Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Greensburg and online

Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library

An obituary index is a starting point for the full article.

The local-history portal links the library’s obituary and death-notice index, genealogy databases, and county offices for marriage, wills, land and vital records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the index from the portal and retain the publication reference. Ask the library about obtaining the full notice and access to subscription databases.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the full notice and its newspaper title, date and page?

Keep in mind

An index is not a full obituary or a guarantee of every newspaper issue. Verify dates and names against the article.

STOP 02 / Greensburg

Historical Society of Decatur County Museum

Ask whether a local family file contains original evidence.

The society invites general research and consultation of genealogical records housed at its museum.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the museum with a concise question before a research visit; ask staff what material is available for the family or organization.

A question you can ask

Which genealogical records or local-history files relate to this family?

Keep in mind

The public description does not give a detailed catalog or date coverage. This stop is a staff-assisted research route, not a claim of specific undisclosed holdings.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis and online

Indiana State Library county research guide

Take a title and date range to the catalog.

The guide lists Coroner Inquests, 1873–1948; Court Records, 1822–1848; and Will Records, 1822–1906.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title, then check the library catalog and ask staff about consultation or copies before traveling.

A question you can ask

Does the coroner publication identify an inquest file for this death?

Keep in mind

Published indexes and abstracts are finding aids. Follow their references to the underlying records; the list is not exhaustive.

STOP 04 / Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library

Obituary and death-notice index with a documented gap

Read the collection in context.

The library states two coverage blocks: 1841–1933 and 1950–2025.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the surname or its first letters, optionally including maiden names. The database has no wildcard operator. Use its linked obituary-request form for the article.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

1934–1949 is outside the stated database coverage. A failed search is not proof of no death notice. The index must be checked against the original newspaper.

STOP 05 / Historical Society of Decatur County Museum

Family histories, photographs and archival documents

Read the collection in context.

The museum describes documents, photographs, genealogical records and family-history collections, supported by staff and volunteers.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask about a named family, organization or event before visiting. Published regular access is Tuesday/Thursday 11–4 and first Saturday 1–4; other times require an appointment.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

No public item-level inventory or collection dates were located. This is a confirmed research service, not a claim that a particular school register survives.

STOP 06 / Decatur County Clerk

Court indexes, judgments and original case files

Read the collection in context.

The Clerk administers civil and criminal court records, including estates, guardianships and trusts, and maintains permanent judgment/order records and indexes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the published Clerk contact with a name, case type and approximate year. Ask whether older volumes or packets must be consulted onsite or have transferred custody. Modern online case lookup is not a complete historical index.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The current county page does not establish historical start dates or survival. Restricted matters may not be public; do not infer access from an index hit.

STOP 07 / Decatur County Recorder

Land records before the online index

Read the collection in context.

The Recorder links a Doxpop index for documents filed from January 1994 onward.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

For earlier deeds, contact the Recorder with grantor/grantee names and legal description; ask about book-and-page indexes and copying. The county office is the records contact; Doxpop is the search service.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The online cutoff is not the beginning of surviving deeds. Do not interpret a missing online result as missing historical records.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

DECATUR COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Decatur County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Doles, Hopkins and Stewart Family Collection

Civil War letters, deeds, payment agreements and family photograph albums connect several Decatur County families. The overall collection spans 1846–1959 and includes Burk, Buntain, McCoy and Johnson material.

How to begin: Consult the finding aid, then request relevant folders from IHS using M 1433 and OM 0713.

What remains uncertain: The online PDF is a finding aid. Some portraits are unlabeled; an album association does not establish the identity of every sitter.
