PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / FIRELANDS HISTORY / PHOTOGRAPHS

Laning-Young Research Center

Follow a family through the wider Firelands region.

What you can find

Firelands Historical Society’s research collection includes local-history and genealogy books and local photograph and postcard collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 419-663-0392 for an appointment. Website announces seasonal closure November–April; ask about off-season arrangements. Posted research rates are $15/hour in-library and $25/hour outside.

A question you can ask

Which local collection documents this township or family?

Keep in mind

Seasonal museum opening is not a guarantee of research service. Confirm access directly.

STOP 02 / ANCESTOR FILE / LINEAGE APPLICATIONS

Firelands Genealogical Society files

Check a locally assembled family file for sources worth following.

What you can find

The chapter’s Ancestor File, lineage-society records and compiled research resources are housed at the Laning-Young Research Library.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact Laning-Young Research Center before visiting. The museum website reports seasonal closure November–April; ask about an appointment and availability of the society files.

A question you can ask

Is there an Ancestor File with citations for this family?

Keep in mind

A lineage application is a researcher’s submission, not independent proof of every relationship. Library access is seasonal; verify arrangements.

STOP 03 / NEWSPAPERS / DEATH NOTICES

Norwalk Public Library obituary copies

Turn an obituary-index result into a readable source.

What you can find

The library participates in the Hayes Ohio Obituary Index and supplies copies from its Norwalk newspaper holdings.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the index’s repository field and request the notice from the holding library; contact Norwalk about current copy terms and turnaround.

A question you can ask

Can you provide this notice with newspaper date and page?

Keep in mind

Norwalk holds Norwalk papers, not every newspaper represented in the statewide index. Confirm the correct repository before ordering.

STOP 04 / YEARBOOKS / DIRECTORIES / RAILROADS

Bellevue Public Library local history

Follow a family across Bellevue’s county boundaries.

What you can find

Listed resources include Bellevue Comet yearbooks for 1919–2013, selected Firelands Pioneer volumes, city and rural directories, local maps and Nickel Plate railroad books.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask about the particular year or town before visiting the local-history collection.

A question you can ask

Which directory or school yearbook covers this household?

Keep in mind

Selected runs may have gaps. Railroad books supply context but do not establish that an employee file survives.

STOP 05 / WILLARD / COMMUNITY IMAGES

Huron County Community Library historical photographs

Look for a street or local scene that explains a family photograph.

What you can find

A library preservation project documented the William and Rachel Daniels collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century local photographs, negatives and slides.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask the library for the current historical-picture archive or onsite access, using the collection name and place of interest.

A question you can ask

Is there an identified image of this Celeryville or Willard location?

Keep in mind

The project report documents the collection, but its older online route may have changed. Confirm current access and reuse permission.

STOP 06 / TARGETED LOCAL RESEARCH

Firelands Genealogical Society research committee

Use local expertise when an index does not resolve the question.

What you can find

The society offers research assistance from members experienced with Huron and Erie County records. Its website also points to county records and cemetery inscriptions.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Review the research-assistance guidelines and send a bounded question with dates and sources already checked; confirm terms before commissioning work.

A question you can ask

Which surviving local source could distinguish these two people?

Keep in mind

Volunteer researchers are not presented as certified genealogists. The society warns that some website information is outdated; verify custody and access.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

HURON COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Huron County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Huron County Ohio History & Genealogy

Township manuscripts and Bateham glass negatives

Early township and institutional records, local manuscripts and Evander Bateham glass negatives supplement printed histories.

How to access it

Call 419-663-0392 for an appointment. Website announces seasonal closure November–April; ask about off-season arrangements. Posted research rates are $15/hour in-library and $25/hour outside.

Evidence limit: No item-level dates verified; broad historical descriptions should not generate year matches.

Ancestor File and lineage applications

Chapter Ancestor File and lineage-society records are housed at the shared research library.

How to access it

Request the family name and relevant file through the library or chapter; arrange access before travel.

Evidence limit: The chapter has no separate library. Applications contain compiled claims that require source checking.

Bellevue yearbooks and regional directories

Bellevue Comet yearbooks span 1919–2013; the room also holds regional directories and selected Firelands Pioneer issues.

How to access it

Genealogy Room is on the second floor, 224 E. Main Street. Ask staff which materials circulate and which remain onsite.

Evidence limit: A stated yearbook span does not promise every edition or every student; Pioneer publication dates are not collection-event dates.

Willard and Celeryville historical images

Preservation report documents the Daniels gift of local photographs, negatives and slides, including a subject-search example for Celeryville.

How to access it

Contact the Willard library at 419-933-8564 and ask for the historical picture collection and current search access.

Evidence limit: The 2013 report does not verify that its old picture-archive URL still works. No exact item-date span verified.

Turn an obituary index citation into a copy

Norwalk newspaper obituaries can be requested using the full Hayes index citation.

How to access it

Partner instructions specify $2.50 per obituary by mail to Genealogy Department, 46 West Main Street; confirm current fee before payment.

Evidence limit: Norwalk holds Norwalk newspapers, not every title appearing in the statewide index. No absence claim from an index-only search.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Understand the collection. Choose your next step.

Two selected collections, with practical ways to search and interpret the result. These are research suggestions, not findings about a particular person.

  1. Choose a source
  2. Check its limits
  3. Search and record
  4. Follow the next lead
Cataloged collection span

Bellevue Comet yearbooks

What it can tell you
A yearbook can associate a person with a school, class or activity; a caption still needs independent identity confirmation.

Selected listed years: 1919–2013

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Library lists Comet editions across 1919–2013; individual availability and completeness require checking.

How to search
Check the exact school and edition, then browse class and activity pages. Do not assume every student has a portrait.

How to retrieve it
Ask Bellevue Public Library’s second-floor Genealogy Room for the relevant Comet yearbook; confirm whether it is onsite-only or circulates.

Practical access
Genealogy Room is on the second floor, 224 E. Main Street. Ask staff which materials circulate and which remain onsite.

If nothing turns up
A listed span does not promise every edition or student. Try adjacent years and graduation reporting.

Microfilm

Will records

What it can tell you
A recorded will may name beneficiaries and witnesses, but the full estate file may contain additional relationships or dates.

Selected listed years: 1903–1911

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
CAC lists will records 1903–1911 on reels 50–51. This is a selected microfilm series, not all probate cases.

How to search
Use any volume index, then read the entire will and probate notation. Distinguish signing and recording dates.

How to retrieve it
Request Huron Probate Court Will Records, 1903–1911, reels 50–51 from BGSU CAC, with volume/page if known.

Practical access
Use the linked inventory to identify the office, series and reel number. Contact CAC or book a research appointment before visiting. These are microfilm holdings, not a promise of online images. Ask about copies and any access restrictions.

If nothing turns up
No will found is not proof of no estate. Ask about administration dockets or files outside this selected microfilm span.
