PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Sources checked October 24, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 5, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / New Albany

Floyd County Library: Stuart Barth Wrege Indiana History Room

Build a timeline from city directories and local files.

Resources include New Albany directories, 1845–1920 online; county birth microfilm, 1882–1926; city birth microfilm, 1882–1925; photographs and family/local-history vertical files.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Appointments are recommended for assistance and archival use. Contact indiana@nafclibrary.org. Search the catalog for vertical files and use the library’s digital-copy request route.

A question you can ask

Which directory years and vertical files can document this household at this address?

Keep in mind

Reading-room materials are reference only. A directory address is evidence of a listing at publication, not continuous residence.

STOP 02 / New Albany

Fairview Cemetery burial records

Search beyond a surviving gravestone.

The library and Friends of Fairview provide thirteen burial-record volumes spanning selected dates from 1852 through April 2, 2024. These are published transcriptions based on cemetery records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Choose the volume covering the likely burial year, search spelling variants, and save the volume and page. Follow up with the cemetery when a detail needs confirmation.

A question you can ask

Can the original burial register or lot record confirm this transcribed entry?

Keep in mind

The listed volumes have gaps, including December 31, 1949 to April 1, 1950, and an endpoint gap between the 1865 and 1866 volumes. A transcription may contain errors; check the volume dates and original register.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Floyd County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Selected holdings include naturalizations, 1854–1926; citizenship applications index, 1854–1867; the first marriage book, 1819–1837; and will/bond record B, 1858–1864.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Can this citizenship index lead to the application and related court record?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

STOP 04 / Floyd County Library: Indiana History Room

School boards, graduation and teacher licensing

Read the collection in context.

Listed holdings: New Albany board minutes 1824–1969; county board minutes 1902–1956; graduation records 1892–1952; teacher licenses 1899–1933.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Book archival assistance through the Indiana Room before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Holdings spans do not guarantee every meeting or pupil. Confirm format and gaps.

STOP 05 / Floyd County Library: Indiana History Room

Orphan-home records and institutional leads

Read the collection in context.

Cornelia Memorial Orphan Home records are listed for 1877–1954; some Culbertson Home for Old Ladies material also survives.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask staff about restrictions and the specific record series.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Do not infer open access or complete resident coverage.

STOP 06 / Floyd County Library: Indiana History Room

Deeds and maps for a changing address

Read the collection in context.

Deed microfilm 1819–1973, deed indexes 1819–1999, plat maps 1810–1954, and Sanborn maps 1886–1963 are listed.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask for the index and corresponding image or map edition.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Index coverage extends beyond filmed deeds; map spans are not annual coverage.

STOP 07 / Floyd County Library / Friends of Fairview

Fairview burial volumes now extend into 2024

Read the collection in context.

The current library page links thirteen Internet Archive volumes, beginning September 1, 1852 and ending April 2, 2024.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Select the appropriate dated volume on the library page; retain volume and page references.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Listed endpoints leave November 19, 1865–January 6, 1866 and January–March 1950 uncovered. This is not proof no burials occurred. Internet Archive hosts digital volumes, not the cemetery originals.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

FLOYD COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Floyd County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

New Albany and Portland Ferry Company records

Indiana Historical Society’s published index identifies workers and businesses from a portage book, 1870–1872, and cash book, 1872–1876, within records dated 1862–1884.

How to begin: Search the article’s alphabetical lists, then ask for the company collection and film F0264 to inspect transactions.

What remains uncertain: The published name list omits original page numbers. A name may recur, and a payment does not by itself establish continuous employment.
