PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Noblesville · Hamilton County

Hamilton East Public Library: Crossroads Discovery Center

Start with the local collection, not only the subscription databases.

The center carries forward the Indiana Room's genealogy and local-history work, with books, historic newspapers, cemetery resources, yearbooks, maps, photographs, vertical files, and archival material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the current center page and online resources. General in-person help is available without an appointment; book a consultation or arrange access to a specific archival collection in advance.

A question you can ask

Which vertical file, map, or newspaper series covers this address and decade?

Keep in mind

Older references to the Indiana Room may describe past locations or services. Confirm current arrangements and the exact series needed.

STOP 02 / IU Indianapolis · partner collections

Hamilton County History digital collection

Study a school photograph alongside a residential directory.

The collection includes Earl Brooks photographs from about 1897–1904, township-school photographs from 1892–1909, and the 1907–1908 Noblesville directory and Hamilton County Gazetteer.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the collection or search by subject and owning institution. Save the individual item description and identifier with any downloaded image.

A question you can ask

Can the directory locate this household near a school shown in the collection?

Keep in mind

Brooks also photographed outside Indiana. A school group photograph does not identify every child, and an unlisted resident may still have lived in the county.

Indiana State Library: Hamilton County research guide

Identify a record series before requesting an original.

Selected holdings include Naturalization Certificates, 1855–1905 (ISLG 977.201 H222ing), and Naturalization Records, 1855–1926 (ISLG 977.201 H222s).

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to copy the title and call number, then search the State Library catalog or use its Ask-a-Librarian service to confirm access.

A question you can ask

Do these naturalization references lead to different stages of the same person's citizenship process?

Keep in mind

These are selected library holdings, often indexes or abstracts. The guide does not promise every original record or online images.

Noblesville mayor docket books: municipal court encounters

Mayor docket books, 1887–1950.

How to begin

Follow the library’s digitized-resources link to browse docket-book images in Indiana Memory. Record the volume and page.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

Municipal cases, not a countywide court index; a collection span does not establish every year or case survives.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

Some places remain unidentified. These are selected photographs, not a complete property survey. Date copied older photographs separately from the later copy.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

HAMILTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Hamilton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Noblesville mayor dockets and Stewart Title abstracts

Hamilton East Public Library links digitized Noblesville Mayor Docket Books, 1887–1950. Its archives also lists the Stewart Title Abstract Collection, covering mid-twentieth-century Hamilton County property transfers.

How to begin: Follow the docket-book link in the library’s Online Resource Center. For title abstracts, request the available index and an archives appointment, supplying the property address, owner and approximate years.

What remains uncertain: City court records and title abstracts have different purposes and coverage. Neither is a substitute for checking the original county deed, and a catalog listing does not establish an entry for a particular property.
