County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / English

Crawford County Public Library genealogy department

Use local newspapers and family files together.

The department lists Mack Tucker records, family histories, obituary indexes, school yearbooks and newspapers with scattered coverage beginning in 1838.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send a short inquiry through the genealogy page or arrange a visit. Materials remain in the department; ask staff before copying and confirm microfilm availability.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper reel and family file cover this person and community?

Keep in mind

The newspaper run is incomplete, and the library does not hold every school yearbook. An index result needs the original article.

STOP 02 / Online through the public library

Memories of Crawford County

A photograph may identify a place before it identifies a person.

The library’s research policy describes a remote digital collection of photographs, postcards and other county-history items, including people, buildings and events.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the digital-collection address in the policy. Save the item description and identifier with any image used in research.

A question you can ask

What is the source of this photograph’s date or identification?

Keep in mind

Identification and dates may be supplied by donors. A digital image is not blanket permission to republish it.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis and online

Indiana State Library county research guide

Take a title and date range to the catalog.

Selected titles include Circuit Court Civil Order Books A–D, 1818–1871; Guardian Bonds, 1848–1896; and Deed Book A, 1818–1834.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title, then check the library catalog and ask staff about consultation or copies before traveling.

A question you can ask

Which guardian-bond or court entry points to the original file?

Keep in mind

The library’s county guide identifies original-record custodians. The local library separately describes volunteer-managed court archives; confirm the current location before visiting.

STOP 04 / Crawford County Public Library

Newspaper microfilm and family files at English

Read the collection in context.

The department lists Mack Tucker materials, family files, obituary indexes, local history notebooks and school yearbooks. Newspaper microfilm begins with scattered material from 1838.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Reference materials stay onsite; ask staff before copying. Use the genealogy inquiry form for a brief question and confirm staff availability before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Missing years and months are explicitly acknowledged. No complete school-yearbook run is claimed.

STOP 05 / Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society

School census, Patoka records and English alumni

Read the collection in context.

Its school inventory lists a Crawford County school census, 1917–1919 (shelf 4, item 62); Patoka Township school records; graduates, 1901–1976; and English alumni, 1909–1976. Selected yearbooks and commencement programs are also cataloged.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Download the school inventory and give the shelf/item reference when arranging a headquarters visit. The society offers appointments outside regular hours.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The inventory does not establish whether each volume is an original, copy or compilation. Alumni spans do not prove all graduates or every year survive.

STOP 06 / Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society

Union Township justice records and local civic life

Read the collection in context.

The catalog lists Wallace W. Pavey justice-of-the-peace material for 1896, 1897 and 1899–1907; commissioners’ records for 1818–1820 and 1834–1845; and John T. Atkins funeral records, 1915–1935.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask headquarters staff for the named inventory entry, format and usable copies. The catalog gives bookcase and shelf references.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

These are catalog labels, not a finding aid proving completeness. Do not bridge the missing 1898 year in Pavey coverage or treat all entries as originals.

STOP 07 / Crawford County Court Archives

Original early marriage and probate records

Read the collection in context.

The library identifies a separate volunteer-maintained county court archives holding early official marriage and probate records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the listed archive volunteer or library before visiting the former Dollar General building at 777 Indiana 64. Verify hours and the particular series location.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Do not confuse this building with the society headquarters at Oak Hill Circle. The published description does not supply complete date ranges.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

CRAWFORD COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Crawford County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Alexander Byerly business papers

Indiana Historical Society identifies SC0166, including timber-hauling and sawing receipts, a land-payment receipt and a 1903 chattel mortgage. Its article transcribes selected transactions.

How to begin: Search the article for names, then request SC0166 and the specific document.

What remains uncertain: The article title spans 1881–1903 while its collection citation says 1883–1903. Confirm dates against each original; the transcriptions preserve uncertain readings.
