PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Bring one focused question.

Start with a name or place, approximate years, and the fact you want to establish. These are selected research starting points. A catalog, index, museum exhibit and original record provide different kinds of evidence.

STOP 01 / VITAL RECORDS / ESTATES / DIVORCES / DEEDS

Montgomery County Records Center & Archives

Ask for the file, not just the index entry.

What you can find

The current inventory lists county and Dayton births and deaths, 1867–1908; marriages, 1803–1959; divorces, 1876–1949; wills and estates, 1803–1983; and deeds, 1805–1933. Index date ranges can be shorter than the underlying records.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact 937-225-6366 with names, record types and dates. Staff retrieves records for the research area at 117 South Main Street, sixth floor of the Reibold Building, Dayton. Records cannot be browsed like library books.

A question you can ask

Can you locate the full [estate, divorce or deed] file for [person and year], including supporting papers and its archival reference?

Keep in mind

County pages give differing deed coverage in a property guide and the current inventory; verify the particular volume before visiting. Later vital and court records go to the offices identified on the archive page.

STOP 02 / MANUSCRIPTS / MAPS / LOCAL IMAGES / GENEALOGY

Dayton Metro Library: The Dayton Room

Connect the family to a street, workplace or neighborhood.

What you can find

The Dayton Room preserves books, photographs, maps, manuscripts, postcards, newspapers and other material about Dayton, Montgomery County and the Miami Valley. Dayton Remembers provides selected historical images online.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The room is on Main Library’s second floor. Posted access is Monday–Thursday, noon–4 p.m., with other availability by appointment. Email history@DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call 937-463-2665 and ask for the Dayton Room. The open-stack genealogy collection remains available during library hours.

A question you can ask

Which manuscript or image collection covers [address, family or organization], and can I see the full item description and citation?

Keep in mind

Dayton Room access and general library hours differ. Digital images represent selected holdings; publication permissions and reproduction options depend on the item.

STOP 03 / LOCAL GOVERNMENT / FAMILY PAPERS / NEWS PHOTOGRAPHS

Wright State University Special Collections & Archives

An offsite newspaper archive may preserve the story behind the clipping.

What you can find

Collections include Miami Valley government records, church and labor-union papers, family histories and the Dayton Daily News Archive. Montgomery County marriage holdings are listed for 1803–1913, with early birth and death material on microfilm.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The July 22, 2026 notice closes the reading room through Fall 2026 for upgrades. Onsite research and appointments are temporarily unavailable; email library-archives@wright.edu or call 937-775-2092 for reference help with limited collection access. Confirm reopening before travel.

A question you can ask

Which collection and box cover [person, event or organization], and can staff access or reproduce the material during the closure?

Keep in mind

Some collections, including the Dayton Daily News Archive, are offsite. Availability depends on the request and construction work. This regional repository is at Wright State’s campus, outside Montgomery County.

STOP 04 / INDUSTRY / PHOTOGRAPHS / ARTIFACTS / EPHEMERA

Dayton History collections and NCR Archive

Research the employer that shaped everyday life.

What you can find

Dayton History’s permanent collection includes archival materials, books, photographs and objects documenting the region. Its research service includes the NCR Archive, with a separate image-credit requirement. The digital archive and Dayton History Books Online offer starting points.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact research@daytonhistory.org or 937-293-2841 ext. 114 with a specific company, subject and date range. Ask where the requested material is held and whether a research appointment or digital copy is available.

A question you can ask

Do photographs, company publications or archival files document [person or department] at [employer] during [years]?

Keep in mind

Museum admission does not establish archival access. An employer collection does not promise a complete personnel file. Confirm reproduction charges and image-use terms before ordering.

STOP 05 / SOLDIERS HOME / VA CAMPUS / INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY

National VA History Center Archives: Dayton collections

Distinguish institutional history from an individual veteran’s file.

What you can find

The Dayton VA Medical Center finding aid describes post-1930 campus, staff, patient-activity and event images, administrative material and local history research files. VA History also provides a circa-1890 National Home souvenir booklet for earlier context.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Research is by appointment at the Dayton VA campus, 4100 West Third Street, Building 12. Contact vahistoryoffice@va.gov or 202-873-4940. The official page lists Tuesday and Thursday appointments; digital material is available by request.

A question you can ask

Which historical collection documents [building, program or event], and which agency should receive a request for an individual veteran’s service or medical record?

Keep in mind

These historical collections are not a promise of publicly accessible personal medical or benefit files. Researchers must complete orientation and provide the identification required by the archive. Verify the location and appointment before arrival.

STOP 06 / COUNTY HOME / BURIAL JOURNALS / DISTRIBUTED RECORDS

Montgomery County OGS infirmary research guide

Follow institutional records across their different custodians.

What you can find

The chapter’s guide brings together infirmary history, cemetery information and transcriptions, including a list of people receiving poor relief for 1826–1840. It describes resident registers at Wright State, administrative material at Dayton Metro Library and burial journals at the county archive.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin with the online guide, then contact the named repository using its current official instructions. For chapter guidance, email info@mcc-ogs.org. Wright State’s Fall 2026 reading-room closure affects onsite access there.

A question you can ask

Which original register supports [person’s entry], and is the surviving record at Wright State, Dayton Metro Library or the county archive?

Keep in mind

The chapter page contains older contact details and inconsistent summary statements about custody. Verify the exact item’s location and restrictions directly. The county infirmary and the National Soldiers Home were separate institutions.

Keep the evidence and the next step.

Save the repository, collection title, dates, box or volume and page, link, and what you searched. Follow an index entry to the full record. Keep uncertain identifications separate from established relationships.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Montgomery County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Additional collection references

Official catalog descriptions checked October 25, 2026. These notes identify research routes, not completed name-level searches.

Wright State: Miami Conservancy District labor-camp records

Collection MS-128 includes a Dam Construction Labor Camps series for 1917–1920, with recruitment and employment material, camp reports, correspondence and brief superintendent diaries. The district’s 1918–1922 periodical also includes camp features and personnel news.

How to begin: Use the finding aid to identify relevant camp and folder references, then ask Wright State Special Collections about consultation or copies. The collection is listed without access restrictions; reproduction and copyright conditions may still apply.

What remains uncertain: The existence of employment material does not establish that every worker is named. Identify the camp and dates, and distinguish periodical reporting from an individual employment record.
