PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / LOCAL HISTORY

Guernsey Library Finley Room

Start with staff assistance and a mix of paper, film and digital material.

What you can find

The local-history department preserves paper, microfilm and digital archives alongside county-related objects. Dedicated search terminals and microfilm/microfiche readers support onsite research.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

800 Steubenville Avenue, Cambridge; 740-432-5946. The library accepts online and postal genealogy inquiries. Confirm current Finley Room hours before traveling.

A question you can ask

Which collections cover [surname, locality and years], and can you check an index before my visit?

Keep in mind

The public overview does not give a series-by-series inventory. Ask about exact coverage, copying and fragile material.

STOP 02 / SOCIETY / EARLY COUNTY RECORDS

Guernsey County Genealogical Society

Ask about early docket books as well as family compilations.

What you can find

The local visitors bureau identifies early docket books, wills and probate material, tax records, vital records, family histories and cemetery-reading books at the society.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

125 North Seventh Street, Cambridge; 740-432-9249. Published hours are Wednesday and Thursday 10–5; confirm volunteer availability and research arrangements first.

A question you can ask

Do the early docket books or tax records cover [person and year], and are they original volumes or copies?

Keep in mind

Record formats and date completeness are not specified. Lineage-society and family books contain submitted research that needs checking against cited originals.

STOP 03 / MUSEUM / COAL AND SCHOOL LIFE

Guernsey County History Museum

Give a mining or schoolhouse ancestor a documented local setting.

What you can find

The museum contains local furnishings, products and personal objects, with a one-room schoolhouse display and a replica of an 1890s coal mine.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

218 North Eighth Street, Cambridge; 740-439-5884. The official tourism listing gives seasonal hours and appointment options. Confirm the current schedule and any document consultation separately.

A question you can ask

Which items or photographs connect with [mine, school or community], and what provenance is available?

Keep in mind

The mine is a replica, not an original mine archive. A public inventory of employee lists or family files was not verified.

STOP 04 / INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM / GLASSWORKERS

National Museum of Cambridge Glass

Understand the products and processes behind a glassworker's occupation.

What you can find

The museum displays more than 10,000 Cambridge Glass pieces and interprets working in the glass house. Its website also offers a company documentary and historic radio-advertising material.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

136 South Ninth Street, Cambridge; 740-432-4245. Check the museum's seasonal and holiday schedules and ask in advance about research beyond the exhibits.

A question you can ask

What documented material illustrates [job, production period or glass line], and are worker photographs available?

Keep in mind

The exhibit collection does not establish that payrolls or personnel files survive. Ask specifically rather than assuming a named employee can be found.

STOP 05 / LAND / OWNERSHIP

Guernsey County Recorder

Follow recorded transfers to identify neighbors and family connections.

What you can find

The recorder maintains real-estate records and provides a Records Search link from the county's current government site.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start at the official Recorder's Office page; call 740-432-9275 for older-index assistance. Published office hours are weekdays 8–4.

A question you can ask

Which grantor/grantee indexes cover [surname, township and years], and how can I obtain the cited deed?

Keep in mind

Online historical start dates are not stated on the overview. The county has moved to a .gov website; older deep links may redirect to its home page.

STOP 06 / COURT / CIVIL AND DOMESTIC RECORDS

Guernsey County Clerk of Courts

Find the court docket, then ask where the older papers are held.

What you can find

The Legal Division maintains Common Pleas civil, criminal and domestic-relations records and provides online docket access. Historical files may require a separate custody inquiry.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

801 Wheeling Avenue, Cambridge; 740-432-9230. Weekday hours exclude noon–1. Use the official Public Records Requests route with names, dates and case references.

A question you can ask

Where are [year] case files, journals and appearance dockets held, and may I request [case]?

Keep in mind

A formerly indexed county PDF about historical record locations now redirects to the county homepage. Confirm custody directly rather than relying on that obsolete link.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

GUERNSEY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Guernsey County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Listed years: 1810–1921.

Source, access and coverage limits

Use the linked State Archives catalog entry to identify the series and request research access or a copy from Ohio History Connection. Confirm the volume and year before visiting; a catalog entry does not promise online images.

Keep in mind: Selected catalog holdings; inclusive endpoints do not establish that every year or entry survives.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
