County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / MUSEUM ARCHIVE

Allen County Museum Library and Archive

Start with newspaper vital notices and naturalization abstracts.

What you can find

The museum offers Lima newspaper vital statistics for 1842-1880, Delphos notices for 1872-1879, and naturalization finding resources.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the online lists, then contact the archivist for source records and an appointment.

A question you can ask

Can you identify the newspaper issue or court volume behind this abstract?

Keep in mind

The page still carries an older library closure notice and says the library is closed. Confirm current access directly; museum hours do not establish research-room availability.

STOP 02 / NEWSPAPERS AND RESEARCH

Lima Public Library

Use the main library to move from an indexed notice to the newspaper page.

What you can find

The library lists Newspapers.com access at its main location; its FAQ identifies Lima News microfilm beginning April 24, 1905.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Check the genealogy resources page, then ask staff for the exact newspaper date and available format.

A question you can ask

Can I inspect surrounding issues for this obituary or family announcement?

Keep in mind

Database access is location-dependent and newspaper coverage may have gaps.

STOP 03 / MENNONITE AND UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES

Bluffton University Archives and Special Collections

Follow a congregation or mutual-aid connection beyond county boundaries.

What you can find

Musselman Library holds Mennonite Historical Collections, Central District Conference archives, university archives, and the Howard Raid Mutual Aid Archives.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the archives librarian with names, congregation, and dates to arrange research access.

A question you can ask

Which congregational or mutual-aid collection might document this family connection?

Keep in mind

A collection-level description does not guarantee individual membership records or unrestricted access.

STOP 04 / REGIONAL GOVERNMENT ARCHIVE

BGSU Center for Archival Collections

Look for household evidence in relief and inheritance records.

What you can find

The Allen inventory includes mothers pension case files from 1915 into the 1930s, inheritance tax records 1920-1955, and several naturalization series.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Send CAC the series name and reel reference from its inventory; ask about access, copying, and restrictions.

A question you can ask

Could a mothers pension file or inheritance tax record identify relatives missing from other sources?

Keep in mind

The inventory describes preserved holdings, not a fully searchable online database. Sensitive series may require review.

STOP 05 / VITAL AND ESTATE RECORDS

Allen County Probate Court

Request the court record behind a marriage or estate reference.

What you can find

The court lists births and deaths 1867-1908, marriages from 1831, and estates from 1835. Records may be original, microfilm, microfiche, or computerized.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the court with the parties, event, date range, and any known case or volume reference.

A question you can ask

Can you provide the complete estate file rather than only a docket summary?

Keep in mind

Adoption and civil-commitment records generally require court approval. Online index coverage is narrower than the historical holdings.

STOP 06 / LAND AND PLAT RECORDS

Allen County Recorder

Pair plat books with deeds to reconstruct an earlier neighborhood.

What you can find

The county recorder page links plat books 1-28 and its record search.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The office announces reopening October 26, 2026 at 237 North Main Street, Suite 132, Lima. Check the current notice before a visit.

A question you can ask

Which deed supports this ownership change, and can I inspect the complete record?

Keep in mind

The portal warns that some documents are redacted or absent online. Older portal address text may not reflect the office move.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

ALLEN COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Allen County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Early newspaper vital-statistic indexes

Lima newspaper vital-statistic index, 1842-1880, and Delphos newspaper index, 1872-1879, locate notices before statewide certificates. Common Pleas naturalization abstracts cover 1833-1861.

How to access it

Ask archivist Samantha Shrider at 419-222-9426 about requests and current access.

Evidence limit: The page retains an old closure timetable and also says the library is currently closed. Confirm access directly; indexes are leads to original notices and files.

Lima Locomotive and railroad drawings

Lima Locomotive Works drawings and photographs, New York Central collections and railroad books provide evidence about local industrial work and equipment.

How to access it

Arrange archival research or reproduction with Charles Bates, 419-222-9426.

Evidence limit: No complete collection date range or employee-name index is published. Ask about the particular shop, railroad, locomotive or person before travel.

Industrial and Black community oral histories

Recorded interviews cover Lima Locomotive Works, Superior Coach, Westinghouse, veterans and the Black community. Named interviews include Charles Schnell (1977), Byron Tyre (1978) and Emmett Murray Jr. (2003).

How to access it

Use the online videos and interview index; ask Charles Bates, 419-222-9426, about recordings not available online.

Evidence limit: Recording years are not the years described. Recollections need corroboration; the museum says associated stories remain under research.

School-age enumerations and public roads

Allen County school-youth enumeration, 1860-1881 (reel 104), school examiners, 1865-1877 (reel 8), and public-road records, 1831-1851 (reel 197), offer school and neighborhood evidence.

How to access it

Request the named Allen County series and reel; arrange CAC research access before the out-of-county trip. CAC telephone: 419-372-2411.

Evidence limit: These are microfilm inventory spans. The listing does not establish every year or school district is represented.

County Home residents and relief applications

County Home resident records, 1904-1951, admissions, 1909-1912, and relief applications, 1910-1912, are listed on reel 157. Use them to investigate institutional residence and assistance.

How to access it

Give CAC the series, date and reel 157; confirm retrieval and any access restrictions. CAC telephone: 419-372-2411.

Evidence limit: A resident-book span is not proof of continuous admission coverage or that every person receiving relief lived in the Home.

Mennonite congregational and mutual-aid collections

Mennonite Historical Collections, Central District Conference of Mennonite Church USA records and the Howard Raid Mutual Aid Collection offer community and denominational routes. Faculty and local manuscript collections supplement university records.

How to access it

Contact Carrie Phillips, 419-358-3450, to identify relevant collections and arrange consultation at Musselman Library.

Evidence limit: No collection-wide chronology is asserted. Verify the specific congregation, organization and series; denominational holdings extend beyond Allen County.

Index / listed span

Lima newspaper vital-statistic index

What it can tell you
A vital-statistic index points toward newspaper notices. The notice may contain relationships and context that an index omits.

Selected listed years: 1842–1880

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Index, not all vital events.. The page retains an old closure timetable and also says the library is currently closed. Confirm access directly; indexes are leads to original notices and files.

How to search
Search surname variants and related people, then request the actual newspaper notice with its date and page.

How to retrieve it
Ask Allen County Museum for the Lima newspaper vital-statistic index, 1842–1880, and copying options. Confirm library access directly because the published access notice needs clarification.

Practical access
Ask archivist Samantha Shrider at 419-222-9426 about requests and current access.

If nothing turns up
No index hit is not proof that an event never occurred. The index does not include every event or necessarily every notice.

Cataloged collection span

School-youth enumeration

What it can tell you
School-age enumeration recorded an administrative population, which can offer a household or district lead. It is not automatically an attendance register.

Selected listed years: 1860–1881

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Reel 104; inventory span.. These are microfilm inventory spans. The listing does not establish every year or school district is represented.

How to search
Identify the district and year, inspect headings and browse the relevant pages. Record exactly whom the enumerator counted.

How to retrieve it
Request Allen County school-youth enumeration, 1860–1881, reel 104, from BGSU Center for Archival Collections; confirm district coverage and research access.

Practical access
Request the named Allen County series and reel; arrange CAC research access before the out-of-county trip. CAC telephone: 419-372-2411.

If nothing turns up
The inventory span does not establish every district or year. A missing child cannot establish nonattendance or absence from the county.
