PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Choose a starting point for your question.

Local input: Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society supplied collection highlights and library referrals on October 24, 2026. See its collection entry.

6 · Follow the records beyond the county.

Wright State University holds Darke County material outside the county. It is not plotted as a local stop. Check its current access instructions before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / ORIGINAL ESTATES / SURNAME FILES / NEWSPAPERS

Garst Museum Research Center and Darke County Genealogical Society

Original estate packets survive outside the courthouse.

What you can find

Garst lists original Darke County estate records from 1817–1893, more than 5,000 family surname files, church and military sources and the Draper Papers. The society adds local newspaper microfilm and compiled family histories.

How to begin

Contact genealogy@garstmuseum.org or 937-548-5250 at 205 North Broadway, Greenville. Research materials stay on site. The society describes email delivery for requests up to eight pages and mailed larger packets; confirm current copying, postage and admission costs.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Can I obtain the complete estate packet for [name and date], including receipts and inventories, and its archival reference?

Keep in mind

Surname files mix contributed material with records and photographs. Check each item’s provenance. Membership, admission and reproduction fees differ; no promise of a complete surname or estate file is implied.

STOP 02 / LOCAL NEWSPAPERS / SCHOOL MEMORABILIA / FAMILY COLLECTIONS

Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society research library

Explore the collections the society recommends first.

What you can find

The society highlights military records and photographs; its physical Arcanum Times newspaper collection; Arcanum school binders of photographs and memorabilia; extensive material on Arcanum, Pitsburgh and Ithaca; and estate collections from the Ivester and Smith families. Family letters, stories and a surname file are also available. Collection priorities supplied by AWTHS on October 24, 2026 (personal communication).

How to begin

Review the online reference list and research guidelines before contacting the society through its website. Bring names, approximate dates and the community. Its shelf guide states there is no internet service and copying costs apply.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which Arcanum Times issues, school binders or family collection folders cover [name, community and dates], and how can I inspect or request copies?

Keep in mind

Confirm newspaper issue dates, gaps, collection formats and copying arrangements before visiting. The Ivester and Smith estate collections are family collections; this description does not establish that they are court probate files. A surname file may contain contributed research rather than independently verified facts.

STOP 03 / VERSAILLES POLICY / DIGITIZED MICROFILM

Worch Memorial Public Library, Versailles

Read the local newspaper around the event.

What you can find

The library provides Versailles Policy microfilm dating to 1890 and says its microfilm has been digitized for computer viewing. Genealogy books and on-site Ancestry Library Edition are also available.

How to begin

Contact 937-526-3416 before visiting 790 South Center Street, Versailles. Ask how to access the digitized newspaper and whether staff can help with a specific issue or copy.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which Policy issue covers [date or event], and can I obtain the full page with the newspaper title and date?

Keep in mind

The page does not establish a continuous newspaper run or remote access to the digitized files. Ancestry access is explicitly in-library only. Confirm current opening days.

STOP 04 / GENEALOGY / IN-LIBRARY ANCESTRY

Arcanum Public Library

Pair local research with library database access.

What you can find

AWTHS recommends the library for genealogy research. Its official database directory lists Ancestry Library Edition, Fold3, HeritageQuest and Sanborn fire insurance maps.

How to begin

Visit 101 West North Street, Arcanum, or call 937-692-8484 to ask about the genealogy collection and research assistance. Ancestry Library Edition is explicitly available only inside the library.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which local genealogy materials cover [family and dates], and what computer or library-card arrangements do I need?

Keep in mind

Database coverage varies. Confirm eligibility and access requirements for each resource; the online list does not establish the contents or completeness of the local genealogy collection.

STOP 05 / GENEALOGY / LOCAL REFERRAL

Greenville Public Library

Ask about genealogy materials and newspaper research access.

What you can find

AWTHS referred researchers to Greenville Public Library’s genealogy resources and reported Ancestry and Newspapers.com access in its October 24, 2026 reply (personal communication).

How to begin

Contact the library before visiting to confirm current subscriptions, genealogy holdings, computer availability and any library-card requirements.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Can visiting researchers use Ancestry and Newspapers.com, and which local genealogy materials should I request?

Keep in mind

This is an AWTHS referral. Database availability and on-site versus remote access have not yet been independently confirmed with Greenville Public Library. Do not assume a personal subscription or remote access is included.

STOP 06 / JUSTICE OF THE PEACE / FAMILY PAPERS / LOCAL NEWSPAPERS

Wright State University Special Collections: Darke County materials

Look beyond county borders for a surviving manuscript.

What you can find

The university’s Darke County Records Collection, MS-67, spans 1857–1938 and includes receipts, correspondence, summons and contracts. Its Darke subject guide also identifies Swank/Martin property papers and selected 1910–1912 issues of The Darke County Boy.

How to begin

Wright State’s July 22, 2026 notice closes the reading room through Fall 2026 for upgrades. Onsite appointments are unavailable; contact library-archives@wright.edu or 937-775-2092 for remote reference with limited collection access. Supply collection identifiers and confirm reopening before travel.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which folder in MS-67 or the Swank/Martin papers mentions [person], and can I obtain its complete description or a copy?

Keep in mind

These are selected collections, not a comprehensive county archive. Finding aids may be online when document images are not. Check restrictions and the exact folder dates.

STOP 07 / PROBATE CASES / OFFICIAL RECORDS / CUSTODIAN CHECK

Darke County Probate Court

Separate an online copy from the official record.

What you can find

The court provides access to selected records through its website and identifies the official records as held at its Greenville office. For early estates, also check Garst’s separately documented 1817–1893 holdings.

How to begin

Contact the probate office at 937-547-7345, 300 Garst Avenue, Greenville. The court lists weekdays 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Its current notice requests email to courtadmin@darkeprobatejuvenile.org if phone trouble prevents contact.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Where is the complete file for [case or estate], and what identification or citation should I provide for a copy?

Keep in mind

The court warns online information is a time-sensitive copy and may lag the official record. Specific historical coverage was not established by the homepage; ask before assuming a missing online case is absent.

STOP 08 / DEEDS / PARTNERSHIPS / PROPERTY HISTORY

Darke County Recorder

Use the older index when the online search runs out.

What you can find

The county lists deeds, mortgages, partnerships and related recorded instruments. Its office page links land-record searching beginning in May 1996 and mentions a planned extension to January 1980.

How to begin

Contact 937-547-7390 at 504 South Broadway, Greenville, or follow the search link in the official county office directory. Ask which older grantor/grantee books remain outside the online search.

Research details & a question to ask

A question you can ask

Which index and recorded instrument document [person or business], and can I obtain the full book-and-page copy?

Keep in mind

The webpage’s statement about extending coverage by the end of 2023 is a dated plan, not verification that the work is complete. Confirm actual coverage and copy fees directly.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

DARKE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Darke County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Cole family papers at the University of Kansas

The finding aid describes photocopied family correspondence, including letters from Cole, Wise and Elston relatives in Darke County. It also identifies photocopied Darke County Grange roll books and minutes from the 1870s.

How to begin: Open the container inventory and identify writers and folders. Ask Kenneth Spencer Research Library about consultation or copies, citing RH MS 987. Letters are arranged by the writer’s surname and given name.

What remains uncertain: The catalog states no access restrictions, with use potentially limited by physical condition. This does not mean all items are online or cleared for republication. No individual letters were examined for this guide.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

What it can tell you
A local weekly newspaper can document commencement, civic activity and family events. Separate reported facts from editorial or secondhand statements.

Selected listed years: 1899–1902, 1903–1905

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
1899–1902; 1903–1905. May 11, 1899–Jan 2, 1902; Aug 27, 1903–Mar 30, 1905. Gap after Jan 2, 1902 through Aug 26, 1903; annual matching only broad filter.

How to search
Choose an actual issue and page, search name variants, then read the surrounding notice and its heading.

How to retrieve it
Ask AWTHS for Arcanum Weekly Times microfiche: May 11, 1899–January 2, 1902 or August 27, 1903–March 30, 1905. Confirm an appointment and the exact issue.

Practical access
