Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 4, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Charlestown / Clark County

Charlestown-Clark County Public Library: Indiana Room

Family files and local ledgers can add detail beyond a census.

The collection list includes family books and files, church material, newspapers, diaries and ledgers on microfilm, and the Guernsey family collection, 1862–1877. Most county material is at Charlestown; branches emphasize their own communities.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Renovation notice checked November 4, 2026: the Charlestown branch is closed from October 31 into December. The genealogy page mentions possible advance appointments while the branch notice restricts entry. Confirm directly with the Indiana Room before traveling; do not assume walk-in access.

A question you can ask

Do the family files or church and ledger holdings cover this township and period?

Keep in mind

The published list says the microfilm reader has no printer. Confirm current capture options before expecting take-home scans.

STOP 02 / Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville Township Public Library: Family and Local History Room

Follow a town address into newspapers and special collections.

The library identifies microfilmed newspapers, family files and local history files as its most-used sources. It also holds a large collection of bound local history materials and extensive archives for several local organizations. Its published resources include a City of Jeffersonville Collection index and Clark County Poor Farm Cemetery burial information.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the room collection page and its indexes. For a research visit or request, identify the surname, place, approximate years or local organization, then ask staff which files, bound histories or newspaper microfilm may fit. Confirm retrieval arrangements and copying options before visiting.

A question you can ask

Are there family or local history files for this surname or place, and which newspaper years or organizational archives cover my question?

Keep in mind

Collection highlights were supplied by the library on October 26, 2026; specific organizational archive names, date coverage and copying arrangements were not supplied. An index is a locator. Poor-farm burial evidence does not by itself establish admission circumstances or relatives.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Clark County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Printed resources include court records for 1803–1808, indexes covering selected early court years, marriage books A–B for 1808–1822, and birth/death indexes for 1882–1920.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Can I identify the original court volume from this early printed reference?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

STOP 04 / Jeffersonville Township Public Library

Guernsey’s Monroe Township ledger and local business context

Read the collection in context.

The microfilm inventory lists the Guernsey Ledger, Monroe Township, 1860–1861, plus Jesse Dorsey’s Speedometer collection, October 1921–August 1929.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask staff for the named reel or collection and confirm reading and copying arrangements. Record each entry with its page and date.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

A ledger entry need not establish residence or kinship; determine what transaction the book records.

STOP 05 / Jeffersonville Township Public Library

Town-specific death records on microfilm

Read the collection in context.

Listed municipal death reels cover Jeffersonville 1921–1956, Clarksville 1907–1939, Charlestown 1907–1937, Sellersburg 1911–1937 and Borden 1913–1937.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Choose the town and date before requesting the reel. Compare with the county death series rather than assuming both contain identical information.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Listed spans do not guarantee every death was recorded. Distinguish place of death from usual residence.

STOP 06 / Jeffersonville Township Public Library

School memories, firefighters and Clarksville maps online

Read the collection in context.

Digital projects include interviews with Jeffersonville High School alumni from the 1950–1970 graduating classes, firefighter oral histories, and Clarksville historical photographs, ownership maps and ephemera.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the named project from Digital Collections. For an interview, record the speaker and time stamp; for a map, record its date and identifier before comparing an address.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Graduation years describe interview participants, not a complete school register. Oral histories are later recollections and require corroboration.

STOP 07 / Charlestown-Clark County Public Library, Indiana Room

Guernsey family papers and small personal records at Charlestown

Read the collection in context.

The inventory links the Guernsey family collection, 1862–1877; Joe H. Graves’s 1891 autograph book; and a letter from Howk & Naylor dated April 29, 1834.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the inventory’s digital item links first. The branch reports renovation closure from October 31, 2026 into December; ask Michelle at the genealogy contact whether a limited advance Indiana Room appointment is possible. Do not arrive expecting entry.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The general location notice says no building access; the genealogy notice mentions possible appointments. Confirm directly before travel. Personal papers are selective, not countywide coverage.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

CLARK COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Clark County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Clark County estate records at The Filson Historical Society

This Louisville repository’s Clark County records span 1808–1919, with the main estate material dating 1812–1837. More than 90 estates include inventories, sales, receipts and occasional dispute testimony.

How to begin: Read the online folder list, then ask The Filson for Mss. BL C592b and the named estate folder. Use its research inquiry route for remote help.

What remains uncertain: Folder dates may describe inventory, sale or settlement rather than death. The finding aid is online; that does not mean the original papers are digitized.

Selected local collection

Guernsey Ledger, Monroe Township

What it can tell you
A local ledger may connect a person with transactions and other community members.

Selected listed years: 1860–1861

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
A ledger entry need not establish residence or kinship; determine what transaction the book records. Listed microfilm ledger, not a census.

How to search
Identify the book’s purpose, then capture the full entry, date and page rather than copying only a name.

How to retrieve it
Ask Jeffersonville Township Public Library for the microfilmed Guernsey Ledger, Monroe Township, 1860–1861, and capture options.

Practical access
Ask staff for the named reel or collection and confirm reading and copying arrangements. Record each entry with its page and date.

If nothing turns up
The published title does not establish that every resident appears or that a named person resided in the township.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Listed spans do not guarantee every death was recorded. Distinguish place of death from usual residence. Town-specific microfilm; confirm individual record availability.

How to search
Search Clarksville for 1907–1939 and distinguish the place of death from the person’s usual residence.

How to retrieve it
Request the Clarksville death-record microfilm at Jeffersonville Township Public Library.
