PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Franklin · original county records

Johnson County Museum of History: Genealogy and Local History Library

Search tax, apprenticeship, and estate indexes before a visit.

Online PDFs include tax indexes for 1843 and 1846–1849, an apprenticeship index, estate inventories, and physician licenses. The library holds original Johnson County records and other regional genealogy material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the PDF indexes, then contact the genealogy library with the entry and requested record. It offers onsite research and a fee-based remote search service; confirm current charges.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the complete apprenticeship or estate record referenced by this index?

Keep in mind

An apprenticeship does not by itself establish orphanhood. Indexes and estate inventories may omit relationships that appear elsewhere in the full file.

STOP 02 / Franklin Branch · local context

Johnson County Public Library: Dan Mitchell Historical Room

Compare family claims with local histories and community sources.

The room focuses on Johnson County history and genealogy, with additional Indiana and regional resources. Its guide includes local historical publications such as the history of First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, 1824–1944.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Sign in at the Adult Reference Desk before entering; reserve room time through the library calendar if needed. Submit a specific research question through the contact form.

A question you can ask

Does the room hold a church history or community source covering this family and time period?

Keep in mind

Staff offer limited assistance, not extensive research. A church history is not automatically a membership register.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis · county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Johnson County research guide

Identify a record series before requesting an original.

Selected holdings include Court Records, 1823–1853 (ISLG 977.201 J66hc), and the county's First Order Book.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to copy the title and call number, then search the State Library catalog or use its Ask-a-Librarian service to confirm access.

A question you can ask

Can an early court order explain the guardian, estate administrator, or neighbor named in another record?

Keep in mind

These are selected library holdings, often indexes or abstracts. The guide does not promise every original record or online images.

STOP 04 / Johnson County Museum of History, Genealogy Library

Apprenticeship files: separate child, master and placer

Dated index entries range from 1850 to 1875, with undated entries.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the PDF; use its file number and role code to request the document from the museum genealogy library.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

A means apprentice, M master and P placer. A placer can be a parent, guardian or township trustee; do not infer parentage from this role alone. Selected files, not continuous annual coverage.

Estate inventories and sale bills: follow the book reference

The index identifies multiple inventory and sale-bill volumes, including inventory books 1880–1884, 1884–1887, 1887–1892, 1892–1896, 1896–1902, 1902–1908, 1908–1913, 1913–1918 and 1918–1932.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Keep the exact book, page and probate-file or microfilm reference in the index. Ask museum staff for the linked entry and related probate material; remote research is a paid service.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

These are book spans, not proof every estate survives. Index includes guardianships and other proceedings as well as deceased estates.

STOP 06 / Franklin College Archives & Special Collections

Franklin College yearbooks: students, organizations and campus life

Digitized yearbook collection labeled 1898–2004.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the public FC Digital Collections. Physical archival research is by appointment on the third floor of B.F. Hamilton Library.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

Collection span does not establish a volume for every year. College attendance is not equivalent to county residence.

STOP 07 / Franklin College Archives & Special Collections

The Franklin student newspaper: names beyond formal registers

Student newspaper digital collection labeled 1908–2020.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow The Franklin archive from FC Digital Collections. Search names, organizations and events, then inspect the issue image and date.

A question you can ask

Which item covers my person, place and year, and how can I consult the underlying record?

Keep in mind

Student-produced reporting supplies leads and context; verify personal claims against independent records. Issue gaps are not summarized by the collection homepage.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

JOHNSON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Johnson County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Bergen-Covert family business and community papers

The 1820–1944 collection includes Hopewell blacksmith accounts, family letters, casket-business records and local organization material. It also describes Hopewell Cemetery Association papers and Baconian Literary Society records.

How to begin: Use IHS collection M 0502 and the box-and-folder inventory. John Bergen’s account book is listed as BV 0065, with microfilm F 0095.

What remains uncertain: Some correspondence survives as photocopies. Business accounts and organization files cover specific transactions or members, not every county resident.
