PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 4, 2026.

Sources checked October 25, 2026. Additional collection descriptions and dates checked November 4, 2026. Earlier valid guide content retained; date spans do not guarantee complete holdings.

Start with one connection.

Bring a person, a place, approximate years, and one question. A township, congregation, school, or employer may reveal records a surname search misses. The custodian can be outside the county.

STOP 01 / Valparaiso

Larry J. Clark Genealogy Center

A county-focused collection includes more than family histories.

The library system describes yearbooks, microfilm, indexes and official county court records, with selected historical material also digitized through Internet Archive.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Check the genealogy center’s own hours, which differ from branch hours, and ask about the specific court series or school year before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which court series or index covers this named case?

Keep in mind

Selected digitization does not mean all court records are searchable online. Confirm record dates and format with staff.

STOP 02 / Chesterton / Duneland

Duneland History Center: local archives and undertaker index

An undertaker’s entry can lead beyond an obituary.

The center, formerly Westchester Township History Museum, provides an index to Lundberg and Flynn-Lundberg undertaker records for 1885–1942. Its archives also describe Prairie Club material and Chesterton Tribune photographs.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the index to identify a name and date, then request the underlying entry or arrange research access.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the complete undertaker entry and clarify any added notation?

Keep in mind

The index distinguishes added information and uncertain readings. Dates in remarks are not necessarily death or burial dates.

STOP 03 / Indianapolis / statewide

Indiana State Library: Porter County holdings

Turn a county index into a precise request for the underlying record.

Selected holdings include naturalization indexes covering 1854–1955 and 1849–1955, plus wills for 1839–1880.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the county guide, copy the title and call number, then check the catalog or ask the library about format and access before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which court and original naturalization record does the index identify?

Keep in mind

These are selected library holdings, often indexes or transcripts. A listed date range does not guarantee every event survives or that original images are online.

STOP 04 / Calumet Regional Archives

Westchester Township survey maps and surveyor notes

CRA021 Box 2 folder 11c lists Westchester Township survey maps and notes for 1830 and 1834.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request this exact folder from IU Northwest in Gary; finding aid available online.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Two cataloged years, not continuous 1830–1834 coverage. The item is described as a book; verify original versus compiled/reproduced status with staff.

STOP 05 / Calumet Regional Archives

Porter plat books, school annuals and town ephemera

CRA021 includes plat books 1966–1971, 1973–1974, 1976–1982 and 1992; Westchester Middle School yearbooks 1993–1994; Burns Harbor newsletters 2000.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Cite CRA021 and requested item/year to staff before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Selected items. Overall collection span 1830–2013 must not be presented as continuous records coverage.

STOP 06 / Duneland History Center

Duneland local-business and community archives

Pratt archives contain maps, telephone books and newspapers; Richardson sanctuary papers/artifacts extend through 2005; Prairie Club papers, photos and scrapbooks relate to dunes activity.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Make a research appointment; materials stay in building. Research help is free, copying may cost. Digitized photographs linked from center page.

A question you can ask

Which item or series covers my person, community and year, and how can I consult it?

Keep in mind

Collection-specific start dates are not supplied. Prairie Club activity 1908–1960s is not a verified holdings range. Retain existing undertaker 1885–1942 entry and its ambiguous-date warning.

Leave a trail another researcher can follow.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, volume, page or item identifier, link, and the date you consulted it. Follow an index to the original record when possible. Keep uncertain names and inferred relationships visibly separate from what the source states.

PORTER COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Porter County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

preliminary microfilm inventory entry

Marriage Records (microfilm)

Listed years: 1836–1921.

Source, access and coverage limits

This preliminary inventory warns that it may not be up to date. Give the State Library the title, volumes and years when asking about microfilm access or digital copies. Check the linked entry for gaps and confirm current availability before visiting.

Keep in mind: Selected Indiana State Library holdings. Microfilm overview bounds can include indexes and multiple volumes; consult item-level entries for gaps. These are not countywide survival dates or an assurance of online images. Preliminary inventory entries may not reflect current holdings; confirm with the library.

preliminary microfilm inventory entry

Deed Records (microfilm)

Listed years: 1872–1875.

Source, access and coverage limits

This preliminary inventory warns that it may not be up to date. Give the State Library the title, volumes and years when asking about microfilm access or digital copies. Check the linked entry for gaps and confirm current availability before visiting. The inventory also lists volumes A-Y, 1836-[1882], with a bracketed endpoint; that interval is not plotted. It says no volume Z or I-28.

preliminary microfilm inventory entry

Probate Complete Record Circuit Court (microfilm)

Listed years: 1862–1914.

Source, access and coverage limits

This preliminary inventory warns that it may not be up to date. Give the State Library the title, volumes and years when asking about microfilm access or digital copies. Check the linked entry for gaps and confirm current availability before visiting. The source flags missing volumes. Verify the exact volume needed rather than relying on the outer years.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Westchester Township justice-of-the-peace docket at the Lilly Library

Indiana History manuscripts, LMC 1544, include John Gondring’s Docket No. One for Westchester Township, 1876–1885. The inventory identifies it as Bound 39 and notes a Chesterton inscription.

How to begin: Request Bound 39 in LMC 1544 from Indiana University’s Lilly Library in Bloomington. The catalog asks researchers to arrange visits at least one week ahead because some materials are stored offsite.

What remains uncertain: The collection is open for research, but this does not establish that the docket is digitized. Confirm copying and publication conditions. This is one township docket, not all Porter County court records.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads
