Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.
Stop 1, Stop 2, Stop 3, Stop 4: St. Clair County Library Main Library, Michigan Room 210 McMorran Boulevard, Port Huron, MI 48060
Local history is basement level; elevator available on request. Stop 4 deposit is local, not Lansing.
County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Rentschler Farm uses the linked published landmark coordinate; the Port Huron library position uses OpenStreetMap, linked in its key. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed November 1, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
Township agriculture and poor-farm records
Collection details
The library links poor-farm records, index and transcription labeled 1857–1893, plus June 1884 agricultural returns arranged by township. Start with the relevant township rather than a countywide surname search.
What to confirm
These records serve different purposes. An institutional entry does not establish kinship; agricultural returns do not enumerate every resident.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Port Huron addresses and county landownership
Collection details
Selected online directories include Port Huron 1871, Port Huron and Fort Gratiot 1890, the 1900 rural-route directory, and later volumes through 1960–1961. Plat atlases are available for 1876 and 1897.
What to confirm
These are selected volumes, not an annual run. Compare adjacent years and historical street names. Ownership alone does not establish residence.
RESEARCH STOP 03
School-specific yearbooks: search the school, then the year
Collection details
The library provides separate digital collections for 13 schools, including Algonac, Capac, Marine City, Marysville, Memphis, Yale and several Port Huron schools. St. Clair, St. Stephen and Ward Cotterell East are also listed.
What to confirm
The library explicitly states its collection is incomplete. No continuous date span is claimed here. A yearbook appearance may document an activity or enrollment, not graduation or a family relationship.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Port Huron court records and Marine Savings Bank ledgers held locally
Collection details
The state guide places RG 2020-19 at the county library: Port Huron police-court criminal cases, 1889–1921; criminal docket, 1921–1968; criminal-case index, 1929–1942; and Marine Savings Bank ledgers, 1911–1927.
What to confirm
A docket or index is not the case file. The listed spans do not promise complete files or a record for every resident.
RESEARCH STOP 05
China Township: electors, women voters, justice cases and assessments
Collection details
RG 2014-104 includes China Township justice records, 1859–1881; assessments, 1886–1934; electors, 1918–1945; and a separate 1928 women voter register.
What to confirm
These are series spans, not verified annual completeness. Voting records reflect eligibility rules and participation, not everyone in a household.
RESEARCH STOP 06
St. Clair city records, family files and resort-era photographs
Collection details
The museum identifies family histories, city records and directories, obituaries, newspaper material and photographs. In a November 2, 2026 reply, the museum explained that family histories are arranged by surname, including married and unmarried names, and cross-referenced with document-box information and family folders. Photographs are also organized by surname. Assessment records held by the museum are arranged alphabetically by surname within city ward and year. Its PastPerfect data-management system uses surnames as search keywords.
What to confirm
The museum has not supplied series date ranges or confirmed complete annual coverage. Its use of PastPerfect does not establish that its catalog or images are publicly searchable online. The Search Archives page was under construction when checked November 1, 2026. Confirm holdings, research appointments and access directly. Compiled family histories need corroboration against their underlying sources.
RESEARCH STOP 07
Marine City family and business files beyond published histories
Collection details
The museum confirms an archive of family and business files containing photographs, documents and handwritten letters. These can supply leads for a named family or company associated with the Marine City area.
What to confirm
No collection date inventory is published on the inspected pages. Do not infer that municipal or school records survive merely because the building formerly served those purposes. Compiled family files require checking their underlying sources.
RESEARCH STOP 08
Marine City maritime photographs held outside the county
Collection details
The Pesha studio glass-plate negatives document ships passing Marine City on the St. Clair River. The society illustrates a circa-1910 view of JOHN DUNN JR. and explains that the studio continued producing images after Louis James Pesha died in 1912.
What to confirm
This is an outside-county repository, not a local museum stop. Vessel photographs are not crew lists, and an uncaptioned person cannot be identified from the scene alone. Item dates vary; no complete chronological run is asserted.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of St. Clair County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Additional collections reviewed November 1, 2026; earlier baseline sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
