Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LOCAL HISTORIES / CENSUS / CEMETERY INDEXES

Logan-Hocking County District Library genealogy room

Start with the local reference shelf.

What you can find

The library lists local history information, genealogies, census records and cemetery indexes in its public genealogy room. Its database page also lists HeritageQuest, Fold3 and African American Heritage.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Visit during regular library hours at 230 East Main Street, Logan, or call 740-385-2348. Ancestry Library Edition is explicitly available in the library only.

A question you can ask

Which local history or cemetery index covers [person and township], and what original source does the entry cite?

Keep in mind

Exact collection dates are not listed. Confirm coverage and remote database eligibility. This is the library in Logan, Hocking County, not Logan County Libraries in Bellefontaine.

STOP 02 / FAMILY FILES / MINING / RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHS

Hocking County Historical and Genealogical Society and Museum

Pair family research with the work and communities around it.

What you can find

The research library lists family books; church, school and group files; marriage and cemetery records; and military information. Exhibits include coal-mining equipment and a Hocking Valley Railroad telegraph office with train-wreck photographs.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact hockinghistorymuseum@gmail.com or 740-385-6026 at 64 North Culver Street, Logan. The site announces closure October 31, 2026 through April 3, 2027; call 740-380-0452 about visits outside normal hours.

A question you can ask

Which family file or photograph relates to [surname, school, mine or railroad location], and what provenance accompanies it?

Keep in mind

Published collections do not imply complete coverage or digitization. Confirm research-library access separately from a museum tour. The OGS chapter directory points to this museum rather than establishing a separate repository.

STOP 03 / EARLY VITAL RECORDS / CUSTODIAN REFERRAL

Hocking County Records Repository

Go to the current repository address.

What you can find

The county health department directs researchers seeking records before 1909 to the Records Repository.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 740-380-2457 before visiting 105 West Hunter Street, Logan, in the former United Methodist Church building. Supply the record type, name and approximate year.

A question you can ask

Which surviving volume covers [birth or death and year], and can I obtain the full entry with its citation?

Keep in mind

Older directories give a different address. The official health department relocation notice identifies West Hunter Street. Detailed marriage, estate and guardianship date ranges were not verified; ask about them rather than treating an older directory as a current inventory.

STOP 04 / DEEDS / HISTORICAL INDEXES / VOLUME DATES

Hocking County Recorder and deed-volume guide

A date can guide you to the right deed book.

What you can find

The Recorder states records can be searched from 1818 and electronic indexes began January 1, 1992. Its deed-volume guide lists the first recording date for deed and official-record volumes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 740-385-2031 at 1 East Main Street, first floor, Logan. Copy requests go to copyrequest@hocking.oh.gov; charges apply. The research room closes at 3:45 p.m. and copy requests should arrive by 3:30 p.m.

A question you can ask

Which older grantor or grantee index and volume should I consult for [names and approximate date], and can you copy the complete instrument?

Keep in mind

Electronic index coverage and the survival of older records are different questions. A missing online result does not establish that no deed exists. Confirm current hours and copy fees. The previously linked deed-volume PDF was unavailable during the October 24 link check; request the current volume guide from the Recorder.

STOP 05 / BIRTH / DEATH / CERTIFIED COPIES

Hocking County Health Department vital statistics

Use the published 1909 dividing point to choose a first contact.

What you can find

The department lists birth and death records from 1909 to the present, staff-assisted searches and certified copies at a published $25 fee. It refers earlier records to the Records Repository.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 740-385-3030 ext. 257 or efile.hchd@gmail.com at 350 State Route 664N, Logan. Use the official application links and supply the identifying facts.

A question you can ask

Does your office hold [event, person, place and year], and what is required to request a copy?

Keep in mind

Confirm jurisdiction, current fees and availability before ordering. The published date range does not prove an individual event was registered.

STOP 06 / COMPANY TOWN / INDUSTRIAL CONTEXT

Historic Haydenville

Follow the employer as well as the surname.

What you can find

Ohio History Connection’s marker describes iron, coal, sandstone and clay industries, canal and railroad shipping, and company-built houses using local brick and tile. It identifies company ownership continuing until 1964.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Read the official marker account and use Haydenville as a place and employer search term when consulting census, land and museum material. The marker is at the entrance to Haydenville Park.

A question you can ask

Which records or documented photographs connect [person] with Haydenville and its industrial community?

Keep in mind

The marker establishes historical context, not the survival of payroll or personnel files. No current museum hours or research-archive access were verified. A company-town address alone does not prove employment.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Ohio University Libraries, Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections

Murray City streets and Logan industry in photographs

What you can find

Frank Buhla Collection MSS113 includes a Hogan and Murphy Saloon exterior in Murray City, cataloged circa early 1900s. Tom Root collection MSS160 includes an aerial view of Logan Clay Products and downtown Logan dated January 3, 1965.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin with digital item records; ask the manuscript archivist about originals, identification and reproduction. Confirm physical retrieval location before travel.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

The approximate Buhla date is not an exact year range. These are selected images, not a complete community survey.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

HOCKING COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Hocking County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Assessors' returns of births [microform], 1856-1857

What it can tell you
This previously cataloged birth-return series is a possible early vital-record lead. Inspect the return itself before relying on any name or date.

Selected listed years: 1856–1857

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Previously recorded catalog span 1856–1857. Catalog recheck failed November 4, 2026; confirm the series and access directly before relying on the dates. Coverage and completeness have not been newly verified.

How to search
Once access is confirmed, browse the township and reporting period. Distinguish the date of the birth from the date the assessor reported it.

How to retrieve it
Give Ohio History Connection the Hocking County title, 1856–1857 and catalog URL https://aspace.ohiohistory.org/repositories/2/resources/9204. Ask whether the reel can currently be consulted or copied.

Practical access
Catalog currently unavailable during our check. Ask Ohio History Connection about present research/copy access; do not assume an onsite visit or online images are available.

If nothing turns up
A missing return, incomplete reporting or an unavailable reel cannot establish that an event did not occur. Record the access limitation separately from a completed search.
