Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Hackley and Hume business records returned to Muskegon
Collection details
MSU Libraries reports that Hackley and Hume family and business records spanning 1859–1955 moved to Lakeshore in May 2026. The transfer includes ledgers and financial records, receipts, corporate papers, photographs and maps.
What to confirm
This is an overall collection span. Transfer does not guarantee immediate access to every box or that employee-level records survive. Older MSU citations may identify the former custodian.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Directories and local newspapers at the Torrent House
Collection details
The library places its historical Muskegon city directories at the Torrent House, while the latest directory is in the main library. Its department also provides the Muskegon Chronicle database and research workstations. Use an address or business name to search between census dates.
What to confirm
Directory ownership or listing is not proof of continuous residence. Database access differs from physical holdings and may require library credentials for remote use.
RESEARCH STOP 03
College history beyond a transcript request
Collection details
The college archives preserves institutional history and provides an Archive Catalog for identifying its holdings. For a student, teacher or employee, investigate the relevant campus, activity and period before requesting an individual record.
What to confirm
The public description does not verify complete annual coverage or access to private student files. Confirm the exact item; institutional archives and official transcripts are separate services.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Bluffton School: class pictures, yearbooks and neighborhood news
Collection details
The finding aid describes the collection as 1885–2012. More useful series dates include class photographs, 1969–2012; yearbooks, 1991–2012; and the Bluffton Community Crier, 1937–1940, with missing issues. PTO minutes, correspondence and school rosters provide further research leads.
What to confirm
The overall span is not continuous student coverage. Yearbooks and photos are described by series range, not a guarantee for every grade or year; some records concern living people. Confirm appropriate access and reuse with staff.
RESEARCH STOP 05
Amazon Knitting payroll and labor-cost ledgers
Collection details
The inventory identifies a payroll book for 1943–1945 (X88.97.10), a labor-cost ledger for 1938–1944 (X88.97.4), and company financial records spanning 1898–1945. These provide a concrete route for investigating work at a local textile employer.
What to confirm
The description of labor costs includes monthly totals and payroll analysis; it does not establish a complete named-employee roster. The collection extends into company dissolution and is not a personnel-file service.
RESEARCH STOP 06
Naturalization and deed microfilm beyond the surname card file
Collection details
The library lists declarations-of-intention indexes, 1859–1941, and declaration volumes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, November 3, 1859–September 26, 1906; naturalization volumes A–D, 1894–1906; deed indexes, 1838–1887; and deed records, November 10, 1838–1928.
What to confirm
An index span is not the same as the available record-image span. Volume 3 is not listed among the declarations; do not fill that omission. These are library microfilm holdings, not certification services.
RESEARCH STOP 07
Coroner indexes, changing street numbers and lumber marks
Collection details
The society database directory links coroner inquests for 1863–1915, street renumbering in 1925, historical street-name changes for 1887–1889, and lumbermen’s log marks. These can help explain an unfamiliar address or identify a record series to pursue.
What to confirm
These are compiled discovery resources. Retrieve the underlying inquest or other original where possible. Do not assume the date headings establish a complete run; the Schools section is marked Coming Soon.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Muskegon County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
