PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / URBANA NEWSPAPERS / RESEARCH HELP

Champaign County Public Library

Search the newspaper, then ask for a focused lookup.

What you can find

The library lists online Urbana newspapers for 1822–1930 and onsite microfilm for 1822–2024. Its genealogy service provides limited assistance and scanned responses.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the genealogy page for the digital archive or send a narrow request to reference@champaigncountylibrary.org. FamilySearch affiliate access is available on library computers.

A question you can ask

Ask which title and issues cover the event date and community.

Keep in mind

Runs may contain gaps. Staff do not trace complete family histories; subscription tools have their own access requirements.

STOP 02 / BURIAL BOOKS / CHURCH / INFIRMARY

Champaign County Library Local History Computer

Make a plan for files that cannot be searched from home.

What you can find

Onsite files include Oak Dale burial-book scans and an 1886–2006 transcription, Evergreen Cemetery lists and photographs, Carysville church records, an infirmary index and local military photographs.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit the Local History Room at 1060 Scioto Street, Urbana. The library explicitly says these computer files are not available online.

A question you can ask

Ask for the source and page behind a transcription and whether a personal research copy can be made.

Keep in mind

A computer index is not the original record. The listed collection includes compiled and donated material of differing evidentiary value.

STOP 03 / LOCAL ARCHIVES / ARTIFACTS

Champaign County Historical Society Museum

Search the museum archive before requesting physical materials.

What you can find

The society preserves county documents, artifacts and historical materials and provides an online Archives Search alongside controlled access to physical archives.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 937-653-6721 before research at 809 E. Lawn Avenue, Urbana. Volunteer assistance and retrieval should be arranged in advance.

A question you can ask

Ask about a particular school, community, business or family donation and its provenance.

Keep in mind

The general description does not promise complete surname coverage. Distinguish this Ohio museum from similarly named Illinois repositories.

STOP 04 / WWII / AVIATION CONTEXT

Champaign Aviation Museum

Put a veteran’s aviation experience in material context.

What you can find

The museum focuses on World War II aircraft restoration and the experiences of veterans and their families. Aircraft exhibits and restoration work offer context for aviation stories.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the contact form or call 937-652-4710 before seeking documentation beyond the public exhibits. Admission is listed as free.

A question you can ask

Ask whether the museum holds relevant personal stories or artifacts and whether their documentation is accessible.

Keep in mind

No comprehensive personnel-record archive was verified. This is a context and referral stop, not a substitute for military service records.

STOP 05 / DEEDS / PROPERTY HISTORY

Champaign County Recorder

Follow an ownership trail through recorded instruments.

What you can find

The official county website links its recorder’s CountyFusion search. Land documents can supply earlier owners, legal descriptions and references to other instruments.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through the county Recorder link. Confirm the historical coverage and offline-copy procedure before relying on a name search.

A question you can ask

Ask which direct or reverse index covers the date and how to retrieve a cited book and page.

Keep in mind

Earliest online coverage was not verified. Present-day ownership or a missing search result does not settle historical ownership.

STOP 06 / EARLY MARRIAGES / CHILDREN’S HOME

Wright State University Special Collections and Archives

Look outside the courthouse for regional archival copies.

What you can find

The university lists Champaign marriage records for 1805–1864 and children’s-home holdings.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Its reading room is closed through Fall 2026. Ask library-archives@wright.edu about remote reference and the relevant series.

A question you can ask

Request exact dates, format and access conditions before scheduling future work.

Keep in mind

Collection access is limited during the closure; no onsite research appointments are available.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Mechanicsburg Public Library

Mechanicsburg school yearbooks with explicit gaps

What you can find

The library-linked yearbook site provides selected Mechanicsburg High School volumes, 1954–2021. The listed years contain substantial gaps.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Choose the individual year’s PDF. For missing years use the library contact form or call 937-834-2004.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

Do not advertise an uninterrupted 1954–2021 run. Planner intervals reflect only years listed on the inspected landing page.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Champaign County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Oak Dale burials: compare index and scanned books

Local computer inventory lists Oak Dale Cemetery transcriptions 1886–2006 and scanned burial books from the early 1800s through 1934, including transfers from Ward Street Cemetery.

How to access it

Use the local-history room computer; ask reference staff for the relevant burial-book image, not only the transcription.

Evidence limit: Early-1800s is the library’s broad wording, not an exact start year. A transferred burial may reflect an earlier cemetery.

Carysville church, infirmary and military files

Computer files include Carysville Church Records, an infirmary index, World War I photographs and soldiers’ discharge material.

How to access it

These are local-history computer files. Contact reference@champaigncountylibrary.org about a specific name, township or record before visiting.

Evidence limit: No precise coverage dates were verified. Index absence is not evidence that a person never entered the infirmary or served.

Urbana newspapers: online and onsite spans differ

The genealogy page lists digitized Urbana newspapers 1822–1930 and microfilm 1822–2024.

How to access it

Start with the library’s digital newspaper gateway; for later issues request onsite film or a limited lookup. Scanned requests may be emailed by reference staff.

Evidence limit: These broad spans may contain issue gaps and title changes; search by newspaper and date.

Urbana University special collections after closure

The 2020 museum newsletter reports receipt of more than 400 boxes of Urbana University special collections, including John H. James’s land deed, degree-printing material and yearbooks.

How to access it

Search the museum’s online catalog and request a specific university topic, date or item before visiting. Contact champaigncohistory@gmail.com.

Evidence limit: 2020 is the transfer date, not the collection’s chronological coverage. Confirm processing and availability rather than assuming every box is cataloged. The September/October 2020 newsletter PDF is currently unavailable online. Ask the museum for the issue and current collection access.

Mechanicsburg school yearbooks with explicit gaps

The library-linked yearbook site provides selected Mechanicsburg High School volumes, 1954–2021. The listed years contain substantial gaps.

How to access it

Choose the individual year’s PDF. For missing years use the library contact form or call 937-834-2004.

Selected collection

Oak Dale Cemetery transcription

What it can tell you
A burial transcription can locate an entry, but the burial book supplies the source context. Burial and death dates may differ.

Selected listed years: 1886–2006

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Derivative burial transcription; compare scanned books. Early-1800s is the library’s broad wording, not an exact start year. A transferred burial may reflect an earlier cemetery.

How to search
Search surname variants and related burials; compare the transcription with the scanned book and its headings.

How to retrieve it
Ask Champaign County Library staff for the Oak Dale Cemetery files on the local-history computer and the corresponding burial-book image, page and entry.

Practical access
Use the local-history room computer; ask reference staff for the relevant burial-book image, not only the transcription.

If nothing turns up
The 1886–2006 transcription span is not proof of every burial. Transfers from an earlier cemetery can complicate interpretation.

Cataloged collection span

Mechanicsburg High School yearbooks

What it can tell you
Yearbooks document selected students, staff and activities. A photograph or name does not alone prove graduation.

Selected listed years: 1954–1955, 1957, 1963–1979, 1981, 1983, 1985–1987, 1990–1991, 1994–1995, 1999–2021

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Do not advertise an uninterrupted 1954–2021 run. Planner intervals reflect only years listed on the inspected landing page.

How to search
Open the exact Mechanicsburg volume, browse class and activity pages, and retain the printed caption and page.

How to retrieve it
Use the library’s year-by-year PDF list. Ask Mechanicsburg Public Library about missing volumes rather than assuming the online run is complete.

Practical access
Choose the individual year’s PDF. For missing years use the library contact form or call 937-834-2004.

If nothing turns up
The selected intervals contain gaps. A failed text search may reflect OCR; an absent student may simply not be pictured.
