PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 5, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Connersville

Fayette County Public Library

Ask a focused question before requesting a broad family search.

The genealogy page supplies library research-request instructions, local-history titles including Connersville pictorial history and Whitewater Valley Railroad material, and onsite Ancestry Library Edition.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send a concise request with names, dates, and the exact event to genealogy@fcplibrary.lib.in.us. Ask about the obituary finder linked from the State Library guide and available newspaper coverage.

A question you can ask

Which local newspaper or obituary tool can cover this death date?

Keep in mind

The public page is not a complete inventory of original county records or newspapers. Confirm the particular title, year, and copy cost before visiting.

STOP 02 / Connersville

Historic Connersville: Fayette County Historical Museum

Put a workplace or canal reference into local context.

The organization operates the county museum, Canal House, and First Ward Hose House. The Canal House was built in 1842 as Whitewater Canal headquarters.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the volunteer organization at 765-825-0946 about visits and special arrangements. Ask whether photographs or interpretive sources relate to a named workplace or building.

A question you can ask

What source or photograph can help identify the factory, canal site, or neighborhood in this family story?

Keep in mind

The website verifies museum sites, not a comprehensive genealogical archive or employee roster. Treat this as a context and referral stop unless staff confirms specific records.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Fayette County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Printed holdings include court records, 1819–1849; marriages, 1819–1845 and 1870–1905; and will records, 1819–1895.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Can the court-record or will volume identify a case or estate packet to request?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

STOP 04 / Fayette County Public Library

Local obituary index: find the notice before assuming absence

Read the collection in context.

The library links a local-newspaper obituary index.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library resource page; if the search tool fails, send the name and approximate death date to genealogy@fcplibrary.lib.in.us.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The index tool timed out in verification. No coverage dates or completeness claim established. Ask for the newspaper notice itself.

STOP 05 / Historic Connersville: Fayette County Historical Museum

School artifacts and industrial context

Read the collection in context.

The museum describes artifacts from former local schools, Connersville-built vehicles, and canal surveying equipment.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit the museum or call 765-825-0946 to ask about a named school or workplace. Published museum hours are weekends 10–3; confirm before travel.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Artifacts provide context; no pupil register, employee list or cataloged school-date range is established.

STOP 06 / Historic Connersville

Cemetery maps and relocation context

Read the collection in context.

Three downloadable county cemetery/points-of-interest map sheets and a City Cemetery sheet are provided. The organization describes earlier cemetery losses and relocations.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the cemetery page and download its PDFs; follow a locality lead to the cemetery custodian for a burial or lot record.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

A locator map is not a burial register. Confirm an individual grave movement independently.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

FAYETTE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Fayette County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Longwood General Store daybook selections, 1837–1840

Published selections identify customers and people collecting goods on their accounts, with purchases and occasional labor credits. The original daybook runs from April 1837 through July 1840.

How to begin: Search the PDF, record the original page reference, then ask IHS about BV 2342 in the Nixon-Weichman Collection.

What remains uncertain: The article samples three portions of the daybook, not every transaction. A first name beside an account does not by itself prove a family relationship. The article PDF gives 1837 as the starting year, despite the directory listing saying 1839.
