PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 23, 2026. Based on public institutional descriptions, not staff confirmation or an onsite visit. Confirm current access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / LIBRARY / LOCAL REFERRAL

Monroe County District Library

Ask locally before assuming an older online holdings list is current.

What you can find

The Woodsfield library is a practical starting point for locating local-history titles and research assistance. Its current website provides a catalog search and contact route; a detailed current genealogy inventory was not verified.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

96 Home Avenue, Woodsfield; 740-472-1954. Give the library a specific surname, township and period, and ask which materials are currently accessible.

A question you can ask

Which local-history or genealogy titles cover [family or community], and where can I consult them?

Keep in mind

Confirm individual holdings directly. This is Monroe County, Ohio; similarly named library systems in other states and the city of Monroe, Ohio, are different institutions.

STOP 02 / OFFSITE ARCHIVE / CHURCH REGISTERS

E&R Library & Archives Monroe church collections

A Monroe County congregation's records may be held in Pennsylvania.

What you can find

Church RG 121, Lewisville Charge, includes original Miltonsburg/Summit Township registers for the 1870s–1900s and earlier transcriptions. Church RG 730, St. Paul's Evangelical in Woodsfield, includes transcribed baptisms, marriages, deaths, membership and a pastoral register.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use E&R Library & Archives’ For Researchers page to request a genealogical lookup, giving the church or specific place, year and record group. Contact info@erlibrary-archives.org before travel. In a November 3, 2026 update, the repository confirmed Lancaster access by appointment only; Eden Seminary hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.–noon, with visits to be confirmed. Records are not assumed online; check current research and copy fees.

A question you can ask

Could you check [record group, event, name and year], and clarify whether the available entry is original or transcribed?

Keep in mind

Collection-wide dates are not dates for every register. These catalog descriptions are finding aids, not necessarily online page images. Confirm fees, appointment requirements and reproduction options.

STOP 03 / MAPS / ROADS AND MINING

Monroe County Tax Map survey archive

Find an ancestor's road under its earlier name.

What you can find

The county provides pre-1975 engineer plat books, recorder plats and old road-survey notes. The survey archive also links Quarto mining surveys, railroad surveys, cemetery plats and Hannibal Locks and Dam project files.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use Plat Books and Road Records. In the GIS viewer, turn on Plats and Surveys and select a point for its linked record. Use book indexes when you lack a volume/page reference.

A question you can ask

Which old road name or survey reference corresponds to [family's land or locality]?

Keep in mind

Historic road names can differ from present names. GIS points are finding aids; confirm the actual survey and deed rather than treating a map overlay as proof of ownership.

STOP 04 / TAX / LAND TRANSFERS

Monroe County Auditor historical records

Track assessed property across gaps in other records.

What you can find

The auditor links real-estate duplicates for 1833–1914 and 1996 onward, personal-property duplicates, and transfer books for 1862–2025. Transfer ledgers reach back to 1968.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open Historical Records and follow the appropriate scanned-book link. Record township, year, page and parcel description before comparing with deeds.

A question you can ask

Is the [year and township] duplicate or transfer entry available, and which unscanned volume should I request?

Keep in mind

Real-estate duplicates for 1915–1995 are not scanned. The office says transfer books before 1862 were lost to fire. An assessment is not itself a deed or proof of residence.

STOP 05 / LAND / ORIGINAL DOCUMENT FOLLOW-UP

Monroe County Recorder

Follow a tax or survey clue into the recorded instrument.

What you can find

The recorder preserves deeds, mortgages, leases and easements and provides an online record-search service. Online images begin January 1, 1980; the index begins with Book 1.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the official site's Online Record Search, or call 740-472-5264. Office: 101 North Main Street, Room 20, Woodsfield; weekdays 8–4. The mailing address is different.

A question you can ask

Which surviving index covers [surname and period], and can you provide the referenced instrument?

Keep in mind

Index coverage and image coverage differ. Request earlier documents by book and page. Confirm current access and any gaps with the office.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

MONROE COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Monroe County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
