PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

RESEARCH STOP 01

People, businesses and places in volunteer research files

Collection details

Volunteers maintain a database and files concerning Chippewa County people, places and businesses.

What to confirm

The genealogy and photograph subpages are under construction, so their titles are not inventories of confirmed series.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Marine Collection: Great Lakes transportation context

Collection details

The Marine Collection primarily offers publications on Great Lakes transportation. Library staff clarified on November 2, 2026 that vessel photographs are limited and mostly found within the books; this is principally a ship-interest collection rather than a genealogical collection.

What to confirm

The library confirmed that it does not hold passenger lists in this collection. Do not assume crew lists or individual employment records are available.

RESEARCH STOP 03

University yearbooks, newspapers and institutional files

Collection details

Library staff confirmed yearbooks, some student newspapers and institutional files. The developing virtual museum provides digitized campus photographs and documents.

What to confirm

The university states its archives exclude personnel and student records. No complete year run was verified.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Steere Room and local-history research tools

Collection details

The Judge Joseph H. Steere Room provides a local-history collection; library research routes also include digital Sanborn maps and onsite Ancestry Library Edition.

What to confirm

The library’s campus partner confirms these resources, but no item-level date inventory was located. Subscription access restrictions vary.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
