Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

Keep in mind

The site includes compiled family information as well as historical images. Verify relationships separately and check reuse permission.

STOP 06 / DEEDS / TAX FOLLOW-UP

Clinton County Recorder

Follow land ownership across the Archives cutoff.

What you can find

The Recorder directs early deeds to Archives and handles deeds after approximately 1856. Its page also identifies archived tax records: digital 1820–1907 and later large volumes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

A question you can ask

Ask for the grantor/grantee search covering the relevant deed and how to request the matching archived tax year.

Keep in mind

Digital tax records are not necessarily publicly downloadable online. Confirm access and deed coverage before visiting.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

CLINTON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Clinton County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Cataloged collection span

Manumission documents

What it can tell you
Manumission documents concern legal freedom and can name people, places and prior transactions. Interpret the document’s legal purpose and date carefully.

Selected listed years: 1838–1861

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Inventory span; check individual documents. Inventory endpoints do not establish completeness or universal coverage.

How to search
Read the complete document, including endorsements, and transcribe names and status language without silently modernizing it.

How to retrieve it
Ask the Clinton County History Center research library for the manumission documents listed for 1838–1861, with a name and approximate date. Confirm fees and access.

Practical access
Research-library hours: Wednesday–Friday 1–4; other visits by appointment at 937-382-4684 or genealogy@clintoncountyhistory.org. Posted admission is $5 for nonmembers; FamilySearch affiliate access is free. Selected-page copies require a $0.25–$0.50 minimum donation per page.

If nothing turns up
This is not a census of Black residents or all formerly enslaved people. Absence cannot establish a person’s legal status.

Index / listed span

Hicksite Men Ledger index

What it can tell you
A ledger index can point to a religious or community record. It is a finding aid, not the underlying entry.

Selected listed years: 1803–1843

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Index only; request underlying entry. An index is not the original ledger. A military exemption is not proof of military service.

How to search
Search variants and associated names, then establish the meeting, volume, page and type of action recorded.

How to retrieve it
Ask the History Center for the Hicksite Men Ledger index listed for 1803–1843 and how to obtain the indexed original entry.

If nothing turns up
The inventory label and dates do not establish affiliation for every named person. A missing index hit does not prove nonmembership.
