PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / MICROFILM

Bossard Memorial Library local history

Look beyond online obituaries to school, river and neighborhood history.

What you can find

The genealogy collection includes Gallia school yearbooks, cemetery books, family histories and Ohio River material. Newspaper microfilm includes Gallipolis, Vinton and Middleport titles.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit 7 Spruce Street, Gallipolis, or send a specific request to reference@bossardlibrary.org; 740-446-7323 extensions 241 and 242. Staff research is limited. Scanners can save to removable media.

A question you can ask

Which yearbooks and newspaper reels cover [school or town] in [years]?

Keep in mind

Obituary orders and copies have fees. Ask about coverage before traveling; a title listing does not establish every issue survives.

STOP 02 / ONLINE / NEWSPAPERS

Bossard newspaper digital archives

Search community columns between census years.

What you can find

The library lists Gallipolis Daily Tribune from 1895 through June 2022, Times Sentinel from February 1966 through June 2019 and more recent River Cities papers. Its microfilm also includes Gallipolis Journal, 1825–1918, and Bulletin, 1868–1918.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Enter through the library's digital newspaper announcement. It provides original and updated archive links; try the alternate if cropping or loading fails.

A question you can ask

Can you check the original newspaper image for [name, date and article]?

Keep in mind

Some issues are missing. The library notes that its microfilm can provide better newspaper photograph copies than the online archive. This is a second route into the same library's holdings.

STOP 03 / CULTURAL LIBRARY / WELSH FAMILIES

Madog Center for Welsh Studies

Follow Welsh settlement through language, family history and regional context.

What you can find

The University of Rio Grande center maintains Welsh and Welsh-American books plus a family history and genealogy room. Its regional work includes churches, cemeteries and the Welsh Scenic Byway.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Arrange a visit at welsh@rio.edu or 740-245-7186. Davis House is at 15 Lake Drive, Rio Grande. Published public hours are weekdays 8:30–4; appointments are strongly recommended, including for weekends.

A question you can ask

Do your family-history materials identify [surname] in [Welsh church or township]?

Keep in mind

The public overview does not specify complete church-register holdings or surname coverage. The affiliated Welsh-American Heritage Museum is in Oak Hill, a separate location outside Gallia County.

STOP 04 / HISTORIC SITE / RIVER COMMUNITY

Our House Tavern

See the social world of early Gallipolis.

What you can find

The restored 1819 tavern interprets dining, travel and community gatherings. Its rooms and Lafayette's 1825 visit provide context for the town's French heritage and Ohio River connections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

432 First Avenue, Gallipolis. Call 800-752-2618 for an appointment outside seasonal opening hours; confirm the current season before visiting.

A question you can ask

Which documented local objects or exhibits illuminate [family's occupation or period]?

Keep in mind

This is a historic-site visit, not a verified general genealogy archive. The visitor page does not promise guest registers or individual family files. Admission charges apply.

STOP 05 / COUNTY RECORDS / LAND

Gallia County Recorder

Trace neighbors and transfers with the recorded document.

What you can find

The office maintains indexed real-estate records used to reconstruct chains of ownership. Its official website links the county records search.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with Property Searches, then request the relevant document or older index assistance. Contact Deputyrecorders@galliacountyoh.gov or 740-446-4612 extensions 1247, 1248 or 1329. Office: 18 Locust Street, Gallipolis; weekdays 8–4.

A question you can ask

How do I search grantor and grantee indexes for [surname] during [years], and obtain the deed?

Keep in mind

The public instructions do not establish a historical start date for searchable images. A negative online search does not exclude older volumes.

STOP 06 / COURT / CASE RECORDS

Gallia County Probate Court

Use a case search as a lead to the underlying probate file.

What you can find

The court provides an official electronic record-search gateway. Its forms identify probate-will and related proceedings, but the search notice does not define complete historical coverage.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the court's Record Search, read its limitations, and request verified records directly from the court or during regular business hours.

A question you can ask

Does an estate or will file survive for [person, approximate death], and what index covers that period?

Keep in mind

The system warns of posting delays and possible changes. Historical completeness and document-image availability require confirmation; the displayed result is not a certified copy.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Gallia County Genealogical Society

School personnel by district, 1938–1939

What you can find

Online transcription of the 1938–1939 school personnel directory is organized by district, including Addison, Bidwell, Centerville, Cheshire, Clay and Raccoon.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse linked pages at the directory index; cite the original directory and transcription. Society office posts Wednesday and Friday 10–1, or appointment at 740-446-4242.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

Personnel directory, not a pupil enrollment list.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

GALLIA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Gallia County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Listed years: 1864–1921.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use the linked State Archives catalog entry to identify the series and request research access or a copy from Ohio History Connection. Confirm the volume and year before visiting; a catalog entry does not promise online images.

Keep in mind: Selected catalog holdings; inclusive endpoints do not establish that every year or entry survives.

microfilm

Probate Court Death record [microform], 1867-1916

Listed years: 1867–1916.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use the linked State Archives catalog entry to identify the series and request research access or a copy from Ohio History Connection. Confirm the volume and year before visiting; a catalog entry does not promise online images.

Keep in mind: Selected catalog holdings; inclusive endpoints do not establish that every year or entry survives.

microfilm

Marriage record [microform], 1803-1911

Listed years: 1803–1911.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Gallia County Genealogical Society, OGS Chapter

Private, discoverable Facebook group

A local history and genealogy community identified on Facebook. Use it as a starting point for a focused question about a surname, place or possible record source.

Access and rules: Facebook identifies this as a private, visible group. Membership approval is controlled by its administrators. Read the current rules before posting. Posted rules restrict promotion, advertising or selling; keep research questions on topic.

Verification limits: The group identity and visible access information were checked. Member contributions and specific holdings were not independently verified. Ask permission before reusing an image or private contribution.

School personnel by district, 1938–1939

Online transcription of the 1938–1939 school personnel directory is organized by district, including Addison, Bidwell, Centerville, Cheshire, Clay and Raccoon.

How to access it

Browse linked pages at the directory index; cite the original directory and transcription. Society office posts Wednesday and Friday 10–1, or appointment at 740-446-4242.

Evidence limit: Personnel directory, not a pupil enrollment list.

Clay Chapel circuit baptisms, marriages and membership

Book I transcriptions include baptisms 1856–1875, marriages 1857–1875, membership 1856–1857 and 1865. Circuit records may include Clay Chapel, Clay Town House, Sardis, Chambersburg, Mount Carmel, Bethel, Swan Creek and Ohio Chapel.

How to access it

Use individual transcription links, then request original record context from the society if needed.

Evidence limit: A circuit book covers multiple congregations; do not assume every entry belongs to Clay Chapel itself.

Infirmary index leading to original admission entries

Surname index gives page references to a transcribed infirmary book; entries may describe admission, family circumstances and later transfers.

How to access it

Society offers free entry checking; posted original two-page copy charge is $1 plus stamped addressed envelope. Confirm current terms before payment; call 740-446-4242.

Evidence limit: 1884–1973 is the institution operation span, not a verified complete record span. Do not add that range to automatic date matching.

Newspaper titles, gaps and a second digital viewer

Gallipolis Daily Tribune: 1895–June 2022; Gallia Times: 1946–January 1966; Times-Sentinel: February 1966–June 2019.

How to access it

Try both bossardlibrary.advantage-preservation.com and bossardlibrary.historyarchives.online. Ask reference staff for limited specific lookups or clearer microfilm images. Posted obituary fee $3.

Evidence limit: Missing issues are explicitly acknowledged. A title span is not a promise of every issue.

Local school annuals and Ohio River context

Local-history resources include school yearbooks, military rosters and Ohio River history alongside newspapers.

How to access it

Request a particular school, graduating year or river subject from reference staff before traveling; give a narrow question.

Evidence limit: No complete school-year inventory is provided on the public genealogy page, so no yearbook date match is asserted.

Welsh family history in the Madog Center

The library includes Welsh and Welsh-American history, with a family history and genealogy room.

How to access it

Appointments strongly recommended; posted weekday hours 8:30–4, weekends by appointment. Email welsh@rio.edu or call 740-245-7186. Davis House stands at Lake Drive and SR 325/West College Street.

Evidence limit: This is a collection inquiry route; no complete family-file inventory or historical date range is published. Do not confuse it with the Welsh-American Heritage Museum in Jackson County.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Understand the collection. Choose your next step.

Selected collection

School personnel directory

What it can tell you
A personnel directory can help identify a school employee and assigned community. It is not a pupil list.

Selected listed years: 1938–1939

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Transcribed 1938–1939 personnel directory, not student enrollment or a multi-year employment history.

How to search
Browse the township links in the 1938–1939 directory index and compare names and roles across pages.

How to retrieve it
Cite the directory year, page and Marjorie Wood transcription. Ask the Gallia society about the original if an ambiguous name matters.

Practical access
Browse the publicly linked transcription pages. Ask the society separately about original images or additional school records.

If nothing turns up
Absence from a personnel directory does not establish that someone never taught or attended school there.

Selected collection

Clay Chapel Charge baptisms

What it can tell you
Baptism entries may supply dates and relationships, but baptism and birth are different events. Read exactly what the entry states.

Selected listed years: 1856–1875

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Book I baptism transcription, 1856–1875. The charge can include several named congregations; do not assign every baptism to Clay Chapel itself.

How to search
Open the Book I baptism transcription from the Clay Chapel page. Search variants and preserve any congregation or minister information.

How to retrieve it
Cite Book I, entry or page if supplied, and the Mary James transcription. Ask the society about the original record when wording is uncertain.

Practical access
Use individual transcription links, then request original record context from the society if needed.

If nothing turns up
The charge served multiple congregations. A missing name does not establish religious affiliation or absence from the area.
