PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Bloomington

Monroe County Public Library: Indiana Room

Use local newspapers and clipping files to narrow an event date.

The Indiana Room holds Monroe newspaper microfilm, historical-event indexes and clipping files, family histories, plat maps, and migration-oriented genealogy references.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Email indianaroom@mcpl.info a few days before visiting. Appointments are encouraged; bring a flash drive for free scanning and funds if you want printouts.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper title and family-history file cover this surname and date range?

Keep in mind

Donated family histories and clipping files require provenance checks. Newspaper databases and microfilm may have different coverage.

STOP 02 / Bloomington

Monroe County History Center: Research Library

A probate or court packet may be more useful than another compiled tree.

The library holds original county land, marriage, probate, commissioner, and court documents. Its resource page supplies court and divorce indexes through 1960, family files, and an African American surname index for Among Colored People.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Consult indexes first and make a research appointment. Distance research is available for a fee through library@monroehistory.org. Ask about copy charges, including images made with your own device.

A question you can ask

Can this index reference be matched to the complete case or probate packet?

Keep in mind

The general online catalog excludes county records; use the separate indexes. Verify date coverage for the particular series, since overview and index spans differ.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / county-specific holdings

Indiana State Library: Monroe County research guide

Build a record checklist before ordering copies.

Selected holdings include court records, 1818–1875; naturalization records, 1854–1918; declarations of intention, 1854–1890; and grantor/grantee deed indexes, 1811–1870.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county guide to identify titles and call numbers, then ask the State Library about consultation or a targeted lookup. Its linked catalog and microfilm lists are separate from the printed abstracts.

A question you can ask

Which original deed book is cited by this grantor or grantee index?

Keep in mind

These are selected holdings and published indexes, not a promise of complete surviving records. Follow references back to the underlying record.

STOP 04 / Monroe County Public Library Indiana Room / Monroe County History Center

May 1914 school census: children, guardians and townships

The transcription records children by township with parent or guardian, birth month and year, and birthplace.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search the PDF for surname and township; cite its page. Ask the History Center to check the original when a name or relationship matters.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

A school enumeration is a snapshot, not a complete population census. A listed guardian need not be a biological parent.

STOP 05 / Monroe County Public Library Indiana Room

Showers Brothers Shop Notes: factory and employee context, 1917–1927

MCPL identifies a digitized employee newsletter run dated 1917–1927 in its community collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow Shop Notes from Community Collections. Browse issue pages around a known employment date and save the issue date and page.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

The published span does not establish every issue survives or every worker appears. Newsletter mentions are not personnel files.

STOP 06 / Monroe County Public Library Indiana Room

Bloomington High School Gothic yearbooks, 1908–1972

The dedicated Gothic collection describes volumes from 1908–1972. MCPL also maintains a name index covering several local schools.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the name index to locate a year and page, then inspect the digitized volume. Ask the Indiana Room about physical volumes absent online.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Some volumes are searchable and others require browsing. The collection is under construction; the span is not proof of an uninterrupted series.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

MONROE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Monroe County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Indiana Bedrock: limestone industry records

Monroe County Public Library describes photographs, letters, newspaper articles and archives concerning the Matthews Brothers Stone Company in Ellettsville, which operated from 1862 to 1978, alongside other limestone businesses and artists.

How to begin: Follow Indiana Bedrock from the library’s Indiana Room resource list to browse the digital collection. Try a company, quarry or worker’s name alongside Ellettsville.

What remains uncertain: Company operating dates do not establish continuous document coverage or an employee roster. Read each item description before attributing a person or workplace.
