. Ask staff about available digital alternatives and any access restrictions.

A question you can ask

Which reel contains the order book and any partition proceeding for this estate?

Keep in mind

A reel inventory does not promise online images or a complete estate packet. Confirm missing volumes and whether loose files survive separately.

STOP 04 / Otterbein Public Library Indiana Collection

Otterbein school keepsakes and donated community files

Read the collection in context.

The library identifies Otterbein school trophies, photographs, articles and local-history material donated by churches and residents. It is seeking both high-school and elementary-school yearbooks to fill its collection.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask the library about the specific school, year or congregation. Its collection page says material is being relocated and cataloged, so confirm availability before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

No complete yearbook run or archival date span is published. Treat unlocated volumes as an access question, not proof that no school record survives.

STOP 05 / DePauw University Archives and Special Collections

Oxford church membership books beyond the courthouse

Read the collection in context.

Collection LOC-2011-1624 includes Oxford Circuit membership/church records 1862–1887, Aydelotte Circuit membership 1873–1879, and Oxford membership books 1896–1906 and 1901–1921. Later rolls and directories are listed separately.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request the collection and exact volume or box/folder. DePauw requires an appointment at least two business days ahead and photo identification. Ask about reproduction arrangements before traveling to Greencastle.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

These are distinct volumes, not a continuous register of all Benton residents. The collection summary starts 1873 although its item list includes 1862; use item dates and retain that discrepancy.

STOP 06 / Indiana Historical Society

Fowler cookbook contributors and local advertisers, 1909

Read the collection in context.

A free name index to the Fowler Presbyterian church’s 1909 cookbook identifies recipe contributors and advertisers, including women listed under husbands’ names. The original cookbook is held by IHS.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the published PDF, note its page references, and request the corresponding cookbook pages. Ask IHS for an appointment if you need material beyond its reference room.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

A recipe contribution or advertisement is a community association, not proof of church membership. Expand “Mrs.” names with independent records.

STOP 07 / Indiana Historical Society

A Fowler student’s dance cards and social network, 1928–1932

Read the collection in context.

Seventeen transcribed dance cards document events 1928–1932, many in Bloomington. Several belonged to Fowler resident and Indiana University student Ione Swan. They name partners, organizers, chaperones and musicians.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Read the free transcription first. For originals, cite Ione Swan Paugh Collection M 0404, box 5, folders 4–5 when contacting IHS.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The Benton connection is the owner, not the location of every dance. A named partner does not prove a relationship or attendance beyond what the particular card records.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

BENTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Benton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Ione Swan Paugh dance cards, 1928–1932

Seventeen transcribed dance cards include partners, chaperones, committees and musicians. Fowler resident Ione Swan kept some while attending Indiana University.

How to begin: Start with the free transcription; request M0404, box 5, folders 4–5 from IHS for the underlying cards.

What remains uncertain: Many events occurred in Bloomington. A name on a card is not proof of Benton County residence or a romantic relationship.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Understand the collection. Choose your next step.

Two selected collections, with practical ways to search and interpret the result. These are research suggestions, not findings about a particular person.

  1. Choose a source
  2. Check its limits
  3. Search and record
  4. Follow the next lead
Selected local collection

Oxford Circuit membership and church record

What it can tell you
Membership and church entries can place a person within a congregation or circuit. Distinguish joining, transfer, baptism and other events according to the actual entry.

Selected listed years: 1862–1887

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
These are distinct volumes, not a continuous register of all Benton residents. The collection summary starts 1873 although its item list includes 1862; use item dates and retain that discrepancy. Methodist Volume 7050; item-level range differs from collection summary. Consult actual entries.

How to search
Search the entire relevant volume, including indexes and later annotations. Track similarly named people and the specific congregation named within a circuit.

How to retrieve it
DePauw Archives: Oxford United Methodist Church records, LOC-2011-1624, Methodist Volume 7050, Oxford Circuit membership/church record 1862–1887. Arrange an appointment in advance.

Practical access
Request the collection and exact volume or box/folder. DePauw requires an appointment at least two business days ahead and photo identification. Ask about reproduction arrangements before traveling to Greencastle.

If nothing turns up
No match in one circuit volume does not rule out another congregation or denomination. The item range starts 1862 although the collection summary starts 1873; retain the item citation.

Selected local collection

Fowler Presbyterian cookbook name index

What it can tell you
A community cookbook preserves contributors and advertisers who may not appear in formal church histories. It can suggest associates or businesses to investigate.

Selected listed years: 1909

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
A recipe contribution or advertisement is a community association, not proof of church membership. Expand “Mrs.” names with independent records. Index to contributors and advertisers in a single cookbook; not a membership roll.

How to search
Search surnames and “Mrs.” entries, then follow the printed page references. Do not expand a husband’s initials into a woman’s identity without independent support.

How to retrieve it
Ask IHS for the corresponding page of the 1909 Fowler Presbyterian church cookbook, providing the contributor or advertiser and indexed page number.

Practical access
Search the published PDF, note its page references, and request the corresponding cookbook pages. Ask IHS for an appointment if you need material beyond its reference room.

If nothing turns up
Absence from this single cookbook does not show that someone lacked a church or town connection. Participation was selective.
