Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 5, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Jasper / countywide

Jasper-Dubois County Public Library

Use Wilson’s notes, local yearbooks, and newspapers together.

The portal links Wilson’s Historical Notes, local photographs, and digitized Jasper, Forest Park, and Northeast Dubois high-school yearbooks. It also offers the Dubois County Herald and Ferdinand News through Newspapers.com.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the free digital collection links first. Newspaper access requires being in the library and staff login; MyHeritage remote access requires a valid library card. Contact the genealogy librarian for print holdings.

A question you can ask

Which yearbook, Wilson volume, or newspaper title covers this family’s community?

Keep in mind

Yearbook ranges do not guarantee every issue survives. The cemetery map explicitly includes approximate locations and is not complete.

STOP 02 / Jasper

Dubois County Museum: John J. Fierst Library and Archives

A studio negative may survive even when a family copy does not.

The archives include personal papers, manuscripts, maps, selected newspapers and clippings. Photograph holdings include Sprauer, Chase, and Patmore studios, Robert McCarty Photography, and Picture Perfect.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Appointments are necessary for archival access. Contact collections@duboiscountymuseum.org with names, studio clues, and approximate dates; ask about search and reproduction fees.

A question you can ask

Can a studio name, image number, or approximate sitting date locate this portrait?

Keep in mind

Studio collections are not guaranteed to be fully identified. A visual resemblance or surname alone is not enough to identify a sitter.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Dubois County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

The guide identifies naturalization records, 1839–1954; marriage resources beginning in 1839; death indexes, 1882–2000 in separate volumes; and a will index, 1840–1924.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Which post-1839 record is the earliest surviving lead for this family?

Keep in mind

The 1839 courthouse fire destroyed almost all earlier records according to the State Library. Do not assume modern online databases restore that loss.

STOP 04 / Jasper-Dubois County Public Library

School yearbooks with issue-level navigation

Read the collection in context.

Dedicated lists currently show Jasper 1938–2025 and Forest Park 1954–2026; the genealogy overview advertises earlier starts of 1937 and 1953 respectively. Northeast Dubois is described as 1945–2026.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the individual school page and select the needed volume. Ask the genealogy librarian about print copies and the earlier years advertised on the overview.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Use the narrower inspected list starts for planner matching. The overview/list discrepancy is unresolved, and a date span does not ensure every pupil appears.

STOP 05 / Dubois County Museum, John J. Fierst Library and Archives

Studio negatives and unpublished personal papers

Read the collection in context.

The archives hold documents, manuscripts, personal papers, maps and music alongside selected newspapers. Named photographic holdings include Sprauer, Chase, Patmore, Robert McCarty Photography and Picture Perfect.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Arrange archival access before visiting. Give the Collections Committee the studio, surname, approximate sitting date or image number. The museum offers searches and reproduction for a small fee.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

No date ranges or complete sitter indexes are published. Museum opening hours do not replace the required archival appointment.

STOP 06 / Jasper-Dubois County Public Library

Wilson historical notes and county photographs

Read the collection in context.

The library links digitized Wilson historical-note volumes and indexes, plus a separate county photograph collection, on Indiana Memory.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin with the indexes and save volume/page references. Use the digital item’s source and rights fields before requesting an original or reusing an image. Contact the library for print holdings.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Indiana Memory is the digital access platform, not automatically the physical custodian. The notes are compiled history; verify their claims against original evidence. No comprehensive record-coverage dates established.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

DUBOIS COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Dubois County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

German church records, 1852–1995

Indiana Historical Society holds compiled birth, baptism, death, confirmation and marriage records for Augustana in Holland, St. James in Holland, and the Emmanuel/St. John church sequence.

How to begin: Request BV5358 for Augustana, BV5359 for St. James or BV5360 for the Emmanuel/St. John compilation. DVD1378 contains digital versions of the bound material; ask staff how those can be consulted.

What remains uncertain: The compilation includes a Martin County Lost River Township branch. Coverage differs by church, and the collection is compiled rather than the original parish archive. The finding aid requires permission for reproduction or publication.
