PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Other guide stops not shown on this map

These stops may be online collections, shared repositories or locations not yet confirmed for mapping. Follow the collection’s access instructions.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / FAMILY HISTORIES / LOCAL DOCUMENTS

Mercer County District Library Genealogy Room

Check a locally collected family history before assuming it is online.

What you can find

The Celina genealogy room gathers county books, photographs, family histories and documents; its page links a family-history database.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Consult the library’s official genealogy-room page for current access information. Confirm hours and available assistance with the library before visiting; this guide does not promise volunteer research services.

A question you can ask

Is a family-history folder or volume available for this surname?

Keep in mind

Genealogy-room materials do not circulate. Compiled histories need source checking.

STOP 02 / PROBATE / DEEDS / CHANCERY

Mercer County District Library court microfilm

Read the underlying probate or land entry.

What you can find

Listed microfilm includes wills for 1825–1919, chancery records for 1837–1857, indexed probate case files for 1852–1900 and indexed deeds for 1823–1913.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Identify the series and approximate year before requesting help or visiting.

A question you can ask

Does the probate file name heirs or identify property?

Keep in mind

A listed span does not guarantee every document survives; ask about legibility and missing rolls.

STOP 03 / GERMAN NEWSPAPERS / COMMUNITY NEWS

Celina newspaper microfilm: Der Bota and local titles

Search the language and paper your ancestor may have read.

What you can find

The library lists German-language Der Bota for 1883–1920, the Workingman’s Journal for 1869–1871 and several Celina and Rockford newspapers.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Ask staff about the exact issue and reader access. Retain the original German text alongside any translation.

A question you can ask

Is this death or business notice in Der Bota?

Keep in mind

Newspaper runs contain gaps, and translation can introduce errors. Confirm names against the original page.

STOP 04 / MERCER COUNTY CHRONICLE / LOCAL PRESS

Coldwater Public Library digital newspapers

Search community newspapers from home.

What you can find

Coldwater provides online microfilm access, including the Mercer County Chronicle and other local titles through its digital archive.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow the library’s Digital Archives link and browse dates when name searches fail.

A question you can ask

Does a neighborhood column report this family’s move or visit?

Keep in mind

Text recognition may miss names. Verify the issue image and surviving date coverage.

STOP 05 / CELINA / MENDON / SCHOOL LIFE

Mercer County Library yearbook project

Find a school connection in a dated image.

What you can find

The library links digitized Celina and Mendon yearbooks and a Mercer County historic inventory.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the Yearbook Project links from the genealogy page, then select the school and available year.

A question you can ask

Does the yearbook caption identify this person or activity?

Keep in mind

Digitized years may be incomplete. A shared surname or photograph is not evidence of a family relationship.

STOP 06 / 1791 AND 1794 BATTLES / MILITARY LEADS

Fort Recovery Museum research links

Test a battle-participation story against named research sources.

What you can find

The museum links a compiled 1791 enlisted roster, a descendants resource for the 1791 and 1794 battles, and Ball State battlefield research.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Start with the online research links and follow their citations to original military evidence.

A question you can ask

Which underlying record supports this person’s reported participation?

Keep in mind

The museum explicitly says it cannot fulfill genealogical research requests. Descendant compilations are leads, not proof of descent.

STOP 07 / LOCAL COLLECTION / RESEARCH ROUTE

Fort Recovery Public Library

Fort Recovery scattered newspaper archive

What you can find

Digitized local newspapers span 1893-1973 in a scattered collection.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Follow Local Community Archives from the library homepage; call 419-375-2869 for help.

A question you can ask

Which specific item and access arrangement fits this person, place and year?

Keep in mind

The library explicitly calls the collection scattered. Do not interpret a no-hit search as absence from the community.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

MERCER COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Mercer County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Repository holdings

Marriage records

Listed years: 1824–1984.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact Wright State Special Collections and Archives with county, series and date; submit a research request or arrange a reading-room visit. The guide identifies holdings, not online record images.

Keep in mind: Exact county span in repository guide; confirm volumes and format before visiting.

Repository holdings

Marriage consent records

Listed years: 1829–1928.

Source, access and coverage limits

Contact Wright State Special Collections and Archives with county, series and date; submit a research request or arrange a reading-room visit. The guide identifies holdings, not online record images.

Keep in mind: Separate consent series, not all marriages.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Additional collection-level routes checked November 3, 2026. Confirm current access before visiting.

School and parish-school visual collections

The Yearbook Project includes Celina, Mendon, St. Henry, and Immaculate Conception yearbooks plus Immaculate Conception class photographs.

How to access it

Open the Yearbook Project, choose the school and available edition, then inspect captions in the images. Consult the library’s own website for current information about the collection and inquiry procedures.

Evidence limit: Available images do not establish complete enrollment or continuous editions.

Newspaper searches with named missing periods

Daily Standard and Rockford Press microfilm supply neighborhood news; Fort Recovery Record survives in three separated runs.

How to access it

Microfilm is listed at the Celina main library, 303 North Main Street. Use the library’s official website to confirm current hours, reader availability and copying arrangements before visiting. Include the newspaper title and issue date in any inquiry.

Evidence limit: Named gaps are preserved in the planner. Partial-year gaps do not exclude entire years. Fort Recovery Record film is listed only for 1891-1896, 1919-1920 and 1924; confirm individual issues.

Assessors and guardianship alongside probate

Microfilm includes assessors birth/death reports and administration, executor and guardian dockets.

How to access it

Use noncirculating microfilm at the Celina main library. Consult the library’s official website for current inquiry procedures and confirm hours, reader availability and copying arrangements before travel. Identify the series and approximate date you need.

Evidence limit: Assessors reports are listed for 1868 and 1875-1908, not a continuous run beginning in 1868.

Coldwater archive and short-lived local titles

Digitized newspapers include Mercer County Chronicle, Celina Advocate and St. Henry Advocate.

How to access it

Search the linked Digital Archives remotely and browse the issue image to verify a hit. For assistance, call Coldwater Public Library at 419-678-2431; confirm available dates before visiting.

Evidence limit: Dates come from the Mercer library inventory. Check the archive calendar for missing issues.

Fort Recovery scattered newspaper archive

Digitized local newspapers span 1893-1973 in a scattered collection.

How to access it

Follow Local Community Archives from the library homepage; call 419-375-2869 for help.

Evidence limit: The library explicitly calls the collection scattered. Do not interpret a no-hit search as absence from the community.

Assessors reports

What it can tell you
These are assessors’ birth and death reports, a different route from a newspaper notice.

Selected listed years: 1868, 1875–1908

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Assessors reports of births and deaths, listed for 1868 and 1875–1908. Not a continuous run from 1868; confirm individual entries.

How to search
Search the correct listed year and locality; transcribe the entry fields without assuming the reporter witnessed the event.

How to retrieve it
Ask the Celina library for Assessors Report of Birth & Deaths, 1868 or 1875–1908, with reel and page details.

Practical access
Use noncirculating microfilm at the Celina main library. Consult the library’s official website for current inquiry procedures and confirm hours, reader availability and copying arrangements before travel. Identify the series and approximate date you need.

If nothing turns up
The years 1869–1874 are outside this listing; a missing entry does not establish that the event did not occur.

Administration/executor/guardian docket

What it can tell you
A docket can point to estate or guardianship proceedings and their case references.

Selected listed years: 1867–1879

Date overlap is a lead, not a guarantee of complete coverage.

How to search, request and interpret this collection

Coverage and gaps
Combined administration, executor and guardian docket, 1867–1879. Not necessarily the underlying case papers; confirm individual volumes.

How to search
Record the role, case number, dates and cross-references; follow them to the underlying papers where available.

How to retrieve it
Ask the library for the ADM/EX/GU’D docket, 1867–1879, and how to locate associated case files.

Practical access
Use noncirculating microfilm at the Celina main library. Consult the library’s official website for current inquiry procedures and confirm hours, reader availability and copying arrangements before travel. Identify the series and approximate date you need.

If nothing turns up
A docket entry is not the complete file, and a relationship must be supported by what the record actually says.
