PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / CHURCH AND CEMETERY FILES

New Bremen Historic Association Genealogy Department

A maiden-name index can reconnect women across marriage records.

What you can find

The association describes translated St. Paul, St. Peter, and Zion church records, cemetery inscriptions, and a marriage compilation with maiden-name index covering 1835-1922.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Its genealogy page places the compiled card file at New Bremen Public Library. Confirm access and ask how to locate the original church entry.

A question you can ask

Does the marriage card identify parents, birthplace, or witnesses, and which register supplied it?

Keep in mind

Translations and compiled cards are finding aids. Coverage varies, and the source page includes historical staffing information.

STOP 02 / COMMUNITY HISTORY

New Knoxville Historical Society

Follow family stories through biographies, interviews, and early homes.

What you can find

The society website organizes biographies, interviews, church and school histories, photographs, and agricultural history. It also offers material about the community connection with Ladbergen, Germany.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the topical sections, then contact the society about sources. Heritage Center tours are available by appointment.

A question you can ask

What original photographs or documents support this family biography or house history?

Keep in mind

Retrospective accounts and commemorative biographies should be corroborated; a shared community origin is not proof of kinship.

STOP 03 / LOCAL HISTORY LIBRARIES

Auglaize County Public Library

Ask which branch holds the local file for your town.

What you can find

The system describes local obituaries, family documents, and newspaper resources, with holdings differing by branch. It also provides Sanborn map access.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call the Wapakoneta main library for guidance to the appropriate branch. Ancestry Library Edition is for in-library use; remote Sanborn access requires a library card.

A question you can ask

Which branch has newspapers or family files for this village and decade?

Keep in mind

The system overview does not give a complete title-by-title inventory.

STOP 04 / REGIONAL GOVERNMENT ARCHIVE

Wright State University Special Collections and Archives

Check preserved county records beyond the current courthouse database.

What you can find

Collection LGR-AUG-1CTY-MFM contains 18 reels spanning 1840-1938 overall, from offices including the auditor, clerk, county home, probate court, and recorder.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The archive currently announces a reading-room closure for facility upgrades. Contact library-archives@wright.edu for available assistance and reopening before travel.

A question you can ask

Which reel and date range cover the county-home or probate entry I need?

Keep in mind

Overall collection dates do not apply to every series. The catalog entry is not a promise of online images; reference service is limited during closure.

STOP 05 / COURT RECORDS

Auglaize County Clerk of Courts

Older cases may require a courthouse search even when modern cases are online.

What you can find

The clerk provides a Common Pleas CourtView portal and explicitly warns that records before February 1, 2000 may not appear there.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county public-access page, then contact the clerk for earlier records during office hours.

A question you can ask

Can you locate an older civil case under these party names and identify the surviving papers?

Keep in mind

The online database may be incomplete and is subject to correction. Preserve case numbers and request underlying documents.

STOP 06 / MUSEUM AND LOCAL INDUSTRY

Wapakoneta Local History Museum

Explore the businesses and cultural life surrounding a family.

What you can find

The historical society museum holds artifacts from Wapakoneta and eastern Auglaize County, including a locally manufactured Kreitzer buggy and material illustrating the Shannon family theatrical connection.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the Auglaize County Historical Society about visiting the museum at 206 West Main Street and about research questions.

A question you can ask

Are there photographs or supporting records for this local manufacturer, performer, or family?

Keep in mind

An artifact exhibit supplies context; it does not establish that a particular ancestor worked for the business.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

AUGLAIZE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Auglaize County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Repository holdings

Marriage records

Listed years: 1848–1921.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact Wright State Special Collections and Archives with county, series and date; submit a research request or arrange a reading-room visit. The guide identifies holdings, not online record images.

Keep in mind: Exact county span in repository guide; confirm volumes and format before visiting.

Repository holdings

Marriage consent records

Listed years: 1906–1926.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact Wright State Special Collections and Archives with county, series and date; submit a research request or arrange a reading-room visit. The guide identifies holdings, not online record images.

Keep in mind: Separate consent series, not all marriages.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Translated church cards and maiden-name marriage index

Translated cards cover St. Paul, St. Peter and Zion German church records through 1922. The marriage compilation covers 1835–1922 and has a maiden-name index.

How to access it

The genealogy cards are at New Bremen Public Library, not the association museum. Ask the association about surname research and the library about onsite access.

Evidence limit: Translations and indexes are derivative evidence. Seek the original register and verify names, witnesses and places. A starting year for all church cards was not verified.

1848 German Township landowners

Online landowner transcription derives from the 1848 tax duplicate and includes New Bremen and land later in Jackson Township.

How to access it

Read the online list, then trace the cited tax/history sources for the original assessment context.

Evidence limit: The online list is a later transcription, not the original tax book; it will not enumerate all residents or tenants. Do not impose present township boundaries.

School certificates and a schoolyard photograph

The society’s 2020 acquisition report lists 1908 and 1911 grade certificates, a 1924 reading-report booklet and a 1926 Hoge Brush Schoolyard photograph.

How to access it

Ask info@nkhistory.org to identify and retrieve these reported acquisitions before arranging a visit. Seasonal open houses are not year-round research hours.

Evidence limit: These are individual donated items. The report does not establish complete school registers or current processing status.

Insurance, shop and mill records

Reported acquisitions include a 1906 Farmers Home Mutual Fire Insurance ledger, a 1921 Eversman Meat Market sales slip and a 1958 Lock Two Mills report.

How to access it

Describe the exact item and year when requesting access; confirm availability with the volunteer society.

Evidence limit: Isolated items are not continuous business archives or proof that every customer is named.

Marriage consents separate from marriage records

Genealogy inventory lists Auglaize marriage records 1848–1921 and marriage consents 1906–1926.

How to access it

The archive currently announces a reading-room closure for facility upgrades. Contact library-archives@wright.edu for available assistance and reopening before travel.

Evidence limit: The consent series is not a list of all marriages; obtain the underlying entry. This repository is outside Auglaize County.

Selected collection

German Township landowners

What it can tell you
The 1848 German Township landowner transcription provides a property lead, not a list of all residents.

Selected listed years: 1848

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Transcribed tax list; later Jackson Township territory included. The online list is a later transcription, not the original tax book; it will not enumerate all residents or tenants. Do not impose present township boundaries.

How to search
Read the source chain, preserve original spelling and identify the parcel or assessment context. Account for territory later in Jackson Township.

How to retrieve it
Start with the New Bremen Historic Association’s online 1848 list, then follow its cited tax and history sources to the underlying record.

Practical access
Read the online list, then trace the cited tax/history sources for the original assessment context.

If nothing turns up
Tenants and other nonowners may be absent. Modern township boundaries cannot be imposed on this historical list.

Cataloged collection span

Farmers Home Mutual Fire Insurance ledger

What it can tell you
An insurance ledger may document business relationships or insured property. Inspect its headings before interpreting a named person’s role.

Selected listed years: 1906

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Single reported ledger. Isolated items are not continuous business archives or proof that every customer is named.

How to search
Look for a name, property and dated transaction, then compare entries and account references.

How to retrieve it
Ask New Knoxville Historical Society about the Farmers Home Mutual Fire Insurance ledger reported for 1906 in its 2020 acquisition report; confirm current availability.

Practical access
Describe the exact item and year when requesting access; confirm availability with the volunteer society.

If nothing turns up
One reported ledger is not a complete insurance archive or customer list. An absent name cannot rule out a policy or property connection.
