PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / SOCIETY PUBLICATIONS / FAMILY HISTORY

Edwin Wood Memorial Library inherited genealogy collection

Follow the records after a society closes.

What you can find

The former Henry County Genealogical Society reports its books, pamphlets and microfilms are available at the Deshler library, with publications moving to electronic distribution.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 419-278-3616 to request a particular former-society title and confirm access. Use 208 North East Avenue, Deshler.

A question you can ask

Is this former society publication available as a PDF or onsite volume?

Keep in mind

The society has disbanded. Confirm current pricing, formats and holdings with the library.

STOP 02 / CIVIL CASES / DIVORCES

Henry County Families Common Pleas index

Use names on both sides of a case.

What you can find

The database searches plaintiffs, defendants, remarks and case types, with a year selector for 1864–1906.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search surname variants and save volume/page references before contacting the Clerk of Courts about the original packet.

A question you can ask

Can the clerk locate the packet behind this indexed case?

Keep in mind

This is an index, not a complete case file; coverage is incomplete. Confirm retrieval arrangements with the court.

STOP 03 / HOUSEHOLDS / ROADS

Henry County Families 1948–1950 directory

Locate a rural household between censuses.

What you can find

The directory database supports surname and road searches. The society describes household relationships, occupations and addresses; Napoleon city is excluded.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the surname alphabet or search a road to identify neighbors.

A question you can ask

Which households appear on the same road?

Keep in mind

Directory statements are not vital records; verify identities and relationships independently.

STOP 04 / FARM COMMUNITY / PHOTOGRAPHS

Henry County Families OSU Extension photographs

Look for the community activities surrounding a farming family.

What you can find

The site describes an OSU Extension photograph collection for 1927–1994 with searchable captions.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the homepage’s OSU Extension Photos link; ask the holding library about access if the older database fails.

A question you can ask

Is this person identified in an Extension activity photograph?

Keep in mind

The database route could not be retrieved during review. Caption identifications can need correction and are not proof of kinship.

STOP 05 / PHOTOGRAPHS / LOCAL DOCUMENTS

Henry County Historical Collections in Ohio Memory

Search several communities through a shared digital collection.

What you can find

The collaborative collection brings together historical photographs and documents from organizations in Napoleon, Hamler, Liberty Center and Malinta.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse Ohio Memory and preserve each item’s contributor, identifier and description.

A question you can ask

Is there a dated image of this school, street or business?

Keep in mind

This is a selected digital collection, not a complete catalog of every participating institution.

STOP 06 / SCHOOLHOUSE / HOUSEHOLD HISTORY

Henry County Historical Society museums

Use preserved places to understand local family life.

What you can find

The society interprets the Bloomfield home and fairgrounds complex, including a log home and former Lutheran schoolhouse.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact the volunteer society to confirm current tours and a specific artifact inquiry.

A question you can ask

Does an exhibit or identified object illuminate this local occupation or school?

Keep in mind

The society’s contact page says it does not provide general genealogy research services. Older event listings should not be treated as current hours.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Bowling Green State University Center for Archival Collections

School-age enumeration on a named reel

What you can find

Napoleon-Union School District enumeration of unmarried youth, 1885–1886, is listed on reel 1.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Request the named series and reel from BGSU’s Center for Archival Collections before traveling. These holdings are outside Henry County and are not represented by a local map marker.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

Enumeration is not proof of school attendance. Check geography and volume contents.

STOP 08 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Henry County Probate Division

Probate records require an office inquiry

What you can find

Court lists births/deaths 1867–1908, estates and marriages from 1847, and naturalization from 1853.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact probate@henrycountyohio.gov or 419-592-7771 before visiting Suite 203, 660 N. Perry Street, Napoleon. The court explicitly says its office records are not online.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

Open-ended starting dates are not converted into a complete planner range. Confirm series, indexes and access for the specific year.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

HENRY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Henry County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Henry County Home registers and journals at BGSU

Bowling Green State University’s county-record inventory lists County Home registers, 1870–1979, on reel 53, and County Home journals, 1913–1987, on reels 26 and 80.

How to begin: Use the inventory to identify the register or journal years, then contact the Center for Archival Collections about consulting the listed microfilm and requesting copies. Give the county, series, date range and reel number.

What remains uncertain: This is a microfilm inventory, not a searchable online admission index. Confirm restrictions and availability, particularly for twentieth-century records, before visiting.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Understand the collection. Choose your next step.

Two selected collections, with practical ways to search and interpret the result. These are research suggestions, not findings about a particular person.

  1. Choose a source
  2. Check its limits
  3. Search and record
  4. Follow the next lead
Cataloged collection span

Napoleon-Union enumeration

What it can tell you
A district enumeration offers a school-age population lead. It is not necessarily evidence that a child attended a particular school.

Selected listed years: 1885–1886

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Cataloged enumeration, 1885–1886, reel 1. District-specific and not a continuous school attendance series.

How to search
Read the list headings and date, then compare names and ages with household evidence. Retain the district name in your citation.

How to retrieve it
Request Napoleon-Union School District Treasurer, Enumeration of Unmarried Youth, 1885–1886, reel 1 at BGSU CAC.

Practical access
Request the named series and reel from BGSU’s Center for Archival Collections before traveling. These holdings are outside Henry County and are not represented by a local map marker.

If nothing turns up
This short district-specific holding cannot exclude a child from the county or from other school districts.

Damascus Township record book

What it can tell you
A township record book may provide local administrative context. Determine the kinds of entries before expecting names or relationships.

Selected listed years: 1839–1859

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
One cataloged township series, 1839–1859, reel 1. Contents and continuity require inspection.

How to search
Begin with headings and any index. Note the office, dates and geographic references for each useful entry.

How to retrieve it
Request Damascus Township Book of Records, 1839–1859, reel 1 from BGSU CAC; ask about the book’s contents and copying options.

Practical access
Request the named series and reel from BGSU’s Center for Archival Collections before traveling. These holdings are outside Henry County and are not represented by a local map marker.

If nothing turns up
The catalog title does not promise a resident list or any particular record type. An absent name is a limited negative finding.
