PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / TRI-STATE GENEALOGY

Briggs Library Phyllis Hamner Room

Start with a collection that reaches beyond modern county boundaries.

What you can find

Published holdings include marriage and will microfilm, 1817–1999; naturalizations, 1817–1850; early deeds; Civil War discharge papers; family files; and Ironton directories from 1882 with gaps. The room also has birth and death indexes and cemetery listings.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ironton Branch, second floor, 321 South Fourth Street. Contact genealogy@briggslibrary.org or 740-532-1124 before a research visit; Hamner Room hours can change.

A question you can ask

Which naturalization, directory or family-file material covers [person] in [years]?

Keep in mind

Some holdings are indexes, not full records. Directories and yearbooks have gaps. The catalog explicitly excludes divorces from its assorted court records.

STOP 02 / LAND / EARLY INDEXES

Lawrence County Recorder historical indexes

Use old deed indexes to connect families with places and neighbors.

What you can find

The office lists deed grantor/grantee indexes for 1818–1984, mortgages for 1834–1988, plats for 1818–2010, leases for 1864–1981 and veterans' grave plats. Older books and current indexes are separate search routes.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start at the recorder's official website. For search assistance contact 740-533-4314, courthouse, 111 South Fourth Street, Suite 21, Ironton.

A question you can ask

Which index and book image should I use for [surname, township, date range]?

Keep in mind

An index entry must be followed to its document. The current deed index begins in 1982; searching only that interface can miss earlier material. Confirm access rules for military records.

STOP 03 / MILITARY / LOCAL VETERANS

William C. Lambert Military Museum and Archive

Put a veteran's service in the context of Lawrence County.

What you can find

The museum presents local veterans' history and maintains an online Soldiers' Stories section. Its current exhibit location is inside the Ironton City Building.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

301 South Third Street, Ironton. The museum lists free public exhibits on weekdays, 8–4:30. Use its contact page to ask about archival material before arriving.

A question you can ask

Do you hold a photograph, interview or service-related item for [veteran and unit]?

Keep in mind

Exhibit access is not a promise that uncataloged archives are available without arrangement. The public pages do not establish a comprehensive veteran-name index.

STOP 04 / LOCAL MUSEUM / COMMUNITY CONTEXT

Lawrence County History Museum

Ask about the objects and images that explain a family's working life.

What you can find

The City of Ironton identifies the county history museum at 506 South Sixth Street. Use it as a local referral and exhibit stop while confirming specific collection holdings directly.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 740-532-1222 before visiting. The city directory lists weekend afternoon hours, but the listing dates to 2020 and should not be treated as a current appointment confirmation.

A question you can ask

Do you have accessible photographs or exhibits about [community, furnace or occupation], and can a researcher consult them?

Keep in mind

A detailed current collection inventory was not verified. Do not confuse this Ohio museum with Lawrence County organizations in Pennsylvania or Indiana.

STOP 05 / COURT / ESTATES AND FAMILIES

Lawrence County Probate Court

Move from a library index to the surviving case file.

What you can find

The court identifies estates, trusts, guardianships, marriage licenses, name changes and birth corrections among its responsibilities. The health department directs pre-1908 local birth and death requests here.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the court's official Probate Court page; the health department supplies 740-533-4343 for older vital-record inquiries. Ask about indexes, historical custody and copy arrangements before visiting.

A question you can ask

Does [person's] estate or guardianship file survive for [year], and can I request the full packet?

Keep in mind

The public overview does not establish complete historical coverage or online images. Restricted proceedings are not automatically open for genealogy research.

STOP 06 / VITAL RECORDS / CERTIFIED COPIES

Lawrence County Health Department vital records

Use the event location to choose the correct certificate office.

What you can find

The ordering service covers Ohio births from 1908 onward and deaths occurring in Lawrence County from 1908 onward. Earlier local events are referred to Probate Court.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the department's official ordering service or contact 740-532-3962, lawcohd@lawcohd.org, 2122 South Eighth Street, Ironton. Review current certificate and online-processing fees before ordering.

A question you can ask

Can this office supply the certificate for [name, event date and location]?

Keep in mind

A Lawrence residence does not establish that a death occurred in the county. The order page contains an apparent stray Belmont County reference; confirm jurisdiction directly if uncertain.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

LAWRENCE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Lawrence County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

Early naturalization and military papers

Naturalizations 1817–1850 are on microfilm. Civil War discharge papers and veteran lists provide separate military leads.

How to access it

Ask genealogy staff for volume and page references.

Evidence limit: No discharge-paper dates or completeness statement; court holdings exclude divorces.

Birth corrections and lineage documentation

Birth Registrations and Corrections volumes 1–16 complement birth indexes 1868–2000. First Family and Civil War Family books were compiled by the county genealogical society; limited yearbooks offer school leads.

How to access it

Request the correction volume or supporting lineage material.

Evidence limit: Correction-volume dates are unstated; lineage claims require corroboration.

Ironton house histories and obituary cards

Historical house listings complement gapped city directories beginning 1882. Obituary cards index 1850–1900; separate printed obituaries cover 2003–2005.

How to access it

Search names and street addresses with staff.

Evidence limit: Directory end date is open; no complete run implied.

Lease, building-loan and mechanics-lien indexes

Online historical indexes include leases 1864–1981, building-loan mortgages 1892–1934 and mechanics liens 1926–1958 and 1968–1980. Follow property and contractor clues into the referenced instrument.

How to access it

Use historical Index Search, then Index Books; contact staff for navigation or copies.

Evidence limit: Indexes are finding aids. The mechanics-lien gap 1959–1967 must remain visible; no missing-year holdings are inferred.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Cataloged collection span

Naturalization microfilm

What it can tell you
Naturalization records can supply identity and court-process clues. Different stages may be recorded separately.

Selected listed years: 1817–1850

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Library-listed naturalization microfilm, 1817–1850. Individual courts, volumes and gaps require confirmation.

How to search
Identify the court, volume and document type. Search surname variants and inspect any index references before reading the full entry.

How to retrieve it
Ask Briggs Library genealogy staff for the naturalization microfilm listed for 1817–1850 and the appropriate volume or reel.

Practical access
Contact Briggs Library genealogy staff to confirm the relevant film, research location and copying arrangements.

If nothing turns up
A person might naturalize elsewhere, at a later date or through another legal route. No hit is not proof of noncitizenship.

Index / listed span

Obituary card index

What it can tell you
An obituary index points to a published item. It is not itself the complete obituary or a county death register.

Selected listed years: 1850–1900

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Library lists obituary cards for 1850–1900. The span does not establish every notice or death was indexed.

How to search
Search name variants and ask staff about filing conventions. Preserve the newspaper citation supplied by the card.

How to retrieve it
Request the indexed card and the cited newspaper page, including issue date and page number, from Briggs Library.

Practical access
Ask genealogy staff for card-index assistance and the original notice; confirm copying options.

If nothing turns up
Unindexed notices, spelling differences and deaths without notices can all produce no hit. Record which index you checked.
