PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Sources checked October 25, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 4, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

Brown County Historical Society: Coulter Archive

Tax and school records can bridge gaps between censuses.

The archive lists property tax records, 1848–1974; high-school registers, 1907–1955; probate records, 1836–1945; oral histories; and organization scrapbooks.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call ahead to ensure an archivist is available. For remote inquiries, provide a concise research question and the family connection requested in the archive’s instructions.

A question you can ask

Which tax or school volume places this family in Brown County during these years?

Keep in mind

Availability varies by series. Older society pages give different hours and research policies, so confirm arrangements directly.

Brown County Public Library genealogy resources

Use the local newspaper alongside family recollections.

The library provides a route to Brown County Democrat archived issues from 1856 onward and offers Ancestry Library Edition and FamilySearch affiliate access.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start at the genealogy page for newspaper links. Ancestry requires the library network; some FamilySearch images require both a free personal account and onsite Wi-Fi.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper issues cover this event, and can I access the needed image at the library?

Keep in mind

A starting date is not a guarantee of every issue. Affiliate access does not unlock every restricted record.

Take a title and date range to the catalog.

The guide lists circuit-court publications covering 1836–1945, probate abstracts for 1836–1945 and Will Records Books A–B, 1845–1914.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title, then check the library catalog and ask staff about consultation or copies before traveling.

A question you can ask

Which surviving publication or record series covers the event despite the courthouse fire?

Keep in mind

The guide reports an 1873 courthouse fire with substantial losses. Confirm survival by record series rather than assuming all early evidence is gone.

BROWN COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Brown County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Frank M. Hohenberger Photograph Collection

Indiana University provides online photographs of Brown County people, buildings, landscapes and daily life, with additional work from other locations. The collection description identifies images taken from 1904 to 1948.

How to begin: Browse or search the university collection, then open individual records for names, dates, descriptions and identifiers.

What remains uncertain: A location or caption is a research lead, not proof that an unnamed person is an ancestor. Check item rights before reproducing photographs.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Selected local collection

Property-tax volumes beyond the courthouse

What it can tell you
Tax records may trace a taxpayer, property or financial obligation across years when other county evidence is missing.

Selected listed years: 1848–1974

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Inventory dates are broad; confirm gaps and formats. Broad archive span; confirm township and surviving volume.

How to search
Compare adjacent surviving years and retain the property description and assessment categories. Separate taxpayer identity from proof of residence or ownership.

How to retrieve it
Ask the Coulter Archive which township volumes survive within its listed 1848–1974 holdings and how to request the relevant entries.

Practical access
Call 812-988-2899 before visiting to confirm archivist availability and request the series.

If nothing turns up
The inventory span does not establish a volume for every year. Nonappearance may reflect exemption, tenancy, another district or missing records.

Source review: 2026-11-04; repository descriptions and finding aids checked, individual records not inspected. Search and interpretation suggestions are BWP guidance.

Selected local collection

High-school registers and eighth-grade letters

What it can tell you
A school register can document attendance in a particular educational community rather than merely a countywide residence.

Selected listed years: 1907–1955

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Inventory dates are broad; confirm gaps and formats. Register span; confirm school and grade. Letters are undated in this inventory.

How to search
Search the exact school and term; copy age, grade, guardian and attendance details only where the record actually provides them.

How to retrieve it
Ask the Coulter Archive for the relevant high-school register within 1907–1955 and whether related eighth-grade letters are identified by student.

Practical access
Call 812-988-2899 before visiting to confirm archivist availability and request the series.

If nothing turns up
The published range is a broad collection span. It does not establish every school, term or pupil, and the letters have no verified date span.
