PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

  • Stop 1, Stop 2: Ashtabula County District Library / Ashtabula Public Library
4335 Park Avenue, Ashtabula, OH 44004

Morrison Genealogy & Archive Room is available during branch hours. Arrange staff help or specific materials in advance. Request Archives Days reel and frame numbers.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / NEWSPAPERS / YEARBOOKS / ASHTABULA MEMORY

Ashtabula County District Library Morrison Genealogy & Archive Room

Start with the combined county research collection.

What you can find

The Morrison room combines material formerly maintained by the Ashtabula and Geneva libraries and the county genealogical society. Holdings include clipping files, directories, yearbooks, photographs and newspaper microfilm. Ashtabula Memory adds online diaries, family histories and images.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Researchers may visit whenever the Ashtabula Branch is open. Contact archives@acdl.info beforehand for staff help or specific material. Use the library’s genealogy page for digital resources and FamilySearch affiliate access information.

A question you can ask

Which newspaper, directory or family-history file covers [person, community and dates], and can I obtain the original item behind an index?

Keep in mind

Some former Geneva holdings are now combined at Ashtabula. Confirm the current location before traveling. Digitization is selective; Ancestry Library Edition is in-library only.

STOP 02 / FINNISH CHURCHES / FAMILY PAPERS / COMMUNITY FILM

Ashtabula County Genealogical Society Archives Days microfilm

Search the reel inventory when a surname search finds nothing.

What you can find

Archives Days preserved residents’ documents and local records on microfilm. Reel ACGS-0 includes Zion Lutheran Finnish-language baptisms and marriages, 1901–1941. The Ashtabula reels list Bethany Lutheran marriages, 1891–1935, and baptisms and deaths across several date ranges, with reel and frame references.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the society’s topical inventories, then request the reel at Ashtabula County District Library, 4335 Park Avenue. Arrange help through archives@acdl.info; the society identifies the library as the viewing location.

A question you can ask

Can I view [reel and frames] for [church or family], and what information identifies the original record and its custodian?

Keep in mind

This is a topical index, not an every-name index. Filming-location labels do not prove every document concerns that township. Confirm readability, language assistance and any restrictions on recent church entries.

STOP 03 / HISTORICAL PAPERS / MAPS / HOUSE HISTORY

Walter Jack Research Library, Ashtabula County Historical Society

Use local historical writing to locate the underlying evidence.

What you can find

Inside the Jennie Munger Gregory Memorial Museum, the library holds the society’s books, historical papers, maps, photographs and essays. Its digital library includes county-history and Century Homes articles; a full inventory and digital repository remain works in progress.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact ashcohs@gmail.com or 866-533-3277 before visiting 5685 Lake Road East, Geneva-on-the-Lake. The society encourages seven days’ notice and describes research-library access as a membership benefit. Confirm seasonal availability and membership requirements.

A question you can ask

Does the collection include an original photograph, map or house file for [family or property], and what provenance accompanies it?

Keep in mind

A museum tour is not the same as a research appointment. The catalog is still developing; an absent online result is not proof that material is absent.

STOP 04 / DECLARATIONS / NATURALIZATION INDEXES / COURT FILES

Ashtabula County Clerk of Courts naturalization records

Follow the index to the citizenship document.

What you can find

The Clerk preserves county naturalization records and links digitized indexes, declarations of intention, transfer applications and related material. The office also provides a court-record search and case-file request route.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the official Clerk’s naturalization links or call 440-576-3821 with the name, approximate date and record type. The office is at 25 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson.

A question you can ask

Which declaration, petition or related case matches [person], and can I receive every surviving page with its volume and page reference?

Keep in mind

The posted index and volume links do not establish continuous coverage for every year or every court. A declaration alone does not prove citizenship was completed. Ask about unindexed and separately held records.

STOP 05 / HARBOR / RAILROAD / COAST GUARD CONTEXT

Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum

Put a harbor occupation back into its working landscape.

What you can find

The former lighthouse keeper’s house contains maritime, railroad, Hulett ore-unloader, naval and Coast Guard material. Highlights include the Thomas Walters pilot house and original sailing equipment, alongside transportation artifacts.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask info@ashtabulamaritime.org or 440-964-6847 about a named vessel, employer or photograph before visiting 1071 Walnut Boulevard, Ashtabula. Confirm seasonal hours and whether staff can arrange research assistance.

A question you can ask

Which documented object, photograph or local source relates to [ship, railroad or harbor employer] during [years]?

Keep in mind

Verified exhibit holdings do not establish surviving crew lists, payrolls or personnel files. Treat the museum as a context and referral stop unless staff confirms a specific archival record.

STOP 06 / UNDERGROUND RAILROAD / CIVIL WAR / 1876 DISASTER

Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum

Ask what evidence supports the local story.

What you can find

The museum interprets Underground Railroad history in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Its Americana collection includes Civil War artifacts and Ashtabula history, including the 1876 bridge disaster.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the museum’s tour and scheduling pages. Regular tours are seasonal; group and off-season visits require an appointment. Confirm reservations before traveling.

A question you can ask

Which contemporary document or documented object supports [person’s reported connection], and where can the complete source be consulted?

Keep in mind

This is an interpretive museum, not a verified name-search archive. A family tradition or nearby residence does not prove Underground Railroad participation. Separate documented individuals from broader regional context.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

ASHTABULA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Ashtabula County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

microfilm

Marriage records [microform], 1811-1901.

Listed years: 1811–1901.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use the linked State Archives catalog entry to identify the series and request research access or a copy from Ohio History Connection. Confirm the volume and year before visiting; a catalog entry does not promise online images.

Keep in mind: Selected catalog holdings; inclusive endpoints do not establish that every year or entry survives.

Microfilm

Births, 1867-1892, v. 1-2

Listed years: 1867–1892.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the OGS library for the county, collection title, date and reel. Confirm viewing and copying arrangements before visiting.

Keep in mind: Inventory updated 2012; current holdings have not been reconfirmed by staff. Inclusive dates are not proof of continuous coverage or online image access.

Microfilm index

Marriages 1812-1910, Index, v. 1-2

Listed years: 1812–1910.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Early Ashtabula County records at Western Reserve Historical Society

WRHS catalog collection MS 2065 spans 1811–1870 and includes census material, election poll books, wolf-scalp payment certificates, justice-of-the-peace subpoenas and warrants, marriage licenses and tavern licenses.

How to begin: Search the WRHS catalog for MS 2065 or “Ashtabula County, Ohio, Records.” Give the manuscript number and record type when asking the research library about consultation or copies.

What remains uncertain: The catalog describes six containers, not a complete county-record series or a fully digitized database. Ask staff which years and townships are represented before planning a visit.
