PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 5, 2026.

Sources checked October 25, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and access instructions checked November 5, 2026. Earlier repository corrections retained. Selected dates do not imply complete coverage.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Veedersburg

West Central Indiana Genealogy Research Library

Funeral records and family histories can supply the next question.

The Fountain County Genealogy Society lists local funeral-home records, newspaper announcements, family histories and yearbooks from Fountain and neighboring counties.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The library is open to nonmembers. Check current hours or arrange an appointment; send a focused email query to establish what it can supply.

A question you can ask

Which funeral-home record covers this death, and who supplied the information?

Keep in mind

Coverage extends outside Fountain County, and not every item is remotely available. Confirm the funeral home and dates.

STOP 02 / Covington

Covington-Veedersburg Public Library

Indenture and occupational records can reveal overlooked relationships.

Listed items include Fountain County Indentured Servant Records, 1847–1884; county World War activities, 1917–1918; and Troy Township Physicians & Dentists, 1828–1962.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact genealogy staff through the research page with the title and person or date range. Ask whether the item is an index, transcription or original.

A question you can ask

Does the indenture volume give a source citation and the names of all parties?

Keep in mind

A published compilation may omit details from the underlying record. Historical indenture terminology and relationships need careful interpretation.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis and online

Indiana State Library county research guide

Take a title and date range to the catalog.

The guide lists letters of administration, 1832–1846, and Will Abstracts Book I, 1827–1851, with original land records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify a title, then check the library catalog and ask staff about consultation or copies before traveling.

A question you can ask

Can an administration entry identify the next court volume to consult?

Keep in mind

Published indexes and abstracts are finding aids. Follow their references to the underlying records; the list is not exhaustive.

STOP 04 / West Central Indiana Genealogy Research Library

Funeral records, school annuals and family files

Read the collection in context.

The society lists funeral-home records, school yearbooks from Fountain and adjoining counties, family histories, and a large obituary collection spanning the 1830s through 2020.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Nonmembers may visit; ask by email which funeral home or school and years are represented. Appointments outside posted hours are available.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The obituary dates describe a collection span, not complete coverage. Funeral and yearbook dates are not specified.

STOP 05 / Covington-Veedersburg Public Library: Covington

The inventory lists county indentured-servant records 1847–1884 and Troy Township physicians and dentists 1828–1962.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request the title through genealogy staff; establish whether it is a transcription or an index.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Follow citations to originals; dates describe listed publications, not a full occupational census.

STOP 06 / Covington-Veedersburg Public Library: Covington

World War service context and local name indexes

Read the collection in context.

Listed resources include county World War activities April 6, 1917–November 11, 1918 and a county names-and-firms index 1826–1976.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask genealogy staff for a surname lookup and citation.

A question you can ask

Which original item covers this place and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

These are compiled works, not proof of military service or uninterrupted business operation.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

FOUNTAIN COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Fountain County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
