PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / NEWSPAPERS / GENEALOGY

Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County

Search the Vindicator with its digitization gaps in mind.

What you can find

The library offers genealogy databases and a digital archive of regional documents, photographs and books. Its guide describes Vindicator coverage 1869–2009 through MyHeritage.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the library’s genealogy page and confirm card or onsite requirements for the selected database.

A question you can ask

Can staff suggest another format for an issue missing from the digital search?

Keep in mind

The library warns that Vindicator issues are missing or poorly digitized. No search hit is not proof that no notice ran.

STOP 02 / FAMILY PAPERS / GOVERNMENT / LEDGERS

Mahoning Valley Historical Society Archives Research Center

Find a local collection outside the standard record databases.

What you can find

Holdings include diaries, manuscripts, maps, ledgers and government records. Online samples include Bible entries, Smoky Hollow material and wartime collections.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call 330-743-2589 to schedule viewing and identify the collection and research question.

A question you can ask

Is there an original family or business collection relevant to this name?

Keep in mind

Only a small sample is online. Compiled or family-supplied information still requires evaluation.

STOP 03 / TELEVISION / NEWS FILM / BUSINESS

Stewart Media Archives Center

Look for a family event captured by local broadcasting.

What you can find

The MVHS collection includes WKBN news film 1955–2000, photographs, audio and business records associated with local broadcasting.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Research and viewing are by appointment; contact MVHS at 330-743-2589, extension 105.

A question you can ask

Does the news-film index cover this event and approximate broadcast date?

Keep in mind

This is a separate MVHS research route. Existence of footage and permission to reproduce it must be confirmed.

STOP 04 / INDUSTRY / IMMIGRATION / COMMUNITY

Youngstown State University oral histories

Hear how people described work and community life.

What you can find

The oral-history collection includes narratives about steel, pottery, railroads, labor relations, ethnic communities, military service and religion.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search transcripts and the university archive catalog; contact archives@ysu.edu for assistance or access to unavailable material.

A question you can ask

Is there an interview connected to this mill, neighborhood or cultural community?

Keep in mind

Interviews record a narrator’s perspective. Verify names, dates and relationships against independent records.

STOP 05 / STEEL / LABOR / ACCESS CHECK

Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor

Explore steelmaking context while confirming research availability first.

What you can find

The Steel Museum interprets regional industry and labor, and provides a dedicated archives-and-collections inquiry contact.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Email archives.yhcil@ysu.edu before planning archival research. Ask what can currently be consulted remotely or onsite.

A question you can ask

Are records for this employer or labor organization accessible, and in what format?

Keep in mind

An indexed official notice reports the archives and library closed from October 1, 2025; current gallery hours do not confirm archive reopening. Verify directly.

STOP 06 / RADIO / REGIONAL HISTORY

PLYMC Digital Archive: Tales of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys

Compare mid-century public storytelling with the records behind it.

What you can find

The collection presents broadcasts created in the 1950s by Youngstown’s Industrial Information Institute.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Browse the library’s digital collection and retain the broadcast title and item identifier.

A question you can ask

Does this broadcast discuss the business or community in my research?

Keep in mind

A produced historical broadcast is an interpretation, not a primary record of every event it describes. Corroborate its claims.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

MAHONING COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Mahoning County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

microfilm

Marriage records

Listed years: 1846–1865.

Source, access and coverage limits

Ask the Ohio Genealogical Society library in Bellville to confirm the reel and current access before visiting, or inquire about its look-up/copy service.

Keep in mind: Selected microfilm holdings in an older inventory, updated 2012. These endpoints do not prove complete registration, every surviving volume, or online image access.

microfilm

Agricultural schedules

Listed years: 1850, 1860.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Kent State: Catholic Diocese of Youngstown records

Kent State Special Collections holds records of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown. The collection offers a possible institutional research route when a parish or diocesan connection is known.

How to begin: All records are restricted. Obtain written permission from the diocesan Chancery Office first, then contact Kent State at least three weeks before a visit because the material is stored offsite. Bring the written permission.

What remains uncertain: The collection listing is not a promise that a particular parish register, person or date range is present or available. Confirm the exact material and permission before making travel plans.

COMMUNITY MEMORY

Community history groups and research leads

Local communities can help identify a place, photograph or possible source. These independently run groups are community leads, not catalogued archives or BWP partners. Keep the contributor, date, basis for an identification and original source together. Ask permission before republishing photographs or private contributions.

Facebook identities and visible access information checked October 25, 2026. Verification here concerns the group, not the accuracy of its members’ posts. No groups were joined and no messages were sent.

BEFORE YOU SEARCH

Understand the collection. Choose your next step.

Two selected collections, with practical ways to search and interpret the result. These are research suggestions, not findings about a particular person.

  1. Choose a source
  2. Check its limits
  3. Search and record
  4. Follow the next lead
Cataloged collection span

Beloit Special District

What it can tell you
School records may connect a person with a local institution. The series description alone does not establish a pupil roster or specific contents.

Selected listed years: 1898–1919

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
MVHS lists school records for 1898–1919 with a finding aid. Individual contents and gaps require inspection.

How to search
Request the finding aid first, select the relevant series and year, then inspect the actual headings before searching for a person.

How to retrieve it
Ask Mahoning Valley Historical Society for Beloit Special District school records, 1898–1919, and its finding aid. Arrange an appointment.

Practical access
MVHS requests an appointment to view collections. Call 330-743-2589 to discuss the finding aid and retrieval.

If nothing turns up
District-specific holdings cannot rule out schooling elsewhere. Record the exact series and years searched.

Cataloged collection span

Goshen Township District 6

What it can tell you
A district-level school collection offers a focused local lead. Do not assume it includes every pupil or household.

Selected listed years: 1856–1867

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
MVHS lists District 6 records for 1856–1867 with a finding aid. Not a countywide school collection.

How to search
Use the finding aid to identify the record type and dates. Search the specific school district and compare names with independently dated evidence.

How to retrieve it
Request Goshen Township District 6 school records, 1856–1867, from MVHS, including the finding aid and access instructions.

Practical access
Arrange an MVHS research appointment and confirm the volume or folder needed before travel.

If nothing turns up
A broad date span does not guarantee uninterrupted records. Confirm the family’s district before treating no hit as meaningful.
