Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / FAMILY FILES / OBITUARIES / NEWSPAPER MICROFILM

Clermont County Genealogical Society collection at Doris Wood Branch

Search the surname files beyond the online index.

What you can find

The society’s Batavia collection includes family-history notebooks, surname folders, obituary cards, specialized county indexes and newspaper microfilm beginning in 1814. Its separate online cemetery and obituary databases provide additional entry points.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the public library catalog for books and microfilm, and the society’s Library-Physical Resource catalog for donated files. Materials remain in the library. Contact the CCGS librarian through its request form before a focused visit.

A question you can ask

Does the notebook or surname file for [name] include source documents, and can I consult the complete item?

Keep in mind

The society says notebook cataloging is complete but folder entry is still in progress, with A through R completed. A missing catalog hit is not proof that no file exists. Verify current branch hours.

STOP 02 / NATURALIZATIONS / PARTITIONS / COURT JOURNALS

Clermont County Records Center

A court dispute may name relatives missing elsewhere.

What you can find

The official research inventory lists naturalizations 1811–1929, partition records 1853–1967, chancery records 1824–1857, tax duplicates 1821–1991 and several Common Pleas and Ohio Supreme Court series.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the Records Management research inventory to identify a series, then contact the office of origin as directed by its request FAQ. Supply names, approximate dates and the record series; confirm arrangements before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which partition or court case concerns [person and land], and are the supporting papers available with the journal entry?

Keep in mind

Inventory ranges do not guarantee every case survives. Marriages, estates and wills are referred to Probate Court; land records to the Recorder. The website’s series descriptions should not be treated as an interpretation of legal jurisdiction.

STOP 03 / ESTATES / GUARDIANSHIPS / EARLY VITAL RECORDS

Clermont County Probate Court and CCGS probate finding aids

Use the index to request the file, not just the entry.

What you can find

CCGS links digitized will indexes for 1810–1963, wills for 1810–1900, and published wills, estates and guardianship indexes covering 1800–1900. It identifies Probate Court as custodian of original probate and early vital records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin with the society’s Records and Indexes page and its FamilySearch links, then use the official court site to request an identified record. A free FamilySearch account may be needed.

A question you can ask

Can I obtain all surviving papers for [estate or guardianship], including the inventory, accounts and named heirs?

Keep in mind

Indexes are finding aids, not complete transcriptions. Image access can vary. Do not assume every year or every supporting paper is online.

STOP 04 / LAND TRANSACTIONS / EARLY DEEDS / SOLDIER DISCHARGES

Clermont County Recorder

Follow both the property and the recorded document.

What you can find

The Recorder preserves land transactions in online and physical holdings. CCGS also points to early deed books and indexes, 1800–1838, and historical soldier discharge volumes, 1863–1893, whose originals are with the Recorder.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the Recorder’s official search route or call 513-732-7236 about older books at 101 East Main Street, Batavia. Record book, page and instrument details when requesting copies.

A question you can ask

Which index leads to [person’s deed or historical discharge], and can I obtain the entire recorded instrument?

Keep in mind

The historical discharge set has three volumes with separate indexes. Online coverage is not the same as total office holdings. Modern military-discharge access may differ from historical records.

STOP 05 / PHOTOGRAPHS / VILLAGE LEDGERS / LOCAL HISTORY

Clermont County Historical Society archives

Ask about the society’s changing research location.

What you can find

The society describes archival documents, photographs and other historical material. Its current homepage highlights preserved Village of Batavia ledger books and announces a move of archives and collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the society through its official website before visiting. Explain the surname, community and date range, and ask which location currently provides access to the requested material.

A question you can ask

Could the Batavia ledgers or a named photograph collection document [family, business or address], and what citation accompanies the item?

Keep in mind

Older pages still mention Harmony Hill open houses in Williamsburg. The homepage’s relocation notice means those details should not be assumed to describe current archive access. No complete online inventory was verified.

STOP 06 / MILFORD / MIAMI TOWNSHIP / REFERENCE LIBRARY

Greater Milford Area Historical Society at Promont

A community museum can supply the setting around a family.

What you can find

Promont combines period furnishings and rotating exhibits with a reference library. The society focuses on Milford and Miami Township and preserves the former home of Governor John M. Pattison.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask info@milfordhistory.net or 513-248-0324 about research-library access at 906 Main Street, Milford. The site lists public tours on first, third and fifth Sundays, but research arrangements should be confirmed separately.

A question you can ask

Does the reference library hold a documented photograph, local history or family resource for [Milford or Miami Township subject]?

Keep in mind

A museum tour does not guarantee access to research collections. The page warns that private events can change public opening times. Specific library holdings and reproduction policies require confirmation.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Goshen Township Historical Society

Goshen History Library and museum catalog leads

What you can find

The Anchorage History Library holds Goshen documents, photographs, books and memorabilia; museum artifacts and ephemera are cataloged in PastPerfect.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the curator or call/text 513-613-4070 for a subject-specific appointment. The museum is at 1843 State Route 28, separate from the Cook Log Cabin Heritage Center.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

No collection-level date inventory is published. Some objects are on temporary loan or too fragile for display. The page shows conflicting librarian email spellings, so use the unambiguous curator contact.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

CLERMONT COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Clermont County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Surname notebooks, files and obituary cards

Donated family notebooks, surname folders and obituary cards can supply family narratives and leads absent from record indexes.

How to access it

Use the public-library catalog for books and films and the society Library-Physical Resource catalog for donated files. Materials stay in the Batavia library; ask the society librarian before a focused visit.

Evidence limit: Notebook cataloging is complete, but folder cataloging only covers A-R as checked. A missing catalog result does not establish that no file exists.

Felicity school and community photographs

Item b7p277 depicts the Felicity-Franklin graduating class of 1959. Other Sharp images document county communities and school buildings.

How to access it

Open the Oscar H. Sharp Collection site and choose Browse Items or search by place or subject. Retain the item identifier and ask library staff about related prints or caption information.

Evidence limit: The class photograph is one dated item, not an enrollment register. The library owns the prints but does not claim all copyrights.

Partition, tax and county-government journals

Partition records 1853-1967 can lead to divided-property disputes; tax duplicates 1821-1991 trace assessed owners; commissioner journals 1834-1997 document county business.

How to access it

Identify series, person and approximate year. Requests begin with the office of origin; call 513-735-8660 to coordinate Records Center research. Posted office hours are weekdays 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Evidence limit: Inventory ranges are not guarantees of complete cases or supporting papers. Do not confuse tax listing with proof of residence or kinship.

Batavia village ledger books at the Armory

The society identifies preserved Village of Batavia ledger books at its new Armory home, offering leads to named residents and village activity.

How to access it

Arrange access with the society before travel and specify the village, subject and dates. Ask which volumes are accessible during relocation and digitization.

Evidence limit: Exact ledger dates and a complete inventory were not published in the primary page. The older About page still gives Williamsburg; current homepage explicitly announces the Batavia move.

Goshen History Library and museum catalog leads

The Anchorage History Library holds Goshen documents, photographs, books and memorabilia; museum artifacts and ephemera are cataloged in PastPerfect.

How to access it

Contact the curator or call/text 513-613-4070 for a subject-specific appointment. The museum is at 1843 State Route 28, separate from the Cook Log Cabin Heritage Center.

Evidence limit: No collection-level date inventory is published. Some objects are on temporary loan or too fragile for display. The page shows conflicting librarian email spellings, so use the unambiguous curator contact.

Cataloged collection span

Felicity-Franklin class photograph

What it can tell you
A dated class photograph can anchor a school research question. Names require a caption or other documentary evidence.

Selected listed years: 1959

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Single graduating-class image b7p277; identities require corroboration.. The class photograph is one dated item, not an enrollment register. The library owns the prints but does not claim all copyrights.

How to search
Inspect the full image and catalog description before cropping. Separate a supplied identification from your own hypothesis.

How to retrieve it
Use Sharp Collection item b7p277, Felicity-Franklin class photograph, 1959; ask Batavia library staff about captions and related prints.

Practical access
Open the Oscar H. Sharp Collection site and choose Browse Items or search by place or subject. Retain the item identifier and ask library staff about related prints or caption information.

If nothing turns up

Partition records

What it can tell you
Partition proceedings can document shared property interests and named parties. Read the pleadings to establish any stated relationships.

Selected listed years: 1853–1967

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Check index and surviving case papers.. Inventory ranges are not guarantees of complete cases or supporting papers. Do not confuse tax listing with proof of residence or kinship.

How to search
Use the index to locate the case, then request surviving papers and associated orders rather than relying on the index alone.

How to retrieve it
Identify Clermont County partition records, approximate year and parties within the listed 1853–1967 span. Begin with the office of origin and coordinate with the Records Center.

Practical access
